Event-driven Adaptation in COP
Context-Oriented Programming languages provide us with primitive constructs
to adapt program behaviour depending on the evolution of their operational
environment, namely the context. In previous work we proposed ML_CoDa, a
context-oriented language with two-components: a declarative constituent for
programming the context and a functional one for computing. This paper
describes an extension of ML_CoDa to deal with adaptation to unpredictable

A Modular Logic Approach for Expressing Web Services in XML Applying Dynamic Rules in XML
RuleML is considered to be a markup language for the semantic web. It allows the enrichment of web ontologies by adding definitions of derived concepts and it enhances interoperability among different systems and tools by publishing rules in an XML format. Moreover the in-creasing demand for interfaces that enhance information sharing has given rise to XML doc-uments that include embedded calls to web services. In this paper we propose a variation of RuleML that is based on modular logic programming. Our approach is based in a two level architecture. In the first level a modular logic language, called M-log, is presented. This lan-guage encompasses several mechanisms for invoking web services. In the second level we ex-ploit the semantics of M-log to present a variation of RuleML with rich modeling capabilities. Programming in logic without logic programming
In previous work, we proposed a logic-based framework in which computation is
the execution of actions in an attempt to make reactive rules of the form if
antecedent then consequent true in a canonical model of a logic program
determined by an initial state, sequence of events, and the resulting sequence
of subsequent states. In this model-theoretic semantics, reactive rules are the
driving force, and logic programs play only a supporting role.
In the canonical model, states, actions and other events are represented with
timestamps. But in the operational semantics, for the sake of efficiency,
timestamps are omitted and only the current state is maintained. State
transitions are performed reactively by executing actions to make the
consequents of rules true whenever the antecedents become true. This
operational semantics is sound, but incomplete. It cannot make reactive rules
true by preventing their antecedents from becoming true, or by proactively
making their consequents true before their antecedents become true.
In this paper, we characterize the notion of reactive model, and prove that
the operational semantics can generate all and only such models. In order to
focus on the main issues, we omit the logic programming component of the

CREOLE: a Universal Language for Creating, Requesting, Updating and Deleting Resources
In the context of Service-Oriented Computing, applications can be developed
following the REST (Representation State Transfer) architectural style. This
style corresponds to a resource-oriented model, where resources are manipulated
via CRUD (Create, Request, Update, Delete) interfaces. The diversity of CRUD
languages due to the absence of a standard leads to composition problems
related to adaptation, integration and coordination of services. To overcome
these problems, we propose a pivot architecture built around a universal
language to manipulate resources, called CREOLE, a CRUD Language for Resource
Edition. In this architecture, scripts written in existing CRUD languages, like
SQL, are compiled into Creole and then executed over different CRUD interfaces.
After stating the requirements for a universal language for manipulating
resources, we formally describe the language and informally motivate its
definition with respect to the requirements. We then concretely show how the
architecture solves adaptation, integration and coordination problems in the
case of photo management in Flickr and Picasa, two well-known service-oriented

State-of-the-art on evolution and reactivity
This report starts by, in Chapter 1, outlining aspects of querying and updating resources on
the Web and on the Semantic Web, including the development of query and update languages
to be carried out within the Rewerse project.
From this outline, it becomes clear that several existing research areas and topics are of
interest for this work in Rewerse. In the remainder of this report we further present state of
the art surveys in a selection of such areas and topics. More precisely: in Chapter 2 we give
an overview of logics for reasoning about state change and updates; Chapter 3 is devoted to briefly describing existing update languages for the Web, and also for updating logic programs;
in Chapter 4 event-condition-action rules, both in the context of active database systems and
in the context of semistructured data, are surveyed; in Chapter 5 we give an overview of some relevant rule-based agents frameworks
