Automated Analysis of Compositional Multi-Agent Systems
Abstract. An approach for handling the complex dynamics of a multi-agent system is based on distinguishing aggregation levels. The behaviour at a given aggregation level is specified by a set of dynamic properties at that level, expressed in some (temporal) language. Such behavioural specifications may be complex and difficult to analyse. To enable automated analysis of system specifications, a simpler format is required. To this end, a specification at a lower aggregation level can be created, describing basic steps in the processes of a system. This paper presents a method and tool to support the automated creation of such a specification, as a refinement of a given higher level specification. The generated specification has a simple format which can easily be used for analysis. This paper describes an approach for automated verification of logical consequences of specifications using model checking techniques
Identifying Security-Critical Cyber-Physical Components in Industrial Control Systems
In recent years, Industrial Control Systems (ICS) have become an appealing
target for cyber attacks, having massive destructive consequences. Security
metrics are therefore essential to assess their security posture. In this
paper, we present a novel ICS security metric based on AND/OR graphs that
represent cyber-physical dependencies among network components. Our metric is
able to efficiently identify sets of critical cyber-physical components, with
minimal cost for an attacker, such that if compromised, the system would enter
into a non-operational state. We address this problem by efficiently
transforming the input AND/OR graph-based model into a weighted logical formula
that is then used to build and solve a Weighted Partial MAX-SAT problem. Our
tool, META4ICS, leverages state-of-the-art techniques from the field of logical
satisfiability optimisation in order to achieve efficient computation times.
Our experimental results indicate that the proposed security metric can
efficiently scale to networks with thousands of nodes and be computed in
seconds. In addition, we present a case study where we have used our system to
analyse the security posture of a realistic water transport network. We discuss
our findings on the plant as well as further security applications of our
metric.Comment: Keywords: Security metrics, industrial control systems,

The 'what' and 'how' of learning in design, invited paper
Previous experiences hold a wealth of knowledge which we often take for granted and use unknowingly through our every day working lives. In design, those experiences can play a crucial role in the success or failure of a design project, having a great deal of influence on the quality, cost and development time of a product. But how can we empower computer based design systems to acquire this knowledge? How would we use such systems to support design? This paper outlines some of the work which has been carried out in applying and developing Machine Learning techniques to support the design activity; particularly in utilising previous designs and learning the design process
Modal logics are coalgebraic
Applications of modal logics are abundant in computer science, and a large number of structurally different modal logics have been successfully employed in a diverse spectrum of application contexts. Coalgebraic semantics, on the other hand, provides a uniform and encompassing view on the large variety of specific logics used in particular domains. The coalgebraic approach is generic and compositional: tools and techniques simultaneously apply to a large class of application areas and can moreover be combined in a modular way. In particular, this facilitates a pick-and-choose approach to domain specific formalisms, applicable across the entire scope of application areas, leading to generic software tools that are easier to design, to implement, and to maintain. This paper substantiates the authors' firm belief that the systematic exploitation of the coalgebraic nature of modal logic will not only have impact on the field of modal logic itself but also lead to significant progress in a number of areas within computer science, such as knowledge representation and concurrency/mobility
