Spoken content retrieval: A survey of techniques and technologies
Speech media, that is, digital audio and video containing spoken content, has blossomed in recent years. Large collections are accruing on the Internet as well as in private and enterprise settings. This growth has motivated extensive research on techniques and technologies that facilitate reliable indexing and retrieval. Spoken content retrieval (SCR) requires the combination of audio and speech processing technologies with methods from information retrieval (IR). SCR research initially investigated planned speech structured in document-like units, but has subsequently shifted focus to more informal spoken content produced spontaneously, outside of the studio and in conversational settings. This survey provides an overview of the field of SCR encompassing component technologies, the relationship of SCR to text IR and automatic speech recognition and user interaction issues. It is aimed at researchers with backgrounds in speech technology or IR who are seeking deeper insight on how these fields are integrated to support research and development, thus addressing the core challenges of SCR
A Cross-media Retrieval System for Lecture Videos
We propose a cross-media lecture-on-demand system, in which users can
selectively view specific segments of lecture videos by submitting text
queries. Users can easily formulate queries by using the textbook associated
with a target lecture, even if they cannot come up with effective keywords. Our
system extracts the audio track from a target lecture video, generates a
transcription by large vocabulary continuous speech recognition, and produces a
text index. Experimental results showed that by adapting speech recognition to
the topic of the lecture, the recognition accuracy increased and the retrieval
accuracy was comparable with that obtained by human transcription
Towards a Knowledge Graph based Speech Interface
Applications which use human speech as an input require a speech interface
with high recognition accuracy. The words or phrases in the recognised text are
annotated with a machine-understandable meaning and linked to knowledge graphs
for further processing by the target application. These semantic annotations of
recognised words can be represented as a subject-predicate-object triples which
collectively form a graph often referred to as a knowledge graph. This type of
knowledge representation facilitates to use speech interfaces with any spoken
input application, since the information is represented in logical, semantic
form, retrieving and storing can be followed using any web standard query
languages. In this work, we develop a methodology for linking speech input to
knowledge graphs and study the impact of recognition errors in the overall
process. We show that for a corpus with lower WER, the annotation and linking
of entities to the DBpedia knowledge graph is considerable. DBpedia Spotlight,
a tool to interlink text documents with the linked open data is used to link
the speech recognition output to the DBpedia knowledge graph. Such a
knowledge-based speech recognition interface is useful for applications such as

Modeling Topic and Role Information in Meetings using the Hierarchical Dirichlet Process
Abstract. In this paper, we address the modeling of topic and role information in multiparty meetings, via a nonparametric Bayesian model called the hierarchical Dirichlet process. This model provides a powerful solution to topic modeling and a flexible framework for the incorporation of other cues such as speaker role information. We present our modeling framework for topic and role on the AMI Meeting Corpus, and illustrate the effectiveness of the approach in the context of adapting a baseline language model in a large-vocabulary automatic speech recognition system for multiparty meetings. The adapted LM produces significant improvements in terms of both perplexity and word error rate.
Radio Oranje: Enhanced Access to a Historical Spoken Word Collection
Access to historical audio collections is typically very restricted:\ud
content is often only available on physical (analog) media and the\ud
metadata is usually limited to keywords, giving access at the level\ud
of relatively large fragments, e.g., an entire tape. Many spoken\ud
word heritage collections are now being digitized, which allows the\ud
introduction of more advanced search technology. This paper presents\ud
an approach that supports online access and search for recordings of\ud
historical speeches. A demonstrator has been built, based on the\ud
so-called Radio Oranje collection, which contains radio speeches by\ud
the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina that were broadcast during World War II.\ud
The audio has been aligned with its original 1940s manual\ud
transcriptions to create a time-stamped index that enables the speeches to be\ud
searched at the word level. Results are presented together with\ud
