This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of social media analytics for disaster management. The abstract begins by highlighting the increasing prevalence of natural disasters and the need for effective strategies to mitigate their impact. It then emphasizes the growing influence of social media in disaster situations, discussing its role in disaster detection, situational awareness, and emergency communication. The abstract explores the challenges and opportunities associated with leveraging social media data for disaster management purposes.     SUPER: Towards the Use of Social Sensors for Security Assessments and Proactive Management of Emergencies

    Social media statistics during recent disasters (e.g. the 20 million tweets relating to 'Sandy' storm and the sharing of related photos in Instagram at a rate of 10/sec) suggest that the understanding and management of real-world events by civil protection and law enforcement agencies could benefit from the effective blending of social media information into their resilience processes. In this paper, we argue that despite the widespread use of social media in various domains (e.g. marketing/branding/finance), there is still no easy, standardized and effective way to leverage different social media streams -- also referred to as social sensors -- in security/emergency management applications. We also describe the EU FP7 project SUPER (Social sensors for secUrity assessments and Proactive EmeRgencies management), started in 2014, which aims to tackle this technology gap

    A Bayesian-Based Approach for Public Sentiment Modeling

    Public sentiment is a direct public-centric indicator for the success of effective action planning. Despite its importance, systematic modeling of public sentiment remains untapped in previous studies. This research aims to develop a Bayesian-based approach for quantitative public sentiment modeling, which is capable of incorporating uncertainty and guiding the selection of public sentiment measures. This study comprises three steps: (1) quantifying prior sentiment information and new sentiment observations with Dirichlet distribution and multinomial distribution respectively; (2) deriving the posterior distribution of sentiment probabilities through incorporating the Dirichlet distribution and multinomial distribution via Bayesian inference; and (3) measuring public sentiment through aggregating sampled sets of sentiment probabilities with an application-based measure. A case study on Hurricane Harvey is provided to demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of the proposed approach. The developed approach also has the potential to be generalized to model various types of probability-based measures

    #StrongTogether? Qualitative Sentiment Analysis of Social Media Reactions to Disaster Volunteering during a Forest Fire in Finland

    The transformation of disaster volunteering has been highlighted in academic literature. This study examined that transformation via a big data approach. The context for the study was provided by a forest fire in Finland, which sparked a debate on volunteering. The data (806 social media messages) were analyzed using qualitative sentiment analysis to (1) identify the sentiments relating to a variety of volunteers and (2) understand the context of and tensions behind those sentiments. The data suggested that the prevailing view of disaster volunteering is a rather traditional one, while the observations on the transformation remain largely latent. The positive sentiments reflected a view of the co-production of extinguishing forest fires as an activity of formal governmental and nonprofit emergency management organizations and volunteers from expanding and extending organizations. Unaffiliated volunteers were seen as extra pairs of hands that could be invited to help in an organized way and with limited tasks, only if required. Sentiments with a more negative tone raised concerns about having sufficient numbers of affiliated volunteers in the future and the rhetorical level of appreciation of them. The data revealed a dichotomous relationship between “professionals” and “amateurs” and the politicization of the debate between different actor groups.© 2022 by the authors.     Social Media Behaviour Analysis in Disaster-Response Messages of Floods and Heat Waves via Artificial Intelligence

    This paper analyses social media data in multiple disaster-related collections of floods and heat waves in the UK. The proposed method uses machine learning classifiers based on deep bidirectional neural networks trained on benchmark datasets of disaster responses and extreme events. The resulting models are applied to perform a qualitative analysis via topic inference in text data. We further analyse a set of behavioural indicators and match them with climate variables via decoding synoptical records to analyse thermal comfort. We highlight the advantages of aligning behavioural indicators along with climate variables to provide with 7 additional valuable information to be considered especially in different phases of a disaster and applicable to extreme weather periods. The positiveness of messages is around 8% for disaster, 1% for disaster and medical response, 7% for disaster and humanitarian related messages. This shows the reliability of such data for our case studies. We show the transferability of this approach to be applied to any social media data collection

    Community Segmentation and Inclusive Social Media Listening

    Social media analytics provide a generalized picture of situational awareness from the conversations happening among communities present in social media channels that are that are, or risk being affected by crises. The generalized nature of results from these analytics leaves underrepresented communities in the background. When considering social media analytics, concerns, sentiment, and needs are perceived as homogenous. However, offline, the community is diverse, often segmented by age group, occupation, or language, to name a few. Through our analysis of interviews from professionals using social media as a source of information in public service organizations, we argue that practitioners might not be perceiving this segmentation from the social media conversation. In addition, practitioners who are aware of this limitation, agree that there is room for improvement and resort to alternative mechanisms to understand, reach, and provide services to these communities in need. Thus, we analyze current perceptions and activities around segmentation and provide suggestions that could inform the design of social media analytics tools that support inclusive public services for all, including persons with disabilities and from other disadvantaged groups.publishedVersionPaid open acces
