The Demand for Children in Anambra State of Nigeria: A Logit Analysis.

    Get PDF
This paper provides empirical evidence on the determinants of demand for children in Anambra State of Nigeria. To achieve this, a micro framework was adopted and cross sectional data explored. Logistics regression technique was used for the data analysis and the factors identified as strong predictors of demand for children include wife’s level of participation in decision-making, occupation, place of residence, husband’s education among others. Surprisingly, wife’s education is among the weak predictors. This supports the assumption that female education is a necessary but not sufficient condition to guarantee fertility decline. Cultural inertia may account for this, considering its adverse consequence on women’s access to productive resources and level of participation in decision-making

Spatial statistics of poultry production in Anambra state of Nigeria: A preliminary for bio-energy plant location modelling

    Get PDF
Consequent on the need to utilize bio-wastes for energy generation, a preliminary study for bio-energy plant location modelling was carried out in this work using spatial statistics technique in Anambra State of Nigeria as a case study. Spatial statistics toolbox in ArcGIS was used to generate point density map which reveal the regional patterns of biomass distribution and to generate hotspot analysis of zones of poultry production sites in the study area. The result of the study indicates that the central regions of the state is characterised with high point density poultry production sites, some of the locations with high point density poultry production values include: Ogbaru town which has the highest point density value of above 4,362,480kg of poultry droppings. This is followed by Umuchu, Onitsha, Nise, Nibo and Amawbia, with point density value that ranges from 2,210,250kg to 4,362,480kg. Several hotspots were identified in the central region of the study area, and in the South west region of the study area (where Umuodu, Ogbakuba and Ossomala were located), while the Southern region of the study area is characterized with several coldspots. The hotspots zones and high point density production sites identified in this study should serve as suitable locations for siting bio-energy plants in the study area. http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v35i4.3

The Marginalization of Women in Anambra State of Nigeria As A Risk Factor in HIV/AIDS Transmission

    Get PDF
This paper examines how different types of cultural marginalization and subservient treatment of women have become major factors in transmission of HIV/AIDS to Nigerian women with core study being on Anambra state women of Nigeria. Research findings from this study conducted at Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, Anambra State, indicated that as a result of the long standing maleness culture and patriarchal society in Anambra state, power, and authority are disproportionately held by men Subsequently, women are subjugated and relegated by men to secondary roles in the socio-cultural and economic matrix of Anambra state. The maleness syndrome, which is the epicenter of the culture, has driven women to the corners and margins of the society leading to marginalization and discrimination. This cultural inequality leads to multiple heterosexual marriage arrangements such as polygamy, surrogate husband/wife, widowhood practices, wife inheritance, and concubines. Marginalization continues to sustain women’s low status and lack of assertiveness while sustaining limited opportunities to viable economic threshold and other enabling resources. Thus women’s ability to make decisions about themselves, including their reproductive health and those of their children are inhibited by cultural taboos. In spite of the justifications of these cultural practices, this study show that they play a convergent role in aiding the transmission of HIV/AIDS among women. These components are mostly predicated by the strong traditional and cultural imperatives in procreation and patriarchal lineage. This research paper intends to highlight this problem and also provide recommendations and alternative solutions to this problem

The research work was on maintenance culture of information resources among librarians in two selected private higher institutions in Anambra State of Nigeria. Descriptive survey method was adopted for this study. A simple random technique was also used. The population of the study are Librarians that work at the two university libraries. The institutions used are Paul University Awka and Madonna University Okija libraries.  The major findings include: there are a lot of challenges facing both institutions in issues of maintenance culture, inadequate funding to carry out preservation activities in library yearly 2(33.33%), 3(25%), there is no preservation and conservation policy in our library 3(25%), lack of infrastructure facilities for preservation of resources, harsh/high environment condition, and both University Libraries lack professional staff in their library. The researchers proffer some solutions to higher institutions in Nigeria. Keyword: Maintenance culture, Information, Resources, Preservation, Conservation, Librarians and Libraries

Prioritizing Residential Land Value Determinants in Onitsha, Nigeria

This study was undertaken to analyze the various determinants of residential land values and the strength of the different factors contributing to land value variations in Onitsha, Nigeria. The factor analysis and the principal component techniques were applied in the ana lysis of spatial variations and the relationship between 31 identifiable factors influencing resident ia l land values in Onitsha, Anambra State of Nigeria. By using regression analysis, t he 13 main factors shaping land values in Onitsha were established, prioritized and ranked as accessibility, neighborhood quality, land t itle, zoning regu lations, transportation, rent, improvement tax, environmental quality, view of amenities, travel time to the city centre and irrevoca ble power of attorney

Computed Tomography Dose for Adult Head Scan in Anambra State of Nigeria

Background: Computed tomography is associated with relatively high radiation doses and could cause serious health risks. Globally, it is reported that many physicians do not to have adequate knowledge about CT dose. Furthermore, although dose records are available from developed countries, there is a paucity of literature in Nigeria. Dose outputs in our locality are also scarce in the literature. Objective: To review adult head CT dose in the four largest centres in Anambra State. Methodology: A 6-month retrospective retrieval of dose summary from the control console. Digital folders of subjects ≥ 18 years were sampled purposively and sequentially, out of the 2015 population of CT examinations. The CTDIvol and DLP for each case were recorded in a pro forma. The mean dose in each centre as well as the combined mean for all centres were calculated. The results were compared with the recommendations of the European Commission and similar studies from Nigeria. Results: The digital folders of 200 subjects made up of 104 (52.0 %) males and 96 (48.0%) females with an age range of 18 – 93 years were involved in the study. Cranium (n = 164; 82 %) dominated the CT requests. The mean CTDIvol and DLP in the four centres was 58 mGy and 1112 mGy.cm. The mean CTDIvol (73 mGy) and DLP (1613 mGy-cm) in one of the centres was extreme. When excluded, the mean CTDIvol and DLP for the remaining three centres were 52 mGy and 945 mGy.cm, respectively. Conclusion: Dose output in Anambra State was comparable to the recommendation of the European Commission but varied significantly from other local studies. The establishment of diagnostic reference levels for CT procedure in the locality is imperative

The study investigated the Role of Information Technology (IT) in thecreation of wealth and poverty alleviation in Nigeria. The design of the studywas a descriptive survey, carried out at Nwafor Orizu College of Education,Nsugbe in Anambra State of Nigeria. One hundred and ninety three (193)respondents formed the sample population. Questionnaire was used for thecollection of data. Mean standard deviation and analysis of variance(ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance was used for data analysis. Thefindings revealed that Information Technology (IT) is very imperative in thecreation of wealth and poverty reduction in Nigeria. Recommendations werealso made which include provision of capacity building, solar power andcreation of awareness among the communities on the use of InformationTechnology (IT), etc

Triploid was induced in African Catfish (Heterobranchus longifilis) by cold shocking activated eggs at 5 degree C for forty minutes starting 3-4 minutes after fertilization. Triploidy was confirmed from mitotic chromosomes prepared from embryo which showed 100% triploidy in the cold shocking treatment and 100% diploidy in the control treatmen
