    Application of Developers' and Users' Dependent Factors in App Store Optimization

    This paper presents an application of developers' and users' dependent factors in the app store optimization. The application is based on two main fields: developers' dependent factors and users' dependent factors. Developers' dependent factors are identified as: developer name, app name, subtitle, genre, short description, long description, content rating, system requirements, page url, last update, what's new and price. Users' dependent factors are identified as: download volume, average rating, rating volume and reviews. The proposed application in its final form is modelled after mining sample data from two leading app stores: Google Play and Apple App Store. Results from analyzing collected data show that developer dependent elements can be better optimized. Names and descriptions of mobile apps are not fully utilized. In Google Play there is one significant correlation between download volume and number of reviews, whereas in App Store there is no significant correlation between factors

    Usage of mobile applications has become a part of our lives today, since every day we use our smartphones for communication, entertainment, business and education. High demand on apps has led to significant growth of supply, yet large offer has caused complications in users’ search of the one suitable application. The authors have made an attempt to solve the problem of facilitating the search in app stores. With the help of a website crawling software a sample of data was retrieved from one of the well-known mobile app stores and divided into 11 groups by types. These groups of data were used to construct a Knowledge Schema – a graphic model of interconnections of data that characterize any mobile app in the selected store. Schema creation is the first step in the process of developing a Knowledge Graph that will perform applications clustering to facilitate users’ search in app stores

    Along the Margins: Marginalised Communities' Ethical Concerns about Social Platforms

    In this paper, we identified marginalized communities' ethical concerns about social platforms. We performed this identification because recent platform malfeasance indicates that software teams prioritize shareholder concerns over user concerns. Additionally, these platform shortcomings often have devastating effects on marginalized populations. We first scraped 586 marginalized communities' subreddits, aggregated a dataset of their social platform mentions and manually annotated mentions of ethical concerns in these data. We subsequently analyzed trends in the manually annotated data and tested the extent to which ethical concerns can be automatically classified by means of natural language processing (NLP). We found that marginalized communities' ethical concerns predominantly revolve around discrimination and misrepresentation, and reveal deficiencies in current software development practices. As such, researchers and developers could use our work to further investigate these concerns and rectify current software flaws

    Use and misuse of the term "Experiment" in mining software repositories research

    The significant momentum and importance of Mining Software Repositories (MSR) in Software Engineering (SE) has fostered new opportunities and challenges for extensive empirical research. However, MSR researchers seem to struggle to characterize the empirical methods they use into the existing empirical SE body of knowledge. This is especially the case of MSR experiments. To provide evidence on the special characteristics of MSR experiments and their differences with experiments traditionally acknowledged in SE so far, we elicited the hallmarks that differentiate an experiment from other types of empirical studies and characterized the hallmarks and types of experiments in MSR. We analyzed MSR literature obtained from a small-scale systematic mapping study to assess the use of the term experiment in MSR. We found that 19% of the papers claiming to be an experiment are indeed not an experiment at all but also observational studies, so they use the term in a misleading way. From the remaining 81% of the papers, only one of them refers to a genuine controlled experiment while the others stand for experiments with limited control. MSR researchers tend to overlook such limitations, compromising the interpretation of the results of their studies.     Opinion Mining for Software Development: A Systematic Literature Review

    Opinion mining, sometimes referred to as sentiment analysis, has gained increasing attention in software engineering (SE) studies. SE researchers have applied opinion mining techniques in various contexts, such as identifying developers’ emotions expressed in code comments and extracting users’ critics toward mobile apps. Given the large amount of relevant studies available, it can take considerable time for researchers and developers to figure out which approaches they can adopt in their own studies and what perils these approaches entail. We conducted a systematic literature review involving 185 papers. More specifically, we present 1) well-defined categories of opinion mining-related software development activities, 2) available opinion mining approaches, whether they are evaluated when adopted in other studies, and how their performance is compared, 3) available datasets for performance evaluation and tool customization, and 4) concerns or limitations SE researchers might need to take into account when applying/customizing these opinion mining techniques. The results of our study serve as references to choose suitable opinion mining tools for software development activities, and provide critical insights for the further development of opinion mining techniques in the SE domain

    What people complain about drone apps? a large-scale empirical study of Google play store reviews

    Within the past few years, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) or drones manufacture and purchase. It is expected to proliferate further, penetrating into every stream of life, thus making its usage inevitable. The UAV’s major components are its physical hardware and programming software, which controls its navigation or performs various tasks based on the field of concern. The drone manufacturers launch the controlling app for the drones in mobile app stores. A few drone manufacturers also release development kits to aid drone enthusiasts in developing customized or more creative apps. Thus, the app stores are also expected to be flooded with drone-related apps in the near future. With various active research and studies being carried out in UAV’s hardware field, no effort is dedicated to studying/researching the software side of UAV. Towards this end, a large-scale empirical study of UAV or drone-related apps of the Google Play Store Platform is conducted. The study consisted of 1,825 UAV mobile apps, across twenty-five categories, with 162,250 reviews. Some of the notable findings of the thesis are (a) There are 27 major types of issues the drone app users complain about, (b) The top four complaints observed are Functional Error (27.9%), Device Compatibility (16.8%), Cost (16.2%) and Connection/Sync (15.6%), (c) The top four issues for which the UAV manufactures or Drone app developers provide feedback to user complaints are Functional Error (40.9%), Cost (33.3%), Device Compatibility (23.1%) and ConnectionSync (16%), (d) Developers respond to the most frequently occurring complaints rather than the most negatively impacting ones
