Small Extended Formulation for Knapsack Cover Inequalities from Monotone Circuits
Initially developed for the min-knapsack problem, the knapsack cover
inequalities are used in the current best relaxations for numerous
combinatorial optimization problems of covering type. In spite of their
widespread use, these inequalities yield linear programming (LP) relaxations of
exponential size, over which it is not known how to optimize exactly in
polynomial time. In this paper we address this issue and obtain LP relaxations
of quasi-polynomial size that are at least as strong as that given by the
knapsack cover inequalities.
For the min-knapsack cover problem, our main result can be stated formally as
follows: for any , there is a -size LP relaxation with an integrality gap of at most ,
where is the number of items. Prior to this work, there was no known
relaxation of subexponential size with a constant upper bound on the
integrality gap.
Our construction is inspired by a connection between extended formulations
and monotone circuit complexity via Karchmer-Wigderson games. In particular,
our LP is based on -depth monotone circuits with fan-in~ for
evaluating weighted threshold functions with inputs, as constructed by
Beimel and Weinreb. We believe that a further understanding of this connection
may lead to more positive results complementing the numerous lower bounds
recently proved for extended formulations.Comment: 21 page
Scheduling to Minimize Total Weighted Completion Time via Time-Indexed Linear Programming Relaxations
We study approximation algorithms for scheduling problems with the objective
of minimizing total weighted completion time, under identical and related
machine models with job precedence constraints. We give algorithms that improve
upon many previous 15 to 20-year-old state-of-art results. A major theme in
these results is the use of time-indexed linear programming relaxations. These
are natural relaxations for their respective problems, but surprisingly are not
studied in the literature.
We also consider the scheduling problem of minimizing total weighted
completion time on unrelated machines. The recent breakthrough result of
[Bansal-Srinivasan-Svensson, STOC 2016] gave a -approximation for the
problem, based on some lift-and-project SDP relaxation. Our main result is that
a -approximation can also be achieved using a natural and
considerably simpler time-indexed LP relaxation for the problem. We hope this
relaxation can provide new insights into the problem
Non-Uniform Robust Network Design in Planar Graphs
Robust optimization is concerned with constructing solutions that remain
feasible also when a limited number of resources is removed from the solution.
Most studies of robust combinatorial optimization to date made the assumption
that every resource is equally vulnerable, and that the set of scenarios is
implicitly given by a single budget constraint. This paper studies a robustness
model of a different kind. We focus on \textbf{bulk-robustness}, a model
recently introduced~\cite{bulk} for addressing the need to model non-uniform
failure patterns in systems.
We significantly extend the techniques used in~\cite{bulk} to design
approximation algorithm for bulk-robust network design problems in planar
graphs. Our techniques use an augmentation framework, combined with linear
programming (LP) rounding that depends on a planar embedding of the input
graph. A connection to cut covering problems and the dominating set problem in
circle graphs is established. Our methods use few of the specifics of
bulk-robust optimization, hence it is conceivable that they can be adapted to
solve other robust network design problems.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
