    RADAR IMAGE PROCESSING FOR APPLICATIONS IN TARGET RECOGNITION

    This paper describes some algorithms for radar imaging and radar image processing with practical applications in target recognition. A radar-computer interface to digitize and to input signals from incoherent marine surveillance radar into computer as well as specialized signal processing to reduce the amount of information that will be recorded into the computer for further processing is described. Some experimental results that present digitized signals as images, improve their quality and extract more information about the target of observation are demonstrated. The availability of more information about the targets allows to predict their manoeuvring features and hence to improve the targets tracking. Experiments illustrate the ability of radar target recognition to improve tracking and as such to increase the safety of navigation at sea

    Automatic radar target identification is a very difficult task because data are very noisy and very few is known to decide which part of the signal is important. Identification techniques could help to build more efficient radars but also to better understand how this signal could be interpreted. We present here some connectionist techniques that have been tested on this task. They offer rather good identification rate but do not yet permit to understand the hidden structure of the signal. 1. Introduction Neural Networks are nowadays widely used for signal recognition. Most of the time, there also exists classical tools to perform similar processing and experts of the corresponding domain can also bring a very interesting knowledge.
