An Improved Observation Model for Super-Resolution under Affine Motion
Super-resolution (SR) techniques make use of subpixel shifts between frames
in an image sequence to yield higher-resolution images. We propose an original
observation model devoted to the case of non isometric inter-frame motion as
required, for instance, in the context of airborne imaging sensors. First, we
describe how the main observation models used in the SR literature deal with
motion, and we explain why they are not suited for non isometric motion. Then,
we propose an extension of the observation model by Elad and Feuer adapted to
affine motion. This model is based on a decomposition of affine transforms into
successive shear transforms, each one efficiently implemented by row-by-row or
column-by-column 1-D affine transforms.
We demonstrate on synthetic and real sequences that our observation model
incorporated in a SR reconstruction technique leads to better results in the
case of variable scale motions and it provides equivalent results in the case
of isometric motions
An Efficient Algorithm for Video Super-Resolution Based On a Sequential Model
In this work, we propose a novel procedure for video super-resolution, that
is the recovery of a sequence of high-resolution images from its low-resolution
counterpart. Our approach is based on a "sequential" model (i.e., each
high-resolution frame is supposed to be a displaced version of the preceding
one) and considers the use of sparsity-enforcing priors. Both the recovery of
the high-resolution images and the motion fields relating them is tackled. This
leads to a large-dimensional, non-convex and non-smooth problem. We propose an
algorithmic framework to address the latter. Our approach relies on fast
gradient evaluation methods and modern optimization techniques for
non-differentiable/non-convex problems. Unlike some other previous works, we
show that there exists a provably-convergent method with a complexity linear in
the problem dimensions. We assess the proposed optimization method on {several
video benchmarks and emphasize its good performance with respect to the state
of the art.}Comment: 37 pages, SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences, 201

Filter-generating system of Zernike polynomials
This work proposes a new approach to find the generating function (GF) of the Zernike polynomials in two dimensional form. Combining the methods of GFs and discrete-time systems, we can develop two dimensional digital systems for systematic generation of entire orders of Zernike polynomials. We establish two different formulas for the GF of the radial Zernike polynomials based on both the degree and the azimuthal order of the radial polynomials. In this paper, we use four terms recurrence relation instead of the ordinary three terms recursion to calculate the radial Zernike polynomials and their GFs using unilateral 2D Z-transform. A spatio-temporal implementation scheme is developed for generation of the radial Zernike polynomials. The case study shows a reliable way to evaluate Zernike polynomials with arbitrary degrees and azimuthal orders
A New Method for Superresolution Image Reconstruction Based on Surveying Adjustment
A new method for superresolution image reconstruction based on surveying adjustment method is described in this paper. The main idea of such new method is that a sequence of low-resolution images are taken firstly as observations, and then observation equations are established for the superresolution image reconstruction. The gray function of the object surface can be found by using surveying adjustment method from the observation equations. High-resolution pixel value of the corresponding area can be calculated by using the gray function. The results show that the proposed algorithm converges much faster than that of conventional superresolution image reconstruction method. By using the new method, the visual feeling of reconstructed image can be greatly improved compared to that of iterative back projection algorithm, and its peak signal-to-noise ratio can also be improved by nearly 1 dB higher than the projection onto convex sets algorithm. Furthermore, this method can successfully avoid the ill-posed problems in reconstruction process
Image enhancement techniques applied to solar feature detection
This dissertation presents the development of automatic image enhancement techniques for solar feature detection. The new method allows for detection and tracking of the evolution of filaments in solar images. Series of H-alpha full-disk images are taken in regular time intervals to observe the changes of the solar disk features. In each picture, the solar chromosphere filaments are identified for further evolution examination. The initial preprocessing step involves local thresholding to convert grayscale images into black-and-white pictures with chromosphere granularity enhanced. An alternative preprocessing method, based on image normalization and global thresholding is presented. The next step employs morphological closing operations with multi-directional linear structuring elements to extract elongated shapes in the image. After logical union of directional filtering results, the remaining noise is removed from the final outcome using morphological dilation and erosion with a circular structuring element. Experimental results show that the developed techniques can achieve excellent results in detecting large filaments and good detection rates for small filaments. The final chapter discusses proposed directions of the future research and applications to other areas of solar image processing, in particular to detection of solar flares, plages and sunspots
