Pick and Place Without Geometric Object Models
We propose a novel formulation of robotic pick and place as a deep
reinforcement learning (RL) problem. Whereas most deep RL approaches to robotic
manipulation frame the problem in terms of low level states and actions, we
propose a more abstract formulation. In this formulation, actions are target
reach poses for the hand and states are a history of such reaches. We show this
approach can solve a challenging class of pick-place and regrasping problems
where the exact geometry of the objects to be handled is unknown. The only
information our method requires is: 1) the sensor perception available to the
robot at test time; 2) prior knowledge of the general class of objects for
which the system was trained. We evaluate our method using objects belonging to
two different categories, mugs and bottles, both in simulation and on real
hardware. Results show a major improvement relative to a shape primitives

Robotic Pick-and-Place of Novel Objects in Clutter with Multi-Affordance Grasping and Cross-Domain Image Matching
This paper presents a robotic pick-and-place system that is capable of
grasping and recognizing both known and novel objects in cluttered
environments. The key new feature of the system is that it handles a wide range
of object categories without needing any task-specific training data for novel
objects. To achieve this, it first uses a category-agnostic affordance
prediction algorithm to select and execute among four different grasping
primitive behaviors. It then recognizes picked objects with a cross-domain
image classification framework that matches observed images to product images.
Since product images are readily available for a wide range of objects (e.g.,
from the web), the system works out-of-the-box for novel objects without
requiring any additional training data. Exhaustive experimental results
demonstrate that our multi-affordance grasping achieves high success rates for
a wide variety of objects in clutter, and our recognition algorithm achieves
high accuracy for both known and novel grasped objects. The approach was part
of the MIT-Princeton Team system that took 1st place in the stowing task at the
2017 Amazon Robotics Challenge. All code, datasets, and pre-trained models are

Data-Driven Grasp Synthesis - A Survey
We review the work on data-driven grasp synthesis and the methodologies for
sampling and ranking candidate grasps. We divide the approaches into three
groups based on whether they synthesize grasps for known, familiar or unknown
objects. This structure allows us to identify common object representations and
perceptual processes that facilitate the employed data-driven grasp synthesis
technique. In the case of known objects, we concentrate on the approaches that
are based on object recognition and pose estimation. In the case of familiar
objects, the techniques use some form of a similarity matching to a set of
previously encountered objects. Finally for the approaches dealing with unknown
objects, the core part is the extraction of specific features that are
indicative of good grasps. Our survey provides an overview of the different
methodologies and discusses open problems in the area of robot grasping. We
also draw a parallel to the classical approaches that rely on analytic

A Whole-Body Pose Taxonomy for Loco-Manipulation Tasks
Exploiting interaction with the environment is a promising and powerful way
to enhance stability of humanoid robots and robustness while executing
locomotion and manipulation tasks. Recently some works have started to show
advances in this direction considering humanoid locomotion with multi-contacts,
but to be able to fully develop such abilities in a more autonomous way, we
need to first understand and classify the variety of possible poses a humanoid
robot can achieve to balance. To this end, we propose the adaptation of a
successful idea widely used in the field of robot grasping to the field of
humanoid balance with multi-contacts: a whole-body pose taxonomy classifying
the set of whole-body robot configurations that use the environment to enhance
stability. We have revised criteria of classification used to develop grasping
taxonomies, focusing on structuring and simplifying the large number of
possible poses the human body can adopt. We propose a taxonomy with 46 poses,
containing three main categories, considering number and type of supports as
well as possible transitions between poses. The taxonomy induces a
classification of motion primitives based on the pose used for support, and a
set of rules to store and generate new motions. We present preliminary results
that apply known segmentation techniques to motion data from the KIT whole-body
motion database. Using motion capture data with multi-contacts, we can identify
support poses providing a segmentation that can distinguish between locomotion

Understanding of Object Manipulation Actions Using Human Multi-Modal Sensory Data
Object manipulation actions represent an important share of the Activities of
Daily Living (ADLs). In this work, we study how to enable service robots to use
human multi-modal data to understand object manipulation actions, and how they
can recognize such actions when humans perform them during human-robot
collaboration tasks. The multi-modal data in this study consists of videos,
hand motion data, applied forces as represented by the pressure patterns on the
hand, and measurements of the bending of the fingers, collected as human
subjects performed manipulation actions. We investigate two different
approaches. In the first one, we show that multi-modal signal (motion, finger
bending and hand pressure) generated by the action can be decomposed into a set
of primitives that can be seen as its building blocks. These primitives are
used to define 24 multi-modal primitive features. The primitive features can in
turn be used as an abstract representation of the multi-modal signal and
employed for action recognition. In the latter approach, the visual features
are extracted from the data using a pre-trained image classification deep
convolutional neural network. The visual features are subsequently used to
train the classifier. We also investigate whether adding data from other
modalities produces a statistically significant improvement in the classifier
performance. We show that both approaches produce a comparable performance.
This implies that image-based methods can successfully recognize human actions
during human-robot collaboration. On the other hand, in order to provide
training data for the robot so it can learn how to perform object manipulation
actions, multi-modal data provides a better alternative
Learning Feedback Terms for Reactive Planning and Control
With the advancement of robotics, machine learning, and machine perception,
increasingly more robots will enter human environments to assist with daily
tasks. However, dynamically-changing human environments requires reactive
motion plans. Reactivity can be accomplished through replanning, e.g.
model-predictive control, or through a reactive feedback policy that modifies
on-going behavior in response to sensory events. In this paper, we investigate
how to use machine learning to add reactivity to a previously learned nominal
skilled behavior. We approach this by learning a reactive modification term for
movement plans represented by nonlinear differential equations. In particular,
we use dynamic movement primitives (DMPs) to represent a skill and a neural
network to learn a reactive policy from human demonstrations. We use the well
explored domain of obstacle avoidance for robot manipulation as a test bed. Our
approach demonstrates how a neural network can be combined with physical
insights to ensure robust behavior across different obstacle settings and
movement durations. Evaluations on an anthropomorphic robotic system

Supervised Autonomous Locomotion and Manipulation for Disaster Response with a Centaur-like Robot
Mobile manipulation tasks are one of the key challenges in the field of
search and rescue (SAR) robotics requiring robots with flexible locomotion and
manipulation abilities. Since the tasks are mostly unknown in advance, the
robot has to adapt to a wide variety of terrains and workspaces during a
mission. The centaur-like robot Centauro has a hybrid legged-wheeled base and
an anthropomorphic upper body to carry out complex tasks in environments too
dangerous for humans. Due to its high number of degrees of freedom, controlling
the robot with direct teleoperation approaches is challenging and exhausting.
Supervised autonomy approaches are promising to increase quality and speed of
control while keeping the flexibility to solve unknown tasks. We developed a
set of operator assistance functionalities with different levels of autonomy to
control the robot for challenging locomotion and manipulation tasks. The
integrated system was evaluated in disaster response scenarios and showed
