    A dual-Lagrangian description adapted to quantum optics in dispersive and dissipative dielectric media

    We develop a dual description of quantum optics adapted to dielectric systems without magnetic property. Our formalism, which is shown to be equivalent to the standard one within some dipolar approximations discussed in the article, is applied to the description of polaritons in dielectric media. We show that the dual formalism leads to the Huttner-Barnett equations [B. Huttner, S. M. Barnett, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{46}, 4306 (1992)] for QED in dielectric systems. More generally, we discuss the role of electromagnetic duality in the quantization procedure for optical systems and derive the structure of the dynamical laws in the various representations

    Intertemporally non-separable monetary-asset risk adjustment and aggregation

    Modern aggregation theory and index number theory were introduced into monetary aggregation by Barnett (1980). The widely used Divisia monetary aggregates were based upon that paper. A key result upon which the rest of the theory depended was Barnett's derivation of the user-cost price of monetary assets. To make that critical part of Barnett''s results available prior to publication of that paper in the Journal of Econometrics, Barnett repeated that proof two years earlier in Economics Letters. Both papers have become seminal to the subsequent literature on monetary asset quantity and user cost aggregation. The extension of that literature to risk with intertemporally non-separable preferences now has become available in a working paper by Barnett and Wu (2004), and that paper will appear in volume 1, number 1 of the new journal, Annals of Finance. We are making available the key results from that paper below, without the proofs, which will be available in the longer paper.

    On the Quantum Phase Operator for Coherent States

    In papers by Lynch [Phys. Rev. A41, 2841 (1990)] and Gerry and Urbanski [Phys. Rev. A42, 662 (1990)] it has been argued that the phase-fluctuation laser experiments of Gerhardt, B\"uchler and Lifkin [Phys. Lett. 49A, 119 (1974)] are in good agreement with the variance of the Pegg-Barnett phase operator for a coherent state, even for a small number of photons. We argue that this is not conclusive. In fact, we show that the variance of the phase in fact depends on the relative phase between the phase of the coherent state and the off-set phase ϕ0\phi_0 of the Pegg-Barnett phase operator. This off-set phase is replaced with the phase of a reference beam in an actual experiment and we show that several choices of such a relative phase can be fitted to the experimental data. We also discuss the Noh, Foug\`{e}res and Mandel [Phys.Rev. A46, 2840 (1992)] relative phase experiment in terms of the Pegg-Barnett phase taking post-selection conditions into account.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures.
