Codes of Commitment to Crime and Resistance: Determining Social and Cultural Factors over the Behaviors of Italian Mafia Women
This article categorizes thirty-three women in four main Italian Mafia groups and explores social and cultural behaviors of these women. This study introduces the feminist theory of belief and action. The theoretical inquiry investigates the sometimes conflicting behaviors of women when they are subject to systematic oppression. I argue that there is a cultural polarization among the categorized sub-groups. Conservative radicals give their support to the Mafia while defectors and rebels resist the Mafia. After testing the theory, I assert that emancipation of women depends on the strength of their beliefs to perform actions against the Mafiosi culture
p-Adic Statistical Field Theory and Deep Belief Networks
In this work we initiate the study of the correspondence between p-adic
statistical field theories (SFTs) and neural networks (NNs). In general quantum
field theories over a p-adic spacetime can be formulated in a rigorous way.
Nowadays these theories are considered just mathematical toy models for
understanding the problems of the true theories. In this work we show these
theories are deeply connected with the deep belief networks (DBNs). Hinton et
al. constructed DBNs by stacking several restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs).
The purpose of this construction is to obtain a network with a hierarchical
structure (a deep learning architecture). An RBM corresponds to a certain spin
glass, we argue that a DBN should correspond to an ultrametric spin glass. A
model of such a system can be easily constructed by using p-adic numbers. In
our approach, a p-adic SFT corresponds to a p-adic continuous DBN, and a
discretization of this theory corresponds to a p-adic discrete DBN. We show
that these last machines are universal approximators. In the p-adic framework,
the correspondence between SFTs and NNs is not fully developed. We point out

The Directed Dominating Set Problem: Generalized Leaf Removal and Belief Propagation
A minimum dominating set for a digraph (directed graph) is a smallest set of
vertices such that each vertex either belongs to this set or has at least one
parent vertex in this set. We solve this hard combinatorial optimization
problem approximately by a local algorithm of generalized leaf removal and by a
message-passing algorithm of belief propagation. These algorithms can construct
near-optimal dominating sets or even exact minimum dominating sets for random
digraphs and also for real-world digraph instances. We further develop a core
percolation theory and a replica-symmetric spin glass theory for this problem.
Our algorithmic and theoretical results may facilitate applications of

New labour and new surveillance: Theoretical and political ramifications of CCTV implementation in the UK
This paper examines the implications of New Labour's approaches to crime and disorder on CCTV implementation. It concentrates on the usage of CCTV as one of the government's many initiatives, which are intended to address crime and disorder, including the fear of crime. In particular, the impact of the 1998 Crime and Disorder Act (CDA) - the cornerstone of this government's approach to crime reduction - on the generation of such strategies is examined. The paper revisits neo-Marxist and Foucauldian analyses of the so-called surveillance society through an appraisal of the complex relationship between structure and agency in the formulation and implementation of anti-crime and disorder strategies. Drawing on fieldwork data the paper considers the activities of practitioners at a local level by focusing on the influence of central government, local communities and 'common sense' thinking based on certain criminological theories. It is argued that a myriad of micro-level operations, obligations, processes, managerial concerns (particularly conflict resolution and resource issues), structures and agency - as well as the indirect influence of central government - shape CCTV policy. Ultimately, the creation of new local policy contexts under the CDA emphasise the need to consider incremental and malleable processes concerning the formulation of CCTV policy. In turn, this allows a re-examination of theoretical accounts of surveillance, and their attendant assumptions of sovereign or disciplinary power
