The nature and evaluation of commercial expert system building tools, revision 1
This memorandum reviews the factors that constitute an Expert System Building Tool (ESBT) and evaluates current tools in terms of these factors. Evaluation of these tools is based on their structure and their alternative forms of knowledge representation, inference mechanisms and developer end-user interfaces. Next, functional capabilities, such as diagnosis and design, are related to alternative forms of mechanization. The characteristics and capabilities of existing commercial tools are then reviewed in terms of these criteria
Unit Testing in ASPIDE
Answer Set Programming (ASP) is a declarative logic programming formalism,
which is employed nowadays in both academic and industrial real-world
applications. Although some tools for supporting the development of ASP
programs have been proposed in the last few years, the crucial task of testing
ASP programs received less attention, and is an Achilles' heel of the available
programming environments.
In this paper we present a language for specifying and running unit tests on
ASP programs. The testing language has been implemented in ASPIDE, a
comprehensive IDE for ASP, which supports the entire life-cycle of ASP
development with a collection of user-friendly graphical tools for program
composition, testing, debugging, profiling, solver execution configuration, and
output-handling.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings of the 25th Workshop on Logic

ART-Ada: An Ada-based expert system tool
The Department of Defense mandate to standardize on Ada as the language for software systems development has resulted in increased interest in making expert systems technology readily available in Ada environments. NASA's Space Station Freedom is an example of the large Ada software development projects that will require expert systems in the 1990's. Another large scale application that can benefit from Ada based expert system tool technology is the Pilot's Associate (PA) expert system project for military combat aircraft. Automated Reasoning Tool (ART) Ada, an Ada Expert system tool is described. ART-Ada allow applications of a C-based expert system tool called ART-IM to be deployed in various Ada environments. ART-Ada is being used to implement several prototype expert systems for NASA's Space Station Freedom Program and the U.S. Air Force
