    A developmental approach to robotic pointing via human-robot interaction

    The ability of pointing is recognised as an essential skill of a robot in its communication and social interaction. This paper introduces a developmental learning approach to robotic pointing, by exploiting the interactions between a human and a robot. The approach is inspired through observing the process of human infant development. It works by first applying a reinforcement learning algorithm to guide the robot to create attempt movements towards a salient object that is out of the robot's initial reachable space. Through such movements, a human demonstrator is able to understand the robot desires to touch the target and consequently, to assist the robot to eventually reach the object successfully. The human-robot interaction helps establish the understanding of pointing gestures in the perception of both the human and the robot. From this, the robot can collect the successful pointing gestures in an effort to learn how to interact with humans. Developmental constraints are utilised to drive the entire learning procedure. The work is supported by experimental evaluation, demonstrating that the proposed approach can lead the robot to gradually gain the desirable pointing ability. It also allows that the resulting robot system exhibits similar developmental progress and features as with human infants

    Evolving fuzzy and neuro-fuzzy approaches in clustering, regression, identification, and classification: A Survey

    Major assumptions in computational intelligence and machine learning consist of the availability of a historical dataset for model development, and that the resulting model will, to some extent, handle similar instances during its online operation. However, in many real world applications, these assumptions may not hold as the amount of previously available data may be insufficient to represent the underlying system, and the environment and the system may change over time. As the amount of data increases, it is no longer feasible to process data efficiently using iterative algorithms, which typically require multiple passes over the same portions of data. Evolving modeling from data streams has emerged as a framework to address these issues properly by self-adaptation, single-pass learning steps and evolution as well as contraction of model components on demand and on the fly. This survey focuses on evolving fuzzy rule-based models and neuro-fuzzy networks for clustering, classification and regression and system identification in online, real-time environments where learning and model development should be performed incrementally.     Bandwidth Allocation Mechanism based on Users' Web Usage Patterns for Campus Networks

    Managing the bandwidth in campus networks becomes a challenge in recent years. The limited bandwidth resource and continuous growth of users make the IT managers think on the strategies concerning bandwidth allocation. This paper introduces a mechanism for allocating bandwidth based on the users’ web usage patterns. The main purpose is to set a higher bandwidth to the users who are inclined to browsing educational websites compared to those who are not. In attaining this proposed technique, some stages need to be done. These are the preprocessing of the weblogs, class labeling of the dataset, computation of the feature subspaces, training for the development of the ANN for LDA/GSVD algorithm, visualization, and bandwidth allocation. The proposed method was applied to real weblogs from university’s proxy servers. The results indicate that the proposed method is useful in classifying those users who used the internet in an educational way and those who are not. Thus, the developed ANN for LDA/GSVD algorithm outperformed the existing algorithm up to 50% which indicates that this approach is efficient. Further, based on the results, few users browsed educational contents. Through this mechanism, users will be encouraged to use the internet for educational purposes. Moreover, IT managers can make better plans to optimize the distribution of bandwidth

    SATAY: A Streaming Architecture Toolflow for Accelerating YOLO Models on FPGA Devices

    AI has led to significant advancements in computer vision and image processing tasks, enabling a wide range of applications in real-life scenarios, from autonomous vehicles to medical imaging. Many of those applications require efficient object detection algorithms and complementary real-time, low latency hardware to perform inference of these algorithms. The YOLO family of models is considered the most efficient for object detection, having only a single model pass. Despite this, the complexity and size of YOLO models can be too computationally demanding for current edge-based platforms. To address this, we present SATAY: a Streaming Architecture Toolflow for Accelerating YOLO. This work tackles the challenges of deploying stateof-the-art object detection models onto FPGA devices for ultralow latency applications, enabling real-time, edge-based object detection. We employ a streaming architecture design for our YOLO accelerators, implementing the complete model on-chip in a deeply pipelined fashion. These accelerators are generated using an automated toolflow, and can target a range of suitable FPGA devices. We introduce novel hardware components to support the operations of YOLO models in a dataflow manner, and off-chip memory buffering to address the limited on-chip memory resources. Our toolflow is able to generate accelerator designs which demonstrate competitive performance and energy characteristics to GPU devices, and which outperform current state-of-the-art FPGA accelerators
