The band structure of BeTe - a combined experimental and theoretical study

Using angle-resolved synchrotron-radiation photoemission spectroscopy we have determined the dispersion of the valence bands of BeTe(100) along $\Gamma X$, i.e. the [100] direction. The measurements are analyzed with the aid of a first-principles calculation of the BeTe bulk band structure as well as of the photoemission peaks as given by the momentum conserving bulk transitions. Taking the calculated unoccupied bands as final states of the photoemission process, we obtain an excellent agreement between experimental and calculated spectra and a clear interpretation of almost all measured bands. In contrast, the free electron approximation for the final states fails to describe the BeTe bulk band structure along $\Gamma X$ properly.Comment: 21 pages plus 4 figure

Assim sendo, este trabalho está estruturado em duas partes. A primeira parte é dedicada ao estudo dos diminutivos a partir de referenciais teóricos da Linguística que apresentam uma reflexão sobre a formação dos diminutivos do ponto de vista da morfologia, da fonologia e da semântica. Por sua vez, a segunda parte é dedicada à análise do uso dos diminutivos na tradução da história em quadrinhos “Tintim na América”, tomando-se como referência a versão em francês “Tintin en Amérique” e as abordagens linguísticas apresentadas na primeira parte.Dans ce travail, l’objectif est d’analyser l’emploi des diminutifs dans la traduction de la bande dessinée « Les aventures de Tintin : Tintin en Amérique » en portugais. Par conséquent, ce travail est structuré en deux parties. La première est consacrée à l'étude des diminutifs à partir de références théoriques de la Linguistique qui présentent une réflexion sur la formation des diminutifs du point de vue de la morphologie, de la phonologie et de la sémantique. Ekologisk slaktkyckling på hemmaproducerat foder och bete efter nöt

Trots att konventionell kycklinguppfödning idag på många håll inte är överensstämmande med idéerna bakom ekologisk djurhållning (t.ex. benproblem och cikulationsrubbningar, preventiv medicinering, ingredienser till foderrationen och året-runt uppfödning inomhus), finns det fortfarande knappast någon ekologisk kycklinguppfödning i Sverige. Projektet syftar till att bidra till att utveckla ett ekologisk system för svensk kycklinguppfödning. Områden som behandlas är: - Komposition av ett hemmaproducerat foder, inkl. experiment med konservering av proteinkällor som mjölk eller ägg som kycklingfoder. - Test av långsamväxande raser. - Kycklingarnas effekt på betet. - Betets potentiella bidrag till kycklingarnas näringsförsörjning. Fältstudier görs under sommaren, då kycklingarna hålls i flyttbara burar på betet, som beskrivits av den nordamerikanske bonden Salatin. Den teoretiska bakgrunden är ett blandat odlingssytem med djur där samspelet mellan delarna ses som en potential för att höja efektiviteten i utnyttjandet av lokala resurser. Arbetet kommer att rapporteras i en doktorsavhandling

Band offsets and stability of BeTe/ZnSe (100) heterojunctions

We present ab-initio studies of band offsets, formation energy, and stability of (100) heterojunctions between (Zn,Be)(Se,Te) zincblende compounds, and in particular of the lattice-matched BeTe/ZnSe interface. Equal band offsets are found at Be/Se and Zn/Te abrupt interfaces, as well as at mixed interfaces, in agreement with the established understanding of band offsets at isovalent heterojunctions. Thermodynamical arguments suggest that islands of non-nominal composition may form at the interface, causing offset variations over about 0.8 eV depending on growth conditions. Our findings reconcile recent experiments on BeTe/ZnSe with the accepted theoretical description.Comment: RevTeX 5 pages, 3 embedded figure

Organic broilers in floorless pens on pasture

This thesis investigates different aspects of rearing broilers organically in floorless pens on pasture. The birds and pens were moved daily to fresh pasture. The interdisciplinary studies comprise the birds' growth performance and carcass quality, health, behaviour, leg condition and the birds’ effect on pasture. In the final study, on-farm diets were tested in a feeding experiment indoors. The data are based on four experiments carried out during 2000 to 2003. In 2000 and 2002, restricted-fed conventional broilers (ROSS 208) were reared in floorless pens on pasture and in control groups outdoors on straw. In 2001, two genotypes, ROSS 208 and the slow-growing ISA 657 were reared on three ground types, pasture, outdoors on straw and indoors on wood shavings with either an ad libitum or restricted feeding level. In 2003, a feeding experiment with slow-growing broilers fed on-farm diets in a choice feeding system was conducted indoors. Most birds were reared to 12 weeks of age, but ad libitum-fed ROSS birds were reared to 6 weeks. The experimental phase was from ca. 3 weeks to slaughter. The experiments indicate that under the given conditions - access to pasture does not offer sufficient protein and metabolizable energy to allow considerable feed savings in the farm enterprise (Paper I) - moving the floorless pens daily provides favourable conditions to prevent infections with Campylobacter and Eimeria in outdoor broilers (Paper II) - access to pasture as such appears to play no major role for the broilers' physical activity (Paper III) or leg condition (Paper IV) - broiler chickens on pasture can sustain white clover in a mixed grass/white clover pasture (Paper V) - with access to high-quality protein during the first three weeks there is a good potential to produce organic broiler meat with feed produced on-farm in northwestern Europe (Paper VI)

"Undine parte" : crítica da cultura, do poder e da linguagem

The paper aims to discuss the relations between culture, power and language in Bachmann’s story "Undine geht". Undine is a water creature that lives among humans for a period of time and this fact allows her to criticize them, their way of life, of love and of relate to others. Undine’s critique is that the discourse or language shows the domination that is present in the human relations, for example, in the submission of the individual to a collectivity, as well as in the relations between men and women. She condemns this society which is regulated by money, social roles, which are false representations and generate a repression for social and individual life. This is why Undine denounces strongly the humans and their society. But she also invites the humans to know themselves and to search for the truth. Only this can liberate them from repression and give them the possibility to live a dignified life

Ekonomiska konsekvenser av krav på bete för mjölkkor

I denna rapport om ekonomiska konsekvenser av krav på bete för mjölkkor har ett antal vetenskapliga studier granskats och effekten av betesdrift diskuterats utifrån dess nyttor och kostnader både på företags- och samhällsnivå. Några viktiga slutsatser är:  * Djurvälfärd omfattar inte endast djurens hälsa, utan även djurens känslor och uppfattning av sin situation och djurets möjligheter till att leva ett naturligt liv. Bete ger korna möjlighet till att kunna bete sig naturligt och få utlopp för sina naturliga behov.  * Den vetenskapliga litteraturen visar att det finns positiva djurvälfärds- och djurhälsoeffekter av att ge kor tillgång till bete under sommaren.  * Det är inte berättigat att bortse från de samhällsekonomiska och etiska värden som ett betestvång har, bara för att dessa värden är svåra att skatta.  * Betesdriften ger upphov till externa effekter som ofta förbises trots att de är av stor betydelse.  * Det finns mer än monetära vinster, på kort och lång sikt för djuret, den enskilde mjölkföretagaren och för samhället av att hålla kor på bete
