Closed-loop autonomous docking system
An autonomous docking system is provided which produces commands for the steering and propulsion system of a chase vehicle used in the docking of that chase vehicle with a target vehicle. The docking system comprises a passive optical target affixed to the target vehicle and comprising three reflective areas including a central area mounted on a short post, and tracking sensor and process controller apparatus carried by the chase vehicle. The latter apparatus comprises a laser diode array for illuminating the target so as to cause light to be reflected from the reflective areas of the target; a sensor for detecting the light reflected from the target and for producing an electrical output signal in accordance with an image of the reflected light; a signal processor for processing the electrical output signal in accordance with an image of the reflected light; a signal processor for processing the electrical output signal and for producing, based thereon, output signals relating to the relative range, roll, pitch, yaw, azimuth, and elevation of the chase and target vehicles; and a docking process controller, responsive to the output signals produced by the signal processor, for producing command signals for controlling the steering and propulsion system of the chase vehicle
Performance analysis of slotted fiber-optic code-division multiple-access (CDMA) packet networks
This paper examines code-division multiple-access (CDMA) techniques used in slotted fiber-optic packet networks. Since the inherent properties and signal processing of the conventional communication channels are different from those of the fiber-optic channels, new code sequences must be constructed for fiber-optic applications. The goal of our research is to analyze the performance of fiber-optic CDMA packet networks using code sequences with given orthogonality properties. © 1997 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Space Station communications and tracking systems modeling and RF link simulation
In this final report, the effort spent on Space Station Communications and Tracking System Modeling and RF Link Simulation is described in detail. The effort is mainly divided into three parts: frequency division multiple access (FDMA) system simulation modeling and software implementation; a study on design and evaluation of a functional computerized RF link simulation/analysis system for Space Station; and a study on design and evaluation of simulation system architecture. This report documents the results of these studies. In addition, a separate User's Manual on Space Communications Simulation System (SCSS) (Version 1) documents the software developed for the Space Station FDMA communications system simulation. The final report, SCSS user's manual, and the software located in the NASA JSC system analysis division's VAX 750 computer together serve as the deliverables from LinCom for this project effort

Fully-photonic digital radio over fibre for future super-broadband access network applications
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityIn this thesis a Fully-Photonic DRoF (FP-DRoF) system is proposed for deploying of future super-broadband access networks. Digital Radio over Fibre (DRoF) is more independent of the fibre network impairments and the length of fibre than the ARoF link. In order for fully optical deployment of the signal conversion techniques in the FP-DRoF architecture, two key components an Analogue-to-Digital Converter (ADC) and a Digital-to-Analogue Converter (DAC)) for data conversion are designed and their performance are investigated whereas the physical functionality is evaluated. The system simulation results of the proposed pipelined Photonic ADC (PADC) show that the PADC has 10 GHz bandwidth around 60 GHz of sampling rate. Furthermore, by
changing the bandwidth of the optical bandpass filter, switching to another band of sampling frequency provides optimised performance condition of the PADC. The PADC has low changes on the Effective Number of Bit (ENOB) response versus analogue RF input from 1 GHz up to 22 GHz for 60 GHz sampling frequency. The proposed 8-Bit pipelined PADC performance in terms of ENOB is evaluated at 60 Gigasample/s which is about 4.1. Recently, different methods have been reported by researchers to implement Photonic DACs
(PDACs), but their aim was to convert digital electrical signals to the corresponding analogue signal by assisting the optical techniques. In this thesis, a Binary Weighted PDAC (BW-PDAC) is proposed. In this BW-PDAC, optical digital signals are fully optically converted to an analogue signal. The spurious free dynamic range at the output of the PDAC in a back-to-back deployment of the PADC and the PDAC was 26.6 dBc. For further improvement in the system performance, a 3R (Retiming, Reshaping and Reamplifying) regeneration system is proposed in this thesis. Simulation results show that for an ultrashort RZ pulse with a 5% duty cycle at 65 Gbit/s using the proposed 3R regeneration system on a link reduces rms timing jitter by 90% while the regenerated pulse eye opening height is improved by 65%. Finally, in this thesis the proposed FP-DRoF functionality is evaluated whereas its performance is investigated through a dedicated and shared fibre links. The simulation results show (in the case of low level signal to noise ratio, in comparison with ARoF through
a dedicated fibre link) that the FP-DRoF has better BER performance than the ARoF in the order of 10-20. Furthermore, in order to realize a BER about 10-25 for the ARoF, the power penalty is about 4 dBm higher than the FP-DRoF link. The simulation results demonstrate that by considering 0.2 dB/km attenuation of a standard single mode fibre, the dedicated fibre length for the FP-DRoF link can be increased to about 20 km more than the ARoF link. Moreover, for performance assessment of the proposed FP-DRoF in a shared fibre link, the BER of the FP-DRoF link is about 10-10 magnitude less than the ARoF link for -19 dBm launched power into the fibre and the power penalty of the ARoF system is 10 dBm more than the FP-DRoF link. It is significant to increase the fibre link’s length of the FP-DRoF access network using common infrastructure. In addition, the simulation results are demonstrated that the FP-DRoF with non-uniform Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is more robust against four wave mixing impairment than the conventional WDM technique with uniform wavelength allocation and has better performance in terms of BER. It is clearly verified that the lunched power penalty at CS for DRoF link with uniform WDM techniques is about 2 dB higher than non-uniform WDM technique. Furthermore, uniform WDM method requires more bandwidth than non-uniform scheme which depends on the total number of channels and channels spacing

Underwater Optical Wireless Audio Transceiver
Scuba diving carries risks that can endanger lives. Many of these risks are preventable. However, an underwater communication system can increase a diver’s safety. Along with providing safety, an underwater communication device can enhance the scuba diver’s enjoyment.
A low cost underwater optical wireless audio transceiver is designed. The project consists of the off-the-shelf parts that uses a microphone and speaker to transmit and receive sound. The project uses the concepts of visible light communications and pulse width modulation to transmit and receive sound. Although sound is commonly transmitted through ultrasound methods, visible light communications has several advantages. Visible light communications have higher bandwidth capability, suffer no electromagnetic interference, and travel at the speed of light. It also has its limitations including short ranges and line of sight. Fortunately, there is a small window in the blue-green region that is not heavily absorbed by water.
The final prototype of the project is non-functional. However, there are possible fixes that could improve the project’s performance such as higher powered LEDs and collimating lens to focus the light to the receiver
Fast Decoder for Overloaded Uniquely Decodable Synchronous Optical CDMA
In this paper, we propose a fast decoder algorithm for uniquely decodable
(errorless) code sets for overloaded synchronous optical code-division
multiple-access (O-CDMA) systems. The proposed decoder is designed in a such a
way that the users can uniquely recover the information bits with a very simple
decoder, which uses only a few comparisons. Compared to maximum-likelihood (ML)
decoder, which has a high computational complexity for even moderate code
lengths, the proposed decoder has much lower computational complexity.
Simulation results in terms of bit error rate (BER) demonstrate that the
performance of the proposed decoder for a given BER requires only 1-2 dB higher
signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than the ML decoder.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1806.0395
A New Algorithm for Supernova Neutrino Transport and Some Applications
We have developed an implicit, multi-group, time-dependent, spherical
neutrino transport code based on the Feautrier variables, the tangent-ray
method, and accelerated iteration. The code achieves high
angular resolution, is good to O(), is equivalent to a Boltzmann solver
(without gravitational redshifts), and solves the transport equation at all
optical depths with precision. In this paper, we present our formulation of the
relevant numerics and microphysics and explore protoneutron star atmospheres
for snapshot post-bounce models. Our major focus is on spectra, neutrino-matter
heating rates, Eddington factors, angular distributions, and phase-space
occupancies. In addition, we investigate the influence on neutrino spectra and
heating of final-state electron blocking, stimulated absorption, velocity terms
in the transport equation, neutrino-nucleon scattering asymmetry, and weak
magnetism and recoil effects. Furthermore, we compare the emergent spectra and
heating rates obtained using full transport with those obtained using
representative flux-limited transport formulations to gauge their accuracy and
viability. Finally, we derive useful formulae for the neutrino source strength
due to nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung and determine bremsstrahlung's influence
on the emergent and neutrino spectra.Comment: 58 pages, single-spaced LaTeX, 23 figures, revised title, also
