Supporting simulation in industry through the application of grid computing
An increased need for collaborative research, together with continuing advances in communication technology and computer hardware, has facilitated the development of distributed systems that can provide users access to geographically dispersed computing resources that are administered in multiple computer domains. The term grid computing, or grids, is popularly used to refer to such distributed systems. Simulation is characterized by the need to run multiple sets of computationally intensive experiments. Large scale scientific simulations have traditionally been the primary benefactor of grid computing. The application of this technology to simulation in industry has, however, been negligible. This research investigates how grid technology can be effectively exploited by users to model simulations in industry. It introduces our desktop grid, WinGrid, and presents a case study conducted at a leading European investment bank. Results indicate that grid computing does indeed hold promise for simulation in industry

Component-aware Orchestration of Cloud-based Enterprise Applications, from TOSCA to Docker and Kubernetes
Enterprise IT is currently facing the challenge of coordinating the
management of complex, multi-component applications across heterogeneous cloud
platforms. Containers and container orchestrators provide a valuable solution
to deploy multi-component applications over cloud platforms, by coupling the
lifecycle of each application component to that of its hosting container. We
hereby propose a solution for going beyond such a coupling, based on the OASIS
standard TOSCA and on Docker. We indeed propose a novel approach for deploying
multi-component applications on top of existing container orchestrators, which
allows to manage each component independently from the container used to run
it. We also present prototype tools implementing our approach, and we show how
we effectively exploited them to carry out a concrete case study
A method for the architectural design of distributed control systems for large, civil jet engines: a systems engineering approach
The design of distributed control systems (DCSs) for large, civil gas turbine engines is a complex
architectural challenge. To date, the majority of research into DCSs has focused on the contributing
technologies and high temperature electronics rather than the architecture of the system itself. This
thesis proposes a method for the architectural design of distributed systems using a genetic algorithm to
generate, evaluate and refine designs. The proposed designs are analysed for their architectural quality,
lifecycle value and commercial benefit. The method is presented along with results proving the concept.
Whilst the method described here is applied exclusively to Distributed Control System (DCS) for jet
engines, the principles and methods could be adapted for a broad range of complex systems

Panel on future challenges in modeling methodology
This panel paper presents the views of six researchers and practitioners of simulation modeling. Collectively we attempt to address a range of key future challenges to modeling methodology. It is hoped that the views of this paper, and the presentations made by the panelists at the 2004 Winter Simulation Conference will raise awareness and stimulate further discussion on the future of modeling methodology in areas such as modeling problems in business applications, human factors and geographically dispersed networks; rapid model development and maintenance; legacy modeling approaches; markup languages; virtual interactive process design and simulation; standards; and Grid computing
