    Ubrzani industrijski razvoj doveo je do globalnih problema iscrpljivanja prirodnih resursa, zagađenja životne sredine, generisanja i akumulacije otpada. Ljušture školjki, poreklom iz prehrambene industrije, koje se u milionima tona generišu svake godine, deponuju se u priobalnim područjima gde negativno utiču na celokupnu životnu sredinu. Kao sekundarni izvor kalcijum karbonata, ovaj materijal predstavlja potencijalnu zamenu za prirodni krečnjak, čija je dostupnost ograničena.
