Composite structural materials
Overall emphasis is on basic long-term research in the following categories: constituent materials, composite materials, generic structural elements, processing science technology; and maintaining long-term structural integrity. Research in basic composition, characteristics, and processing science of composite materials and their constituents is balanced against the mechanics, conceptual design, fabrication, and testing of generic structural elements typical of aerospace vehicles so as to encourage the discovery of unusual solutions to present and future problems. Detailed descriptions of the progress achieved in the various component parts of this comprehensive program are presented
Composite structural materials
A decade long program to develop critical advanced composite technology in the areas of physical properties, structural concept and analysis, manufacturing, reliability, and life predictions is reviewed. Specific goals are discussed. The status of the chemical vapor deposition effects on carbon fiber properties; inelastic deformation of metal matrix laminates; fatigue damage in fibrous MMC laminates; delamination fracture toughness in thermoplastic matrix composites; and numerical analysis of composite micromechanical behavior are presented

Morphological and Tribological Properties of PMMA/Halloysite Nanocomposites
From an environmental and cost-effective perspective, a number of research challenges can be found for electronics, household, but especially in the automotive polymer parts industry. Reducing synthesis steps, parts coating and painting, or other solvent-assisted processes, have been identified as major constrains for the existing technologies. Therefore, simple polymer processing routes (mixing, extrusion, injection moulding) were used for obtaining PMMA/HNT nanocomposites. By these techniques, an automotive-grade polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) was modified with halloysite nanotubes (HNT) and an eco-friendly additive N,N′-ethylenebis(stearamide) (EBS) to improve nanomechanical properties involved in scratch resistance, mechanical properties (balance between tensile strength and impact resistance) without diminishing other properties. The relationship between morphological/structural (XRD, TEM, FTIR) and tribological (friction) properties of PMMA nanocomposites were investigated. A synergistic effect was found between HNT and EBS in the PMMA matrix. The synergy was attained by the phase distribution resulted from the selective interaction between partners and favourable processing conditions. Modification of HNT with EBS improved the dispersion of nanoparticles in the polymer matrix by increasing their interfacial compatibility through hydrogen bonding established by amide groups with aluminol groups. The increased interfacial adhesion further improved the nanocomposite scratch resistance. The PMMA/HNT-EBS nanocomposite had a lower coefficient of friction and lower scratch penetration depth than PMMA/HNT nanocomposite.Financial support by the EU Commission through Project H2020-686165-IZADINANO2INDUSTRY

Scaling effects in angle-ply laminates
The effect of specimen size upon the response and strength of +/- 45 degree angle-ply laminates was investigated for two graphite fiber reinforced plastic systems and several stacking sequences. The first material system was a brittle epoxy based system, AS4 fibers in 3502 epoxy, and the second was a tough thermoplastic based system, AS4 fibers in PEEK matrix. For the epoxy based system, two generic +/- 45 degree lay-ups were studied: (+45 degrees sub n/-45 degrees sub n) sub 2S (blocked plies), and (+45 degrees/-45 degrees) sub 2nS, for n=1 and 2. The in-plane dimensions of the specimens were varied such that the width/length relationship was 12.7 x n/127 x n mm, for m=1, 2, 3, or 4. It is shown that the stress/strain response and the ultimate strength of these angle-ply laminates depends on the laminate thickness and the type of generic lay-up used. Furthermore, it is shown that first ply failure occurs in the surface plies as a result of normal rather than shear stresses. The implications of the experimental findings upon the validity of the +/- 45 degree tensile test which is used to determine the in-plane shear response of unidirectional composites are discussed
A novel rate-dependent cohesive-zone model combining damage and visco-elasticity

Changes may have been made to this work since it was submitted for publication.The published paper is available from the link below.This paper presents a novel rate-dependent cohesive-zone model combining damage and visco-elasticity and based on two fundamental assumptions. Firstly we postulate the existence of an intrinsic (i.e. rate-independent) fracture energy. Secondly, within a thermodynamically consistent damage-mechanics framework we assume that the evolution of the damage variable is related to the current free energy and to the intrinsic fracture energy. The underlying idea is that the energy of the bonds at the micro-level is rate-independent and that the rate-dependence of the overall dissipated energy during crack propagation is a natural by-product of the visco-elastic dissipation lumped on the zero-thickness interface. Quite good agreement within an expected range of loading rates was obtained between numerical and experimental results for a DCB specimen with steel arms bonded through a rubber interface. This is despite the fact that for this application the model has been kept as simple as possible using a quadratic elastic energy and linear visco-elasticity with one relaxation time only. Therefore, the presented results support the fundamental principles behind the proposed approach and indicate that the model has the potential to be refined into a highly accurate tool of analysis based on sound physical arguments.EPSR

On crystallisation and fracture toughness of poly(phenylene sulphide) under tape placement conditions
Fibre reinforced thermoplastic tapes are subjected to high heating and cooling rates during the tape placement process. Such high cooling rates can significantly inhibit the crystallisation of the thermoplastic polymer and thereby affect its mechanical properties, such as strength or toughness. In the present work, the crystallisation of poly(phenylene sulphide) (PPS) subjected to high cooling rates was investigated using a fast scanning calorimeter. The PPS was found to be unable to crystallise when subjected to cooling rates higher than 20°C s−1. The influence of the degree of crystallinity on fracture toughness was investigated using an essential work of fracture approach.
