    Analysis of Dynamic Memory Bandwidth Regulation in Multi-core Real-Time Systems

    One of the primary sources of unpredictability in modern multi-core embedded systems is contention over shared memory resources, such as caches, interconnects, and DRAM. Despite significant achievements in the design and analysis of multi-core systems, there is a need for a theoretical framework that can be used to reason on the worst-case behavior of real-time workload when both processors and memory resources are subject to scheduling decisions. In this paper, we focus our attention on dynamic allocation of main memory bandwidth. In particular, we study how to determine the worst-case response time of tasks spanning through a sequence of time intervals, each with a different bandwidth-to-core assignment. We show that the response time computation can be reduced to a maximization problem over assignment of memory requests to different time intervals, and we provide an efficient way to solve such problem. As a case study, we then demonstrate how our proposed analysis can be used to improve the schedulability of Integrated Modular Avionics systems in the presence of memory-intensive workload.Comment: Accepted for publication in the IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS) 2018 conferenc

    A Survey on Communication Networks for Electric System Automation

The operational and commercial demands of electric utilities require a high-performance data communication network that supports both existing functionalities and future operational requirements. In this respect, since such a communication network constitutes the core of the electric system automation applications, the design of a cost-effective and reliable network architecture is crucial. In this paper, the opportunities and challenges of a hybrid network architecture are discussed for electric system automation. More specifically, Internet based Virtual Private Networks, power line communications, satellite communications and wireless communications (wireless sensor networks, WiMAX and wireless mesh networks) are described in detail. The motivation of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the hybrid network architecture that can provide heterogeneous electric system automation application requirements. In this regard, our aim is to present a structured framework for electric utilities who plan to utilize new communication technologies for automation and hence, to make the decision making process more effective and direct.This work was supported by NEETRAC under Project #04-157

    Dynamic Memory Bandwidth Allocation for Real-Time GPU-Based SoC Platforms

    Heterogeneous SoC platforms, comprising both general purpose CPUs and accelerators such as a GPU, are becoming increasingly attractive for real-time and mixed-criticality systems to cope with the computational demand of data parallel applications. However, contention for access to shared main memory can lead to significant performance degradation on both CPU and GPU. Existing work has shown that memory bandwidth throttling is effective in protecting real-time applications from memory-intensive, best-effort ones; however, due to the inherent pessimism involved in worst-case execution time estimation, such approaches can unduly restrict the bandwidth available to best-effort applications. In this work, we propose a novel memory bandwidth allocation scheme where we dynamically monitor the progress of a real-time application and increase the bandwidth share of best-effort ones whenever it is safe to do so. Specifically, we demonstrate our approach by protecting a real-time GPU kernel from best-effort CPU tasks. Based on profiling information, we first build a worst case execution time estimation model for the GPU kernel. Using such model, we then show how to dynamically recompute on-line the maximum memory budget that can be allocated to best-effort tasks without exceeding the kernel’s assigned execution budget. We implement our proposed technique on NVIDIA embedded SoC and demonstrate its effectiveness on a variety of GPU and CPU benchmarks

    DeepPicar: A Low-cost Deep Neural Network-based Autonomous Car

    We present DeepPicar, a low-cost deep neural network based autonomous car platform. DeepPicar is a small scale replication of a real self-driving car called DAVE-2 by NVIDIA. DAVE-2 uses a deep convolutional neural network (CNN), which takes images from a front-facing camera as input and produces car steering angles as output. DeepPicar uses the same network architecture---9 layers, 27 million connections and 250K parameters---and can drive itself in real-time using a web camera and a Raspberry Pi 3 quad-core platform. Using DeepPicar, we analyze the Pi 3's computing capabilities to support end-to-end deep learning based real-time control of autonomous vehicles. We also systematically compare other contemporary embedded computing platforms using the DeepPicar's CNN-based real-time control workload. We find that all tested platforms, including the Pi 3, are capable of supporting the CNN-based real-time control, from 20 Hz up to 100 Hz, depending on hardware platform. However, we find that shared resource contention remains an important issue that must be considered in applying CNN models on shared memory based embedded computing platforms; we observe up to 11.6X execution time increase in the CNN based control loop due to shared resource contention. To protect the CNN workload, we also evaluate state-of-the-art cache partitioning and memory bandwidth throttling techniques on the Pi 3. We find that cache partitioning is ineffective, while memory bandwidth throttling is an effective solution.Comment: To be published as a conference paper at RTCSA 201

    The energy consumption from the expanding use of information and communications technology (ICT) is unsustainable with present drivers, and it will impact heavily on the future climate change. However, ICT devices have the potential to contribute signi - cantly to the reduction of CO2 emission and enhance resource e ciency in other sectors, e.g., transportation (through intelligent transportation and advanced driver assistance systems and self-driving vehicles), heating (through smart building control), and manu- facturing (through digital automation based on smart autonomous sensors). To address the energy sustainability of ICT and capture the full potential of ICT in resource e - ciency, a multidisciplinary ICT-energy community needs to be brought together cover- ing devices, microarchitectures, ultra large-scale integration (ULSI), high-performance computing (HPC), energy harvesting, energy storage, system design, embedded sys- tems, e cient electronics, static analysis, and computation.     Warp-Aware Adaptive Energy Efficiency Calibration for Multi-GPU Systems

    Massive GPU acceleration processors have been used in high-performance computing systems. The Dennard-scaling has led to power and thermal constraints limiting the performance of such systems. The demand for both increased performance and energy-efficiency is highly desired. This paper presents a multi-layer low-power optimisation method for warps and tasks parallelisms. We present a dynamic frequency regulation scheme for performance parameters in terms of load balance and load imbalance. The method monitors the energy parameters in runtime and adjusts adaptively the voltage level to ensure the performance efficiency with energy reduction. The experimental results show that the multi-layer low-power optimisation with dynamic frequency regulation can achieve 40% energy consumption reduction with only 1.6% performance degradation, thus reducing 59% maximum energy consumption. It can further save about 30% energy consumption in comparison with the single-layer energy optimisation

    A survey of techniques for reducing interference in real-time applications on multicore platforms

    This survey reviews the scientific literature on techniques for reducing interference in real-time multicore systems, focusing on the approaches proposed between 2015 and 2020. It also presents proposals that use interference reduction techniques without considering the predictability issue. The survey highlights interference sources and categorizes proposals from the perspective of the shared resource. It covers techniques for reducing contentions in main memory, cache memory, a memory bus, and the integration of interference effects into schedulability analysis.     Holistic resource allocation for multicore real-time systems

    This paper presents CaM, a holistic cache and memory bandwidth resource allocation strategy for multicore real-time systems. CaM is designed for partitioned scheduling, where tasks are mapped onto cores, and the shared cache and memory bandwidth resources are partitioned among cores to reduce resource interferences due to concurrent accesses. Based on our extension of LITMUSRT with Intel’s Cache Allocation Technology and MemGuard, we present an experimental evaluation of the relationship between the allocation of cache and memory bandwidth resources and a task’s WCET. Our resource allocation strategy exploits this relationship to map tasks onto cores, and to compute the resource allocation for each core. By grouping tasks with similar characteristics (in terms of resource demands) to the same core, it enables tasks on each core to fully utilize the assigned resources. In addition, based on the tasks’ execution time behaviors with respect to their assigned resources, we can determine a desirable allocation that maximizes schedulability under resource constraints. Extensive evaluations using real-world benchmarks show that CaM offers near optimal schedulability performance while being highly efficient, and that it substantially outperforms existing solutions
