Simulation of Multi-element Antenna Systems for Navigation Applications
The application of user terminals with multiple antenna inputs for use with the global satellite navigation systems like GPS and Galileo becomes more and more attraction in last years. Multiple antennas may be spread over the user platform and provide signals required for the platform attitude estimation or may be arranged in an antenna array to be used together with array processing algorithms for improving signal reception, e.g. for multipath and interference mitigation. In order to generate signals for testing of receivers with multiple antenna inputs and corresponding receiver algorithms in a laboratory environment a unique HW signal simulation tool for wavefront simulation has been developed. The signals for a number of antenna elements in a flexible user defined geometry are first generated as digital signals in baseband and then mixed up to individual RF-outputs. The paper describes the principle function of the system and addresses some calibration issues. Measurement set-ups and results of data processing with simulated signals for different applications are shown and discussed
3-D Statistical Channel Model for Millimeter-Wave Outdoor Mobile Broadband Communications
This paper presents an omnidirectional spatial and temporal 3-dimensional
statistical channel model for 28 GHz dense urban non-line of sight
environments. The channel model is developed from 28 GHz ultrawideband
propagation measurements obtained with a 400 megachips per second broadband
sliding correlator channel sounder and highly directional, steerable horn
antennas in New York City. A 3GPP-like statistical channel model that is easy
to implement in software or hardware is developed from measured power delay
profiles and a synthesized method for providing absolute propagation delays
recovered from 3-D ray-tracing, as well as measured angle of departure and
angle of arrival power spectra. The extracted statistics are used to implement
a MATLAB-based statistical simulator that generates 3-D millimeter-wave
temporal and spatial channel coefficients that reproduce realistic impulse
responses of measured urban channels. The methods and model presented here can
be used for millimeter-wave system-wide simulations, and air interface design
and capacity analyses.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, ICC 2015 (London, UK, to appear
The Cosmic Background Imager
Design and performance details are given for the Cosmic Background Imager
(CBI), an interferometer array that is measuring the power spectrum of
fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) for multipoles
in the range 400 < l < 3500. The CBI is located at an altitude of 5000 m in the
Atacama Desert in northern Chile. It is a planar synthesis array with 13 0.9-m
diameter antennas on a 6-m diameter tracking platform. Each antenna has a
cooled, low-noise receiver operating in the 26-36 GHz band. Signals are
cross-correlated in an analog filterbank correlator with ten 1 GHz bands. This
allows spectral index measurements which can be used to distinguish CMBR
signals from diffuse galactic foregrounds. A 1.2 kHz 180-deg phase switching
scheme is used to reject cross-talk and low-frequency pick-up in the signal
processing system. The CBI has a 3-axis mount which allows the tracking
platform to be rotated about the optical axis, providing improved (u,v)
coverage and a powerful discriminant against false signals generated in the
receiving electronics. Rotating the tracking platform also permits polarization
measurements when some of the antennas are configured for the orthogonal
polarization.Comment: 14 pages. Accepted for publication in PASP. See also

Collection and processing of data from a phase-coherent meteor radar
An analysis of the measurement accuracy requirement of a high resolution meteor radar for observing short period, atmospheric waves is presented, and a system which satisfies the requirements is described. A medium scale, real time computer is programmed to perform all echo recognition and coordinate measurement functions. The measurement algorithms are exercised on noisy data generated by a program which simulates the hardware system, in order to find the effects of noise on the measurement accuracies
