The Approximate Capacity Region of the Gaussian Z-Interference Channel with Conferencing Encoders
A two-user Gaussian Z-Interference Channel (GZIC) is considered, in which
encoders are connected through noiseless links with finite capacities. In this
setting, prior to each transmission block the encoders communicate with each
other over the cooperative links. The capacity region and the sum-capacity of
the channel are characterized within 1.71 bits per user and 2 bits in total,
respectively. It is also established that properly sharing the total limited
cooperation capacity between the cooperative links may enhance the achievable
region, even when compared to the case of unidirectional transmitter
cooperation with infinite cooperation capacity. To obtain the results,
genie-aided upper bounds on the sum-capacity and cut-set bounds on the
individual rates are compared with the achievable rate region. In the
interference-limited regime, the achievable scheme enjoys a simple type of
Han-Kobayashi signaling, together with the zero-forcing, and basic relaying
techniques. In the noise-limited regime, it is shown that treating interference
as noise achieves the capacity region up to a single bit per user.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information

Optimization Framework and Graph-Based Approach for Relay-Assisted Bidirectional OFDMA Cellular Networks
This paper considers a relay-assisted bidirectional cellular network where
the base station (BS) communicates with each mobile station (MS) using OFDMA
for both uplink and downlink. The goal is to improve the overall system
performance by exploring the full potential of the network in various
dimensions including user, subcarrier, relay, and bidirectional traffic. In
this work, we first introduce a novel three-time-slot time-division duplexing
(TDD) transmission protocol. This protocol unifies direct transmission, one-way
relaying and network-coded two-way relaying between the BS and each MS. Using
the proposed three-time-slot TDD protocol, we then propose an optimization
framework for resource allocation to achieve the following gains: cooperative
diversity (via relay selection), network coding gain (via bidirectional
transmission mode selection), and multiuser diversity (via subcarrier
assignment). We formulate the problem as a combinatorial optimization problem,
which is NP-complete. To make it more tractable, we adopt a graph-based
approach. We first establish the equivalence between the original problem and a
maximum weighted clique problem in graph theory. A metaheuristic algorithm
based on any colony optimization (ACO) is then employed to find the solution in
polynomial time. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed protocol
together with the ACO algorithm significantly enhances the system total
throughput.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, 2 table
Distributed Space Time Coding for Wireless Two-way Relaying
We consider the wireless two-way relay channel, in which two-way data
transfer takes place between the end nodes with the help of a relay. For the
Denoise-And-Forward (DNF) protocol, it was shown by Koike-Akino et. al. that
adaptively changing the network coding map used at the relay greatly reduces
the impact of Multiple Access interference at the relay. The harmful effect of
the deep channel fade conditions can be effectively mitigated by proper choice
of these network coding maps at the relay. Alternatively, in this paper we
propose a Distributed Space Time Coding (DSTC) scheme, which effectively
removes most of the deep fade channel conditions at the transmitting nodes
itself without any CSIT and without any need to adaptively change the network
coding map used at the relay. It is shown that the deep fades occur when the
channel fade coefficient vector falls in a finite number of vector subspaces of
, which are referred to as the singular fade subspaces. DSTC
design criterion referred to as the \textit{singularity minimization criterion}
under which the number of such vector subspaces are minimized is obtained.
Also, a criterion to maximize the coding gain of the DSTC is obtained. Explicit
low decoding complexity DSTC designs which satisfy the singularity minimization
criterion and maximize the coding gain for QAM and PSK signal sets are
provided. Simulation results show that at high Signal to Noise Ratio, the DSTC
scheme provides large gains when compared to the conventional Exclusive OR
network code and performs slightly better than the adaptive network coding
scheme proposed by Koike-Akino et. al.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, A mistake in the proof of Proposition 3 given in

Space-Time Coded Spatial Modulated Physical Layer Network Coding for Two-Way Relaying
Using the spatial modulation approach, where only one transmit antenna is
active at a time, we propose two transmission schemes for two-way relay channel
using physical layer network coding with space time coding using Coordinate
Interleaved Orthogonal Designs (CIOD's). It is shown that using two
uncorrelated transmit antennas at the nodes, but using only one RF transmit
chain and space-time coding across these antennas can give a better performance
without using any extra resources and without increasing the hardware
implementation cost and complexity. In the first transmission scheme, two
antennas are used only at the relay, Adaptive Network Coding (ANC) is employed
at the relay and the relay transmits a CIOD Space Time Block Code (STBC). This
gives a better performance compared to an existing ANC scheme for two-way relay
channel which uses one antenna each at all the three nodes. It is shown that
for this scheme at high SNR the average end-to-end symbol error probability
(SEP) is upper bounded by twice the SEP of a point-to-point fading channel. In
the second transmission scheme, two transmit antennas are used at all the three
nodes, CIOD STBC's are transmitted in multiple access and broadcast phases.
This scheme provides a diversity order of two for the average end-to-end SEP
with an increased decoding complexity of for an arbitrary
signal set and for square QAM signal set.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure
Decoupled Uplink and Downlink in a Wireless System with Buffer-Aided Relaying
The paper treats a multiuser relay scenario where multiple user equipments
(UEs) have a two-way communication with a common Base Station (BS) in the
presence of a buffer-equipped Relay Station (RS). Each of the uplink (UL) and
downlink (DL) transmission can take place over a direct or over a relayed path.
Traditionally, the UL and the DL path of a given two-way link are coupled, that
is, either both are direct links or both are relayed links. By removing the
restriction for coupling, one opens the design space for a decoupled two-way
links. Following this, we devise two protocols: orthogonal decoupled UL/DL
buffer-aided (ODBA) relaying protocol and non-orthogonal decoupled UL/DL
buffer-aided (NODBA) relaying protocol. In NODBA, the receiver can use
successive interference cancellation (SIC) to extract the desired signal from a
collision between UL and DL signals. For both protocols, we characterize the
transmission decision policies in terms of maximization of the average two-way
sum rate of the system. The numerical results show that decoupling association
and non-orthogonal radio access lead to significant throughput gains for
two-way traffic.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on

Relay Selection with Network Coding in Two-Way Relay Channels
In this paper, we consider the design of joint network coding (NC)and relay
selection (RS) in two-way relay channels. In the proposed schemes, two users
first sequentially broadcast their respective information to all the relays. We
propose two RS schemes, a single relay selection with NC and a dual relay
selection with NC. For both schemes, the selected relay(s) perform NC on the
received signals sent from the two users and forward them to both users. The
proposed schemes are analyzed and the exact bit error rate (BER) expressions
are derived and verified through Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the
dual relay selection with NC outperforms other considered relay selection
schemes in two-way relay channels. The results also reveal that the proposed NC
relay selection schemes provide a selection gain compared to a NC scheme with
no relay selection, and a network coding gain relative to a conventional relay
selection scheme with no NC.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
