CSGNet: Neural Shape Parser for Constructive Solid Geometry
We present a neural architecture that takes as input a 2D or 3D shape and
outputs a program that generates the shape. The instructions in our program are
based on constructive solid geometry principles, i.e., a set of boolean
operations on shape primitives defined recursively. Bottom-up techniques for
this shape parsing task rely on primitive detection and are inherently slow
since the search space over possible primitive combinations is large. In
contrast, our model uses a recurrent neural network that parses the input shape
in a top-down manner, which is significantly faster and yields a compact and
easy-to-interpret sequence of modeling instructions. Our model is also more
effective as a shape detector compared to existing state-of-the-art detection
techniques. We finally demonstrate that our network can be trained on novel
datasets without ground-truth program annotations through policy gradient

Deep Learning of Atomically Resolved Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Images: Chemical Identification and Tracking Local Transformations
Recent advances in scanning transmission electron and scanning probe
microscopies have opened exciting opportunities in probing the materials
structural parameters and various functional properties in real space with
angstrom-level precision. This progress has been accompanied by an exponential
increase in the size and quality of datasets produced by microscopic and
spectroscopic experimental techniques. These developments necessitate adequate
methods for extracting relevant physical and chemical information from the
large datasets, for which a priori information on the structures of various
atomic configurations and lattice defects is limited or absent. Here we
demonstrate an application of deep neural networks to extract information from
atomically resolved images including location of the atomic species and type of
defects. We develop a 'weakly-supervised' approach that uses information on the
coordinates of all atomic species in the image, extracted via a deep neural
network, to identify a rich variety of defects that are not part of an initial
training set. We further apply our approach to interpret complex atomic and
defect transformation, including switching between different coordination of
silicon dopants in graphene as a function of time, formation of peculiar
silicon dimer with mixed 3-fold and 4-fold coordination, and the motion of
molecular 'rotor'. This deep learning based approach resembles logic of a human
operator, but can be scaled leading to significant shift in the way of
extracting and analyzing information from raw experimental data
RotationNet: Joint Object Categorization and Pose Estimation Using Multiviews from Unsupervised Viewpoints
We propose a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based model "RotationNet,"
which takes multi-view images of an object as input and jointly estimates its
pose and object category. Unlike previous approaches that use known viewpoint
labels for training, our method treats the viewpoint labels as latent
variables, which are learned in an unsupervised manner during the training
using an unaligned object dataset. RotationNet is designed to use only a
partial set of multi-view images for inference, and this property makes it
useful in practical scenarios where only partial views are available. Moreover,
our pose alignment strategy enables one to obtain view-specific feature
representations shared across classes, which is important to maintain high
accuracy in both object categorization and pose estimation. Effectiveness of
RotationNet is demonstrated by its superior performance to the state-of-the-art
methods of 3D object classification on 10- and 40-class ModelNet datasets. We
also show that RotationNet, even trained without known poses, achieves the
state-of-the-art performance on an object pose estimation dataset. The code is

SEGCloud: Semantic Segmentation of 3D Point Clouds
3D semantic scene labeling is fundamental to agents operating in the real
world. In particular, labeling raw 3D point sets from sensors provides
fine-grained semantics. Recent works leverage the capabilities of Neural
Networks (NNs), but are limited to coarse voxel predictions and do not
explicitly enforce global consistency. We present SEGCloud, an end-to-end
framework to obtain 3D point-level segmentation that combines the advantages of
NNs, trilinear interpolation(TI) and fully connected Conditional Random Fields
(FC-CRF). Coarse voxel predictions from a 3D Fully Convolutional NN are
transferred back to the raw 3D points via trilinear interpolation. Then the
FC-CRF enforces global consistency and provides fine-grained semantics on the
points. We implement the latter as a differentiable Recurrent NN to allow joint
optimization. We evaluate the framework on two indoor and two outdoor 3D
datasets (NYU V2, S3DIS, KITTI, Semantic3D.net), and show performance

SGPN: Similarity Group Proposal Network for 3D Point Cloud Instance Segmentation
We introduce Similarity Group Proposal Network (SGPN), a simple and intuitive
deep learning framework for 3D object instance segmentation on point clouds.
SGPN uses a single network to predict point grouping proposals and a
corresponding semantic class for each proposal, from which we can directly
extract instance segmentation results. Important to the effectiveness of SGPN
is its novel representation of 3D instance segmentation results in the form of
a similarity matrix that indicates the similarity between each pair of points
in embedded feature space, thus producing an accurate grouping proposal for
each point. To the best of our knowledge, SGPN is the first framework to learn
3D instance-aware semantic segmentation on point clouds. Experimental results
on various 3D scenes show the effectiveness of our method on 3D instance
segmentation, and we also evaluate the capability of SGPN to improve 3D object
detection and semantic segmentation results. We also demonstrate its
flexibility by seamlessly incorporating 2D CNN features into the framework to
boost performance
