Retraction with face saving: Modelling conversational interaction through dynamic hypermedia
This paper describes RWFS (Retraction With Face Saving), a hypermedia application which models an interview between a lawyer and his client â a lorry driver â facing court charges of reckless driving. At one level RWFS takes the form of a sophisticated game in which different outcomes to the interview are possible according to the learner's degree of skill. At another level, RWFS is designed to encourage the language learner's awareness and understanding of the pragmatic features of conversation. RWFS runs on HyperContext, a hybrid hypertextlexpert system developed in Pavia by two of the authors, Marco Piastra and Roberto Bolognesi, and which supports dynamic hypermedia units. HyperContext's dynamic linking capacity plays a vital role in simulating significant conversational features such as the conditioning of a current move in the conversation by information acquired much earlier in the course of the interview. In this connection, the paper discusses the contribution of RMCI (Reâusable Model of Conversational Interaction), a reâusable applicationâindependent applied model of interaction on which the game is based, and which links a tactical level (the conversation) to a metalevel which provides a moveâbyâmove commentary on interactional theory. In its turn, RMCFs metalevel is linked to a strategic level which interprets the structure of the conversation in terms of a pyramidâlike hierarchy of increasingly abstract theoretical concepts
THE WEALTH CONCEPT OF JAVANESE SOCIETY: ANTHROPOLOGICAL LINGUISTICS APPROACH IN CUBLAK-CUBLAK SUWENG FOLKSONG THE WEALTH CONCEPT OF JAVANESE SOCIETY: ANTHROPOLOGICAL LINGUISTICS APPROACH IN CUBLAK-CUBLAK SUWENG FOLKSONG
This study discusses a children's folksong which is usually sung in a children game.
The folksong, then, is analyzed using an anthropological linguistics approach.
Anthropological linguistics emphasizes on language as a major source as expressing mindset
of society. Cublak-CublakSuweng is a games song that comes from Central Java. Song -which
is part of the culture of grown society- in essence, teaches children about life precepts. This
study uses a structural approach which analyzes the use of language in the cultural
dimensions include: form, meaning, and value. Having studied the song, it turns out that
Cublak-CublakSuweng has great philosophy that reflects the Javanese society
Argotario: Computational Argumentation Meets Serious Games
An important skill in critical thinking and argumentation is the ability to
spot and recognize fallacies. Fallacious arguments, omnipresent in
argumentative discourse, can be deceptive, manipulative, or simply leading to
`wrong moves' in a discussion. Despite their importance, argumentation scholars
and NLP researchers with focus on argumentation quality have not yet
investigated fallacies empirically. The nonexistence of resources dealing with
fallacious argumentation calls for scalable approaches to data acquisition and
annotation, for which the serious games methodology offers an appealing, yet
unexplored, alternative. We present Argotario, a serious game that deals with
fallacies in everyday argumentation. Argotario is a multilingual, open-source,
platform-independent application with strong educational aspects, accessible at
