Space station architectural elements model study
The space station must unite the properties and behavior of individual and place, using proportions from both to make whole the understanding of ourselves at this moment in evolution. Harmonious proportions in any environment are similar to the acceptance and enjoyment of the harmony of many well-tuned musical instruments. A well-tuned or well-ordered environment tends to have invisible proportions. They produce order but do not intrude on the perception and cognitive mapping of the environment. Systems of proportion are not ends in themselves but are a means to select a series of spaces which relate one to another in dimensionally specific terms. These internal relationships create a whole when the forms are harmonious. This harmonic relationship is of intrinsic value for individuals to be physically and psychologically in balance with their universe
Autonomic Cloud Computing: Open Challenges and Architectural Elements
As Clouds are complex, large-scale, and heterogeneous distributed systems,
management of their resources is a challenging task. They need automated and
integrated intelligent strategies for provisioning of resources to offer
services that are secure, reliable, and cost-efficient. Hence, effective
management of services becomes fundamental in software platforms that
constitute the fabric of computing Clouds. In this direction, this paper
identifies open issues in autonomic resource provisioning and presents
innovative management techniques for supporting SaaS applications hosted on
Clouds. We present a conceptual architecture and early results evidencing the

Elements of interior architectural design against stylish approaches
The importance of this book is related to different reasons. Firstly
it deals with interior architectural design that is a key topic in
architectural practice even if it is a neglected subject in most schools
of architecture nowadays as “interior design is often misunderstood
as only a kind of decoration”.[1] On the contrary, as Prof. Chen
Yi states, “we believe that interior design and architectural design
were indistinguishable since the beginning of the civilization”.[2]
As a matter of fact interior space is “the space enclosed by walls,
wherever they are arranged or configured. It is primary and
characterizing of every architectural work, it is addressed to the
fruition by whom it is going through, crossing or stopping; […]
it has a meaning clearly distinct from that of the other figurative

Software-Defined Cloud Computing: Architectural Elements and Open Challenges
The variety of existing cloud services creates a challenge for service
providers to enforce reasonable Software Level Agreements (SLA) stating the
Quality of Service (QoS) and penalties in case QoS is not achieved. To avoid
such penalties at the same time that the infrastructure operates with minimum
energy and resource wastage, constant monitoring and adaptation of the
infrastructure is needed. We refer to Software-Defined Cloud Computing, or
simply Software-Defined Clouds (SDC), as an approach for automating the process
of optimal cloud configuration by extending virtualization concept to all
resources in a data center. An SDC enables easy reconfiguration and adaptation
of physical resources in a cloud infrastructure, to better accommodate the
demand on QoS through a software that can describe and manage various aspects
comprising the cloud environment. In this paper, we present an architecture for
SDCs on data centers with emphasis on mobile cloud applications. We present an
evaluation, showcasing the potential of SDC in two use cases-QoS-aware
bandwidth allocation and bandwidth-aware, energy-efficient VM placement-and

Better abstractions for reusable components & architectures
Software architecture (SA) is a crucial component of Model Driven Engineering (MDE), since it eases the communication and reuse of designs and components. However, existing languages (e.g., UML, AADL, SysML) are lacking many needed features. In particular, they provide rudimentary support for connectors, a first-class element in the components and connectors (C&C) architectural view and one of the most reusable architectural elements. This is unfortunate, since the difficult properties that need to be guaranteed for complex systems are mainly the non-functional properties, like throughput, security and dependability, which are greatly influenced by the employed connectors. This work reviews the basic abstractions of the C&C view of SA and examines extra architectural elements which can support the detailed, explicit and separate description of behaviour, interaction and control logic
Space station architectural elements model study
The worksphere, a user controlled computer workstation enclosure, was expanded in scope to an engineering workstation suitable for use on the Space Station as a crewmember desk in orbit. The concept was also explored as a module control station capable of enclosing enough equipment to control the station from each module. The concept has commercial potential for the Space Station and surface workstation applications. The central triangular beam interior configuration was expanded and refined to seven different beam configurations. These included triangular on center, triangular off center, square, hexagonal small, hexagonal medium, hexagonal large and the H beam. Each was explored with some considerations as to the utilities and a suggested evaluation factor methodology was presented. Scale models of each concept were made. The models were helpful in researching the seven beam configurations and determining the negative residual (unused) volume of each configuration. A flexible hardware evaluation factor concept is proposed which could be helpful in evaluating interior space volumes from a human factors point of view. Mechanical characterization of a new architectural concrete with glass-recycled aggregate
Concrete is a material which is widely used in architecture, not only for structural purposes but also for architectural elements for its versatility and excellent performance. However, the manufacturing of this material as a mixture of water, cement, and ¿ne and coarse aggregate comes with a high environmental cost, such as gas emissions, among other things. This is the reason why di¿erent alternatives are being proposed in order to replace coarse aggregates with other recycled materials, as it is one of the less sustainable components of the mixture in terms of extraction. One of these alternatives is recycled glass coming from drinking bottles, crushed into small grains and mixed in the same proportions as regular aggregates. This study proposes the mechanical characterization of a new architectural concrete mixture by using white Lafarge cement and glass-recycled aggregates. This proposed concrete is made especially for architectural elements like façade panels, rather than structural elements. The mechanical evaluation of this new material is done through a set of experimental tests under compression and also bending, comparing three di¿erent ratios of glass aggregate in the mixture.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Issues of Architectural Description Languages for Handling Dynamic Reconfiguration
Dynamic reconfiguration is the action of modifying a software system at
runtime. Several works have been using architectural specification as the basis
for dynamic reconfiguration. Indeed ADLs (architecture description languages)
let architects describe the elements that could be reconfigured as well as the
set of constraints to which the system must conform during reconfiguration. In
this work, we investigate the ADL literature in order to illustrate how
reconfiguration is supported in four well-known ADLs: pi-ADL, ACME, C2SADL and
Dynamic Wright. From this review, we conclude that none of these ADLs: (i)
addresses the issue of consistently reconfiguring both instances and types;
(ii) takes into account the behaviour of architectural elements during
reconfiguration; and (iii) provides support for assessing reconfiguration,

Houses in Malaysia: Fusion of the east and the west
A great number of architectural scholars in Malaysia learned about western architecture to be used as precedent studies in their design. Few realized that part of the origin of the modern western architecture was actually from the east. Segments of the new approaches in modern architecture was already part and parcels of the local eastern heritage. The trend of following the west was also evident in the design of the modern detached houses. However, the already existed easten local heritage inevitably also played a major contribution to the thinking process of the designers. The main aim of the book is to unfold or clarify the origins of architectural elements in modern detached houses in Malaysia. The significance of the book is to establish the factors that contribute to the architectural thinking of the local architects besides clarifying the current trend or direction of the present style in Malaysia. In other words, to get a clearer picture of the past architecture in order to formulate or suggest a clearer guidelines or criteria for architectural design in the future
