    Among the many technologies competing for the Internet of Things (IoT), one of the most promising and fast-growing technologies in this landscape is the Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN). Coverage of LoRa, one of the main IoT LPWAN technologies, has previously been studied for outdoor environments. However, this article focuses on end-to-end propagation in an outdoor–indoor scenario. This article will investigate how the reported and documented outdoor metrics are interpreted for an indoor environment. Furthermore, to facilitate network planning and coverage prediction, a novel hybrid propagation estimation method has been developed and examined. This hybrid model is comprised of an artificial neural network (ANN) and an optimized Multi-Wall Model (MWM). Subsequently, real-world measurements were collected and compared against different propagation models. For benchmarking, log-distance and COST231 models were used due to their simplicity. It was observed and concluded that: (a) the propagation of the LoRa Wide-Area Network (LoRaWAN) is limited to a much shorter range in this investigated environment compared with outdoor reports; (b) log-distance and COST231 models do not yield an accurate estimate of propagation characteristics for outdoor–indoor scenarios; (c) this lack of accuracy can be addressed by adjusting the COST231 model, to account for the outdoor propagation; (d) a feedforward neural network combined with a COST231 model improves the accuracy of the predictions. This work demonstrates practical results and provides an insight into the LoRaWAN’s propagation in similar scenarios. This could facilitate network planning for outdoor–indoor environments

    Location-free Spectrum Cartography

    Spectrum cartography constructs maps of metrics such as channel gain or received signal power across a geographic area of interest using spatially distributed sensor measurements. Applications of these maps include network planning, interference coordination, power control, localization, and cognitive radios to name a few. Since existing spectrum cartography techniques require accurate estimates of the sensor locations, their performance is drastically impaired by multipath affecting the positioning pilot signals, as occurs in indoor or dense urban scenarios. To overcome such a limitation, this paper introduces a novel paradigm for spectrum cartography, where estimation of spectral maps relies on features of these positioning signals rather than on location estimates. Specific learning algorithms are built upon this approach and offer a markedly improved estimation performance than existing approaches relying on localization, as demonstrated by simulation studies in indoor scenarios.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 1 table.     Channel Gain Cartography via Mixture of Experts

    In order to estimate the channel gain (CG) between the locations of an arbitrary transceiver pair across a geographic area of interest, CG maps can be constructed from spatially distributed sensor measurements. Most approaches to build such spectrum maps are location-based, meaning that the input variable to the estimating function is a pair of spatial locations. The performance of such maps depends critically on the ability of the sensors to determine their positions, which may be drastically impaired if the positioning pilot signals are affected by multi-path channels. An alternative location-free approach was recently proposed for spectrum power maps, where the input variable to the maps consists of features extracted from the positioning signals, instead of location estimates. The location-based and the location-free approaches have complementary merits. In this work, apart from adapting the location-free features for the CG maps, a method that can combine both approaches is proposed in a mixture-of-experts framework.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted in Globecom 202

    Explainable machine learning for LoRaWAN link budget analysis and modeling

    This article explores the convergence of artificial intelligence and its challenges for precise planning of LoRa networks. It examines machine learning algorithms in conjunction with empirically collected data to develop an effective propagation model for LoRaWAN. We propose decoupling feature extraction and regression analysis, which facilitates training data requirements. In our comparative analysis, decision-tree-based gradient boosting achieved the lowest root-mean-squared error of 5.53 dBm. Another advantage of this model is its interpretability, which is exploited to qualitatively observe the governing propagation mechanisms. This approach provides a unique opportunity to practically understand the dependence of signal strength on other variables. The analysis revealed a 1.5 dBm sensitivity improvement as the LoR’s spreading factor changed from 7 to 12. The impact of clutter was revealed to be highly non-linear, with high attenuations as clutter increased until a certain point, after which it became ineffective. The outcome of this work leads to a more accurate estimation and a better understanding of the LoRa’s propagation. Consequently, mitigating the challenges associated with large-scale and dense LoRaWAN deployments, enabling improved link budget analysis, interference management, quality of service, scalability, and energy efficiency of Internet of Things networks.</p

    In spectrum cartography, also known as radio map estimation, one constructs maps that provide the value of a given channel metric such as as the received power, power spectral density (PSD), electromagnetic absorption, or channel-gain for every spatial location in the geographic area of interest. The main idea is to deploy sensors and measure the target channel metric at a set of locations and interpolate or extrapolate the measurements. Radio maps nd a myriad of applications in wireless communications such as network planning, interference coordination, power control, spectrum management, resource allocation, handoff optimization, dynamic spectrum access, and cognitive radio.
