A new multistage lattice vector quantization with adaptive subband thresholding for image compression

    Get PDF
Lattice vector quantization (LVQ) reduces coding complexity and computation due to its regular structure. A new multistage LVQ (MLVQ) using an adaptive subband thresholding technique is presented and applied to image compression. The technique concentrates on reducing the quantization error of the quantized vectors by "blowing out" the residual quantization errors with an LVQ scale factor. The significant coefficients of each subband are identified using an optimum adaptive thresholding scheme for each subband. A variable length coding procedure using Golomb codes is used to compress the codebook index which produces a very efficient and fast technique for entropy coding. Experimental results using the MLVQ are shown to be significantly better than JPEG 2000 and the recent VQ techniques for various test images

A Study of trellis coded quantization for image compression

    Get PDF
Trellis coded quantization has recently evolved as a powerful quantization technique in the world of lossy image compression. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the potential of trellis coded quantization in conjunction with two of the most popular image transforms today; the discrete cosine transform and the discrete wavelet trans form. Trellis coded quantization is compared with traditional scalar quantization. The 4-state and the 8-state trellis coded quantizers are compared in an attempt to come up with a quantifiable difference in their performances. The use of pdf-optimized quantizers for trellis coded quantization is also studied. Results for the simulations performed on two gray-scale images at an uncoded bit rate of 0.48 bits/pixel are presented by way of reconstructed images and the respective peak signal-to-noise ratios. It is evident from the results obtained that trellis coded quantization outperforms scalar quantization in both the discrete cosine transform and the discrete wavelet transform domains. The reconstructed images suggest that there does not seem to be any considerable gain in going from a 4-state to a 8-state trellis coded quantizer. Results also suggest that considerable gain can be had by employing pdf-optimized quantizers for trellis coded quantization instead of uniform quantizers

Application of multirate digital signal processing to image compression

With the increasing emphasis on digital communication and digital processing of images and video, image compression is drawing considerable interest as a means of reducing computer storage and communication channels bandwidth requirements. This thesis presents a method for the compression of grayscale images which is based on the multirate digital signal processing system. The input image spectrum is decomposed into octave wide subbands by critically resampling and filtering the image using separable FIR digital filters. These filters are chosen to satisfy the perfect reconstruction requirement. Simulation results on rectangularly sampled images (including a text image) are presented. Then, the algorithm is applied to the hexagonally resampled images and the results show a slight increase in the compression efficiency. Comparing the results against the standard (JPEG), indicate that this method does not have the blocking effect of JPEG and it preserves the edges even in the presence of high noise level

Image coding using wavelet transform and adaptive block truncation coding

This thesis presents a new image coding using wavelet transform and adaptive block truncation coding. Images are first pre-processed by the wavelet transform and then coded by the adaptive block truncation coding. Algorithms for both monochrome and color images are proposed and experimentally studied. The adaptive block truncation coding is also modified to achieve better performance. For coding monochrome images at the bit-rate region between 0.8 to 1.2 bits/pixel, the performance of the new coding is comparable to the ones of subband codings and other image codings using the wavelet transform; however, the new coding offers less computational load. The new coding also gives a good reconstruction of a color image at the bit-rate of 1.0 bit/pixel. The comparison between the new coding and the original adaptive block truncation coding is also given. The discussion on effects of a filter and a number of decomposition levels used for an implementation of the wavelet transform is included in this thesis, as well
