The introduction of an holistic design approach through a teaching company scheme
Traditional design approaches separate the various functions of design such as material selection, performance modelling and tolerance specification into discrete entities. Whilst this allows more focused methods to be used at each stage, areas of conflict or benefit may be overlooked, and the designer is left to bring the loose ends together. This paper looks at a synthesis approach that draws upon a number of current design themes. The design process is considered along with various aspects such as product development, design-for-`X' methodologies and material selection. The need for the preservation of design knowledge and reasoning, the so called wh-? questions, within the process are considered along with various models of the design process. The paper draws these various aspects together to form a more holistic approach to design. The application of this technique within the Teaching Company Scheme is briefly discussed
Optimization for L1-Norm Error Fitting via Data Aggregation
We propose a data aggregation-based algorithm with monotonic convergence to a
global optimum for a generalized version of the L1-norm error fitting model
with an assumption of the fitting function. The proposed algorithm generalizes
the recent algorithm in the literature, aggregate and iterative disaggregate
(AID), which selectively solves three specific L1-norm error fitting problems.
With the proposed algorithm, any L1-norm error fitting model can be solved
optimally if it follows the form of the L1-norm error fitting problem and if
the fitting function satisfies the assumption. The proposed algorithm can also
solve multi-dimensional fitting problems with arbitrary constraints on the
fitting coefficients matrix. The generalized problem includes popular models
such as regression and the orthogonal Procrustes problem. The results of the
computational experiment show that the proposed algorithms are faster than the
state-of-the-art benchmarks for L1-norm regression subset selection and L1-norm
regression over a sphere. Further, the relative performance of the proposed
algorithm improves as data size increases
Interactive rhythms across species: The evolutionary biology of animal chorusing and turn-taking
The study of human language is progressively moving toward comparative and interactive frameworks, extending the concept of turn‐taking to animal communication. While such an endeavor will help us understand the interactive origins of language, any theoretical account for cross‐species turn‐taking should consider three key points. First, animal turn‐taking must incorporate biological studies on animal chorusing, namely how different species coordinate their signals over time. Second, while concepts employed in human communication and turn‐taking, such as intentionality, are still debated in animal behavior, lower level mechanisms with clear neurobiological bases can explain much of animal interactive behavior. Third, social behavior, interactivity, and cooperation can be orthogonal, and the alternation of animal signals need not be cooperative. Considering turn‐taking a subset of chorusing in the rhythmic dimension may avoid overinterpretation and enhance the comparability of future empirical work

Modelling the Effects of Friction on Tool-Chip Interface Temperature During Orthogonal Cutting of Al6061-T6 Aluminium Alloy
© IEOM Society International - IEOM 2019In this work, finite element simulations based on the analytical model derived with the MATLAB software were used to establish the temperature fields within the cutting tool and tool-chip interface. The average tool-chip interface temperature model was simulated and the simulation results were compared with experimental results for validation. At a maximum cutting speed of 90 m/min, the maximum temperature obtained from the experiment was 410 oC, at same rake angle of 0o. However, the developed model predicted 490 oC under the same conditions. The higher value obtained by the model can be attributed to the negligence of heat losses to the surrounding by both convection and radiation modes, as an assumption in the formulated model. A similar trend of these results was also recorded for the case of rake angle and feed rate of 30o and 0.0635 mm/rev, respectively. It was observed that the simulation results and experimental measurements for the average tool-chip interface temperature agreed significantly.Final Published versio
