This paper provides Closed-form expressions for the average channel capacity and probability of outage of dual-branch Selection Combining (SC) over uncorrelated Nakagami-0.5 fading channels. This channel capacity and probability of outage are evaluated under Optimum Power with Rate Adaptation (OPRA) and Truncated channel Inversion with Fixed Rate transmission (TIFR) schemes. Since, the channel capacity and probability of outage expressions contain an infinite series, the series are truncated and bounds on the truncated errors are presented. The corresponding expressions for Nakagami-0.5 fading are called expressions under worst fading condition with severe fading. Finally, numerical results are presented, which are then compared to the channel capacity and probability of outage results for no diversity case, which has been previously published under OPRA and TIFR schemes. It has been observed that OPRA provides improved average channel capacity and probability of outage, as compared to TIFR under worst case of fading

A Comparative Study of Relaying Schemes with Decode-and-Forward over Nakagami-m Fading Channels

Utilizing relaying techniques to improve performance of wireless systems is a promising avenue. However, it is crucial to understand what type of relaying schemes should be used for achieving different performance objectives under realistic fading conditions. In this paper, we present a general framework for modelling and evaluating the performance of relaying schemes based on the decode-and-forward (DF) protocol over independent and not necessarily identically distributed (INID) Nakagami-m fading channels. In particular, we present closed-form expressions for the statistics of the instantaneous output signal-to-noise ratio of four significant relaying schemes with DF; two based on repetitive transmission and the other two based on relay selection (RS). These expressions are then used to obtain closed-form expressions for the outage probability and the average symbol error probability for several modulations of all considered relaying schemes over INID Nakagami-m fading. Importantly, it is shown that when the channel state information for RS is perfect, RS-based transmission schemes always outperform repetitive ones. Furthermore, when the direct link between the source and the destination nodes is sufficiently strong, relaying may not result in any gains and in this case it should be switched-off.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Computer Systems, Networks, and Communication

The results of spectral efficiencies for optimum rate adaptation with constant power (ORA) and channel inversion with fixed rate (CIFR) schemes over uncorrelated diversity branch with Selection Combining (SC) available so far in literature are applicable only for m?1.This paper derived closed-form expressions for the spectral efficiency of dual-branch SC over uncorrelated Nakagami-0.5(m<1) fading channels. This spectral efficiency is evaluated under ORA and CIFR schemes. Since, the spectral efficiency expression under ORA scheme contains an infinite series, hence bounds on the errors resulting from truncating the infinite series have been derived The corresponding expressions for Nakagami-0.5 fading are called expressions under worst fading condition with severe fading. Finally, numerical results are presented, which are then compared to the spectral efficiency results which have been previously published for ORA and CIFR schemes. It has been observed that by employing SC, spectral efficiency improves under ORA, but does not improve under CIF

A very efficient technique that reduces fading and channel interference influence is selection diversity based on the signal to interference ratio (SIR). In this pa¬per, system performances of selection combiner (SC) over correlated Nakagami-m channels with constant correlation model are analyzed. Closed-form expressions are obtained for the output SIR probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) which is main contribution of this paper. Outage probability and the average error probability for coherent, noncoherent modulation are derived. Numerical results presented in this paper point out the effects of fading severity and cor¬relation on the system performances. The main contribu¬tion of this analysis for multibranch signal combiner is that it has been done for general case of correlated co-channel interference (CCI)
