Core Services in the Architecture of the National Digital Library for Science Education (NSDL)

We describe the core components of the architecture for the (NSDL) National Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology Education Digital Library. Over time the NSDL will include heterogeneous users, content, and services. To accommodate this, a design for a technical and organization infrastructure has been formulated based on the notion of a spectrum of interoperability. This paper describes the first phase of the interoperability infrastructure including the metadata repository, search and discovery services, rights management services, and user interface portal facilities

The tools and methods used for the configuration management of the artifacts (including software and documentation) associated with the Guidance and Control Software (GCS) project are described. The GCS project is part of a software error studies research program. Three implementations of GCS are being produced in order to study the fundamental characteristics of the software failure process. The Code Management System (CMS) is used to track and retrieve versions of the documentation and software. Application of the CMS for this project is described and the numbering scheme is delineated for the versions of the project artifacts

Document workflow and management, be them scanned documents, computer-generated e-documents or complex file formats, are critical elements for the success of an organization. Delivering the correct information to the right person, at the right moment is a fundamental element of daily activity. In the Internet era, documents have a new format; and what is more important: completely new functions. Paper is replaced by electronic formats such as .html, .xms, .pdf or .doc. The price for this progress is the increasing technological complexity, and with this complexity comes the need for more efficient techniques of management and organization such as a document management electronic system. This paper aims to present document management not as a separate software category on the IT market, but as an element integrated with any software solution, maximizing its capacity of making business more efficient.document management electronic system, document workflow, document libraries, workflow applications.

Practices, policies, and problems in the management of learning data: A survey of libraries’ use of digital learning objects and the data they create

    Get PDF
This study analyzed libraries’ management of the data generated by library digital learning objects (DLO’s) such as forms, surveys, quizzes, and tutorials. A substantial proportion of respondents reported having a policy relevant to learning data, typically a campus-level policy, but most did not. Other problems included a lack of access to library learning data, concerns about student privacy, inadequate granularity or standardization, and a lack of knowledge about colleagues’ practices. We propose more dialogue on learning data within libraries, between libraries and administrators, and across the library profession
