Dynamic background modeling and subtraction using spatio-temporal local binary patterns

Traditional background modeling and subtraction methods have a strong assumption that the scenes are of static struc-tures with limited perturbation. These methods will perform poorly in dynamic scenes. In this paper, we present a solution to this problem. We first extend the local binary patterns from spatial domain to spatio-temporal domain, and present a new online dynamic texture extraction operator, named spatio-temporal local binary patterns (STLBP). Then we present a novel and effective method for dynamic background model-ing and subtraction using STLBP. In the proposed method, each pixel is modeled as a group of STLBP dynamic tex-ture histograms which combine spatial texture and tempo-ral motion information together. Compared with traditional methods, experimental results show that the proposed method adapts quickly to the changes of the dynamic background. It achieves accurate detection of moving objects and suppresses most of the false detections for dynamic changes of nature scenes. A region based approach to background modeling in a wavelet multi-resolution framework

In the field of detection and monitoring of dynamic objects in quasi-static scenes, background subtraction techniques where background is modeled at pixel-level, although showing very significant limitations, are extensively used. In this work we propose a novel approach to background modeling that operates at region-level in a wavelet based multi-resolution framework. Based on a segmentation of the background, characterization is made for each region independently as a mixture of K Gaussian modes, considering the model of the approximation and detail coefficients at the different wavelet decomposition levels. Background region characterization is updated along time, and the detection of elements of interest is carried out computing the distance between background region models and those of each incoming image in the sequence. The inclusion of the context in the modeling scheme through each region characterization makes the model robust, being able to support not only gradual illumination and long-term changes, but also sudden illumination changes and the presence of strong shadows in the scen

Background subtraction is the technique of segmenting moving foreground objects from stationary or dynamic background scenes. Background subtraction is a critical step in many computer vision applications including video surveillance, tracking, gesture recognition etc. This thesis addresses the challenges associated with the background subtraction systems due to the sudden illumination changes happening in an indoor environment. Most of the existing techniques adapt to gradual illumination changes, but fail to cope with the sudden illumination changes. Here, we introduce a Global change reactive background subtraction to model these changes as a regression function of spatial image coordinates. The regression model is learned from highly probable background regions and the background model is compensated for the illumination changes by the model parameters estimated. Experiments were performed in the indoor environment to show the effectiveness of our approach in modeling the sudden illumination changes by a higher order regression polynomial. The results of non-linear SVM regression were also presented to show the robustness of our regression model
