    Pavement testing by integrated geophysical methods: Feasibility, resolution and diagnostic potential

    This work is focused on the assessment of the diagnostic potential of several geophysical methods when applied to the investigation of a rigid airport pavement. The potential and limit of each technique are evaluated as well as the added value deriving from their integration. Firstly, we reconstruct a high-resolution image of the pavement by a large electromagnetic and georadar screening. An advanced processing of georadar data, implemented through the picking of the arrival times of reflections for each profile, provides a quantitative estimation of the deviation between the design and the as-built thickness of layers. Additionally, electrical tomography has been applied to unequivocally identify the anomalous zones, where higher values of resistivity would be associated to porous zones that are prone to degradation and failure. The seismic tomographic survey had the additional purpose to recover the mechanical properties of the pavement in terms of both P- and S-waves and consequently of elastic constants (Poisson's ratio), whose values were consistent with those recovered in literature. The anomalies detected by each technique are consistent in their indications and they can be correlated to failure phenomena occurring at layer interfaces within the pavement structure or to unexpected variations of the layer thicknesses. The cost-effective geophysical campaign has validated the four-layered system deduced from the original design and has been used to reconstruct a high-resolution map of the pavement in order to discriminate fractures, crack-prone areas or areas where the as-built differs from the original design

    Parametric Macromodels of Digital I/O Ports

    This paper addresses the development of macromodels for input and output ports of a digital device. The proposed macromodels consist of parametric representations that can be obtained from port transient waveforms at the device ports via a well established procedure. The models are implementable as SPICE subcircuits and their accuracy and efficiency are verified by applying the approach to the characterization of transistor-level models of commercial devices

    Vision and Learning for Deliberative Monocular Cluttered Flight

    Cameras provide a rich source of information while being passive, cheap and lightweight for small and medium Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). In this work we present the first implementation of receding horizon control, which is widely used in ground vehicles, with monocular vision as the only sensing mode for autonomous UAV flight in dense clutter. We make it feasible on UAVs via a number of contributions: novel coupling of perception and control via relevant and diverse, multiple interpretations of the scene around the robot, leveraging recent advances in machine learning to showcase anytime budgeted cost-sensitive feature selection, and fast non-linear regression for monocular depth prediction. We empirically demonstrate the efficacy of our novel pipeline via real world experiments of more than 2 kms through dense trees with a quadrotor built from off-the-shelf parts. Moreover our pipeline is designed to combine information from other modalities like stereo and lidar as well if available

    Estimating prognosis in patients with acute myocardial infarction using personalized computational heart models

    Biomechanical computational models have potential prognostic utility in patients after an acute ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). In a proof-of-concept study, we defined two groups (1) an acute STEMI group (n = 6, 83% male, age 54 ± 12 years) complicated by left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction; (2) an age- and sex- matched hyper-control group (n = 6, 83% male, age 46 ± 14 years), no prior history of cardiovascular disease and normal systolic blood pressure (SBP < 130 mmHg). Cardiac MRI was performed in the patients (2 days & 6 months post-STEMI) and the volunteers, and biomechanical heart models were synthesized for each subject. The candidate parameters included normalized active tension (ATnorm) and active tension at the resting sarcomere length (Treq, reflecting required contractility). Myocardial contractility was inversely determined from personalized heart models by matching CMR-imaged LV dynamics. Compared with controls, patients with recent STEMI exhibited increased LV wall active tension when normalized by SBP. We observed a linear relationship between Treq 2 days post-MI and global longitudinal strain 6 months later (r = 0.86; p = 0.03). Treq may be associated with changes in LV function in the longer term in STEMI patients complicated by LV dysfunction. Further studies seem warranted

    A practical degradation based method to predict long-term moisture incursion and colour change in high power LEDs

    The effect of relative humidity on LEDs and how the moisture incursion is associated to the color shift is studied. This paper proposes a different approach to describe the lumen degradation of LEDs due to the long-term effects of humidity. Using the lumen degradation data of different types of LEDs under varying conditions of relative humidity, a humidity based degradation model (HBDM) is developed. A practical estimation method from the degradation behaviour is proposed to quantitatively gauge the effect of moisture incursion by means of a humidity index. This index demonstrates a high correlation with the color shift indicated by the LED's yellow to blue output intensity ratio. Physical analyses of the LEDs provide a qualitative validation of the model, which provides good accuracy with longer periods of moisture exposure. The results demonstrate that the HBDM is an effective indicator to predict the extent of the long-term impact of humidity and associated relative color shift

    Methods of resistance estimation in permanent magnet synchronous motors for real-time thermal management

    Real-time thermal management of electrical ma- chines relies on sufficiently accurate indicators of internal tem- perature. One indicator of temperature in a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is the stator winding resistance. Detection of PMSM winding resistance in the literature has been made on machines with relatively high resistances, where the resistive voltage vector is significant under load. This paper describes two techniques which can be applied to detect the winding resistance, through ‘Fixed Angle’ and ‘Fixed Mag- nitude’ current injection. Two further methods are described which discriminate injected current and voltages from motoring currents and voltages: ‘Unipolar’ and ‘Bipolar’ separation. These enable the resistance to be determined, and hence the winding temperature in permanent-magnet machines. These methods can be applied under load, and in a manner that does not disturb motor torque or speed. The method distinguishes between changes in the electro-motive force (EMF) constant and the resistive voltage.
