    Inter-Satellite Communication System based on Visible Light

    Future space missions will be driven by factors such as the need for reduced cost of spacecraft without diminished performance, new services and capabilities including reconfigurability, autonomous operations, target observation with improved resolution and servicing (or proximity) operations. Small satellites, deployed as a sensor network in space, can through inter-satellite communication (ISC) enable the realization of these future goals. Developing the communication subsystem that can facilitate ISC within this distributed network of small satellites require a complex range of design trade-offs. For small satellites, the general design parameters that are to be optimized for ISC are size, mass, and power, as well as cost (SMaP-C). Novel and efficient design techniques for implementing the communication subsystem are crucial for building multiple small satellite networks with capability for achieving significant data-rates along the inter-satellite links (ISLs). In this paper, we propose an alternative approach to RF and laser ISLs for ISC among small satellites deployed as a sensor network in low Earth orbit (LEO). For short to medium range ISLs, we present an LED-based visible light communication (VLC) system that addresses the SMaP constraints, including capability for achieving significant data rates. Our research is focused on the development of the physical layer for pico-/nano class of satellites with prime consideration for the impact of solar background illumination on link performance. We develop an analytical model of the inter-satellite link (ISL) in MATLAB and evaluate its feasibility and performance for different intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) schemes.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, accepted in IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic System

    Cross-layer network lifetime optimization considering transmit and signal processing power in WSNs

    Maintaining high energy efficiency is essential for increasing the lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), where the battery of the sensor nodes cannot be routinely replaced. Nevertheless, the energy budget of the WSN strictly relies on the communication parameters, where the choice of both the transmit power as well as of the modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) plays a significant role in maximizing the network lifetime (NL). In this paper, we optimize the NL of WNSs by analysing the impact of the physical layer parameters as well as of the signal processing power (SPP) P_sp on the NL. We characterize the underlying trade-offs between the NL and bit error ratio (BER) performance for a predetermined set of target signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) values and for different MCSs using periodic transmit-time slot (TS) scheduling in interference-limited WSNs. For a per-link target BER requirement (PLBR) of 10^?3, our results demonstrate that a ’continuous-time’ NL in the range of 0.58?4.99 years is achieved depending on the MCSs, channel configurations, and SPP

    Hydrogen Research for Spaceport and Space-Based Applications: Hydrogen Sensors and Systems

    The activities presented are a broad based approach to advancing key hydrogen related technologies in areas such as fuel cells, hydrogen production, and distributed sensors for hydrogen-leak detection, laser instrumentation for hydrogen-leak detection, and cryogenic transport and storage. Presented are the results from research projects, education and outreach activities, system and trade studies. The work will aid in advancing the state-of-the-art for several critical technologies related to the implementation of a hydrogen infrastructure. Activities conducted are relevant to a number of propulsion and power systems for terrestrial, aeronautics and aerospace applications. Sensor systems research was focused on hydrogen leak detection and smart sensors with adaptive feedback control for fuel cells. The goal was to integrate multifunction smart sensors, low-power high-efficiency wireless circuits, energy harvesting devices, and power management circuits in one module. Activities were focused on testing and demonstrating sensors in a realistic environment while also bringing them closer to production and commercial viability for eventual use in the actual operating environment

    A Low-power CMOS 2-PPM Demodulator for Energy Detection IR-UWB Receivers

    This paper presents an integrated 2-PPM CMOS demodulator for non-coherent energy detection receivers which inherently provides analog-to-digital conversion. The device, called Bi-phase integrator, employs an open loop Gm - C integrator loaded with a switched capacitor network. The circuit has been simulated in a mixed-mode UMC 0.18mum technology and its performance figures are obtained through a mixed-signal simulation environment developed with the aid of ADVanceMS (ADMS, mentor graphics). Bit-error-rate simulations show that the circuit performance is about the same of an ideal energy detection receiver employing infinite quantization resolution. In addition, the simulations show that the circuit provides a complete offset rejection. Thanks to its low power consumption (1 mW during demodulation), its application is appealing for portable devices which aim at very low-power consumption

    The scientific problematic of this PhD is centered on the usage of Visible LightCommunications (VLC) in automotive applications. By enabling wireless communication amongvehicles and also with the traffic infrastructure, the safety and efficiency of the transportation canbe substantially increased. Considering the numerous advantages of the VLC technologyencouraged the study of its appropriateness for the envisioned automotive applications, as analternative and/or a complement for the traditional radio frequency based communications.In order to conduct this research, a low-cost VLC system for automotive application wasdeveloped. The proposed system aims to ensure a highly robust communication between a LEDbasedVLC emitter and an on-vehicle VLC receiver. For the study of vehicle to vehicle (V2V)communication, the emitter was developed based on a vehicle backlight whereas for the study ofinfrastructure to vehicle (I2V) communication, the emitter was developed based on a traffic light.Considering the VLC receiver, a central problem in this area is the design of a suitable sensorable to enhance the conditioning of the signal and to avoid disturbances due to the environmentalconditions, issues that are addressed in the thesis. The performances of a cooperative drivingsystem integrating the two components were evaluated as well.The experimental validation of the VLC system was performed in various conditions andscenarios. The results confirmed the performances of the proposed system and demonstrated thatVLC can be a viable technology for the considered applications. Furthermore, the results areencouraging towards the continuations of the work in this domain.La problématique scientifique de cette thèse est centrée sur le développement decommunications par lumière visible (Visible Light Communications - VLC) dans lesapplications automobiles. En permettant la communication sans fil entre les véhicules, ou entreles véhicules et l’infrastructure routière, la sécurité et l'efficacité du transport peuvent êtreconsidérablement améliorées. Compte tenu des nombreux avantages de la technologie VLC,cette solution se présente comme une excellente alternative ou un complément pour lescommunications actuelles plutôt basées sur les technologies radio-fréquences traditionnelles.Pour réaliser ces travaux de recherche, un système VLC à faible coût pour applicationautomobile a été développé. Le système proposé vise à assurer une communication très robusteentre un émetteur VLC à base de LED et un récepteur VLC monté sur un véhicule. Pour l'étudedes communications véhicule à véhicule (V2V), l'émetteur a été développé sur la base d’un pharearrière rouge de voiture, tandis que pour l'étude des communications de l'infrastructure auvéhicule (I2V), l'émetteur a été développé sur la base d'un feu de circulation. Considérant lerécepteur VLC, le problème principal réside autour d’un capteur approprié, en mesured'améliorer le conditionnement du signal et de limiter les perturbations dues des conditionsenvironnementales. Ces différents points sont abordés dans la thèse, d’un point de vue simulationmais également réalisation du prototype.La validation expérimentale du système VLC a été réalisée dans différentes conditions etscénarii. Les résultats démontrent que la VLC peut être une technologie viable pour lesapplications envisagées

    Millimeter-Scale and Energy-Efficient RF Wireless System

    This dissertation focuses on energy-efficient RF wireless system with millimeter-scale dimension, expanding the potential use cases of millimeter-scale computing devices. It is challenging to develop RF wireless system in such constrained space. First, millimeter-sized antennae are electrically-small, resulting in low antenna efficiency. Second, their energy source is very limited due to the small battery and/or energy harvester. Third, it is required to eliminate most or all off-chip devices to further reduce system dimension. In this dissertation, these challenges are explored and analyzed, and new methods are proposed to solve them. Three prototype RF systems were implemented for demonstration and verification. The first prototype is a 10 cubic-mm inductive-coupled radio system that can be implanted through a syringe, aimed at healthcare applications with constrained space. The second prototype is a 3x3x3 mm far-field 915MHz radio system with 20-meter NLOS range in indoor environment. The third prototype is a low-power BLE transmitter using 3.5x3.5 mm planar loop antenna, enabling millimeter-scale sensors to connect with ubiquitous IoT BLE-compliant devices. The work presented in this dissertation improves use cases of millimeter-scale computers by presenting new methods for improving energy efficiency of wireless radio system with extremely small dimensions.
