Optical tomography: Image improvement using mixed projection of parallel and fan beam modes
Mixed parallel and fan beam projection is a technique used to increase the quality images. This research focuses on enhancing the image quality in optical tomography. Image quality can be defined by measuring the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Normalized Mean Square Error (NMSE) parameters. The findings of this research prove that by combining parallel and fan beam projection, the image quality can be increased by more than 10%in terms of its PSNR value and more than 100% in terms of its NMSE value compared to a single parallel beam
The paradigm-shift of social spambots: Evidence, theories, and tools for the arms race
Recent studies in social media spam and automation provide anecdotal
argumentation of the rise of a new generation of spambots, so-called social
spambots. Here, for the first time, we extensively study this novel phenomenon
on Twitter and we provide quantitative evidence that a paradigm-shift exists in
spambot design. First, we measure current Twitter's capabilities of detecting
the new social spambots. Later, we assess the human performance in
discriminating between genuine accounts, social spambots, and traditional
spambots. Then, we benchmark several state-of-the-art techniques proposed by
the academic literature. Results show that neither Twitter, nor humans, nor
cutting-edge applications are currently capable of accurately detecting the new
social spambots. Our results call for new approaches capable of turning the
tide in the fight against this raising phenomenon. We conclude by reviewing the
latest literature on spambots detection and we highlight an emerging common
research trend based on the analysis of collective behaviors. Insights derived
from both our extensive experimental campaign and survey shed light on the most
promising directions of research and lay the foundations for the arms race
against the novel social spambots. Finally, to foster research on this novel
phenomenon, we make publicly available to the scientific community all the

Evaluation datasets for Twitter sentiment analysis: a survey and a new dataset, the STS-Gold
Sentiment analysis over Twitter offers organisations and individuals a fast and effective way to monitor the publics' feelings towards them and their competitors. To assess the performance of sentiment analysis methods over Twitter a small set of evaluation datasets have been released in the last few years. In this paper we present an overview of eight publicly available and manually annotated evaluation datasets for Twitter sentiment analysis. Based on this review, we show that a common limitation of most of these datasets, when assessing sentiment analysis at target (entity) level, is the lack of distinctive sentiment annotations among the tweets and the entities contained in them. For example, the tweet "I love iPhone, but I hate iPad" can be annotated with a mixed sentiment label, but the entity iPhone within this tweet should be annotated with a positive sentiment label. Aiming to overcome this limitation, and to complement current evaluation datasets, we present STS-Gold, a new evaluation dataset where tweets and targets (entities) are annotated individually and therefore may present different sentiment labels. This paper also provides a comparative study of the various datasets along several dimensions including: total number of tweets, vocabulary size and sparsity. We also investigate the pair-wise correlation among these dimensions as well as their correlations to the sentiment classification performance on different datasets
