A Review on Consumer Health Information Technology Research in IS

While there is a rapid growth in the application of consumer health information technology (CHIT), its growth as an area of interest in IS research is still relatively slow. While there is great potential for research in this area, knowledge barriers to conducting CHIT research do exist. These include a lack of a clear definition of CHIT and lack of knowledge on the current state of CHIT research in IS. To overcome these barriers, we offer a definition of CHIT and then use that definition, together with the IT artifact perspective, to conduct a thematic analysis of CHIT research in the IS domain. We find that CHIT research spans all five IT views but to different degrees: nominal, proxy, and tool views are the most widely used perspectives. Based on our analysis, we suggest future research directions to enrich understanding of CHIT

Quality and reliability of online health related information are some of the challenges faced by online health information seekers. This study proposes the consideration of criteria in meeting clients\u27 needs when evaluating health websites. An investigation of website content of cerebral palsy agencies in Australia was conducted to determine whether the content presented meets the needs of parents\u27 concerns identified in the cerebral palsy literature. The results show that these websites do provide sufficient quality information to help parents of children with cerebral palsy. Outcome of this research informs website designers on the importance of deploying information that aids information seekers to gain knowledge and help in decision making. This paper highlights the importance of health websites functioning as knowledge brokers and success of the website is therefore contextually dependent on meeting users\u27 needs. It is proposed to include the role of a content analyst in the content management team to act as a key partner liaising with a content expert and the content management team to ensure effective content deployment

Research has extensively demonstrated that healthcare industry has rapidly implemented and adopted information technology in recent years. Research in health information technology (HIT), which represents a major component of the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, demonstrates similar findings. In this paper, review the literature to better understand the work on HIT that researchers have conducted in HICSS from 2008 to 2017. In doing so, we identify themes, methods, technology types, research populations, context, and emerged research gaps from the reviewed literature. With much change and development in the HIT field and varying levels of adoption, this review uncovers, catalogs, and analyzes the research in HIT at HICSS in this ten-year period and provides future directions for research in the field
