An Expert View on the Role of Complementary Assets for the Adoption of Smart Home Platforms
Smart home (SH) products and services aim to enhance the comfort, convenience, security, entertainment, health, education and communication of tenants and their guests enabled by information technology platforms. Despite ongoing waves of enthusiasm, the SH market has remained a niche for more than three decades. At the same time, recent forecast expect the market to grow at high rates in the upcoming years as various global players, like Google, Apple, AT&T, Cisco and Samsung, are lining up with own SH platform initiatives. Accounting for the multi-sidedness of the market, we employ a platform ecosystem perspective to investigate the role of complementary assets for SH adoption by consumers and firms. Based on interviews with 25 experts from 22 companies, our qualitative content analysis reveals and prioritizes complementary goods, sales channels, brand image, expertise, support infrastructure, operational footprint and financial resources as critical complementary assets. Further, we provide managerial implications for platform sponsors regarding the affiliation with complementary suppliers, the legitimacy of sponsorship, platform openness as well as on platform envelopment
Platform Openness: A Systematic Literature Review and Avenues for Future Research
Open platforms such as Facebook or Android have stimulated innovation and competition across industries. Information systems literature has analyzed platforms from a variety of perspectives. The aim of this paper is to synthesize and integrate extant interdisciplinary research on the concept of platform openness. Towards this end, we conducted a literature review and analyzed the results with deductive and inductive coding approaches. We identified five distinct themes: measurement frameworks, implementation mechanisms, drivers for opening and closing platforms, trade-offs in designing openness, and the impact of changing openness on ecosystems. We propose three avenues for future research: finding the optimal degree of platform openness, integrating perspectives on accessibility and transparency, and analyzing the influence of openness and other factors with configurational theories. This paper contributes to research on platforms by laying out the main themes and perspectives in the research stream of platform openness and by identifying areas for future research
The Concept of a Smart Action â Results from Analyzing Information Systems Literature
In recent years, the term \u27smartness\u27 has entered widespread use in research and daily life. It has emerged with various applications of the Internet of Things, such as smart homes and smart factories. However, rapid technological development and careless use of the term mean that, in information systems (IS) research, a common understanding of smartness has not yet been established. And while it is recognized that smartness encompasses more than the use of impressive information technology applications, a unified conceptualization of how smartness is manifested in IS research is lacking. To this end, we conducted a structured literature review applying techniques from Grounded Theory. We found that smartness occurs through actions, in which smart things and individuals interact, process information, and make data-based decisions that are perceived as smart. Building on these findings, we propose the concept of a \u27smart action\u27 and derive a general definition of smartness. Our findings augment knowledge about how smartness is formed, offering a new perspective on smartness. The concept of a smart action unifies and increases understanding of \u27smartness\u27 in IS research. It supports further research by providing a concept for describing, analyzing, and designing smart actions, smart devices, and smart services
Telekommunikaatioalalta lĂ€htöisin olevan alustaekosysteemin strateginen laajentuminen â tutkimus suunnittelun kautta
In recent years, many established companies have been trying to implement platform business models in the hope of achieving similar success as the platform leaders such as Amazon and Apple. The platform leaders have been successful in forging platform ecosystems by attracting various participants to their platforms, such as the Amazon marketplace and Apple iOS, and have simultaneously set themselves in a lucrative position to collect rents from them. This thesis is conducted from the perspective of a global technology company, which aims to expand the ecosystem around a technology platform, which is currently only leveraged within the company in serving its customers. The platform originates in the telecommunications industry, and it integrates analytics, virtualization and automation in order to help communications service providers with their increasing costs and dwindling revenues.
The design science research methodology was chosen for the study as the topic of exploring expansion opportunities for a platform ecosystem in a real-world context is clearly forward-looking in nature. The methodology allows for the creation of practical artifacts, platform ecosystem models in this case, which the company could implement. An extensive literature review was conducted to provide a solid background for the empirical part of the study with a focus on the platform economy, ecosystems and relevant technical topics. The empirical part of the study focused on exploring the specific context and designing interventions that would allow overcoming identified challenges in the context. Additionally, the potential beneficial outcomes of the interventions, as well as the mechanisms of reaching those outcomes, were studied. The data for the empirical part of the study was collected by interviewing employees of the focal company, representatives of potential ecosystem partner companies and external industry experts.
The thesis resulted in the design of three platform ecosystem models. The models result from either one or both of the two following interventions. Intervention 1 proposes the involvement of development partners to the development of the applications to the platform, called complementary content in this thesis, while intervention 2 proposes involving sales partners in the ecosystem and creating a sales portal or a digital marketplace for the complementary content. The research provides a detailed understanding of the potential beneficial outcomes of the interventions and also describes the mechanisms for reaching them. This thesis presents valuable insight to the decision-makers of the focal company but also to practicing professionals outside the company who are looking into opportunities to expand their platform ecosystems. Academically this thesis builds on the platform ecosystem literature and validates the use of design science research methodology in theses studying a strategic topic, such as the expansion of a platform ecosystem.Useat vakiintuneet yritykset ovat pyrkineet viime vuosina ottamaan kÀyttöön alustatalouden liiketoimintamalleja. TÀtÀ alustaa kÀytetÀÀn tÀllÀ hetkellÀ yrityksessÀ ainoastaan sisÀisesti operaattoriasiakkaiden auttamiseen heidÀn nousevien kustannustensa sekÀ laskevien liikevaihtojensa kanssa. Alusta on lÀhtöisin telekommunikaatioalalta ja siinÀ yhdistyy analytiikka, virtualisaatio sekÀ automaatio.
Tutkimus toteutettiin suunnittelun kautta, koska työssÀ tutkitaan tulevaisuusorientoituneesti alustaekosysteemin laajentumismahdollisuuksia tosielÀmÀn kontekstissa. Suunnittelun kautta toteutettava tutkimus mahdollistaa kohdeyritykselle kÀyttökelpoisten artefaktien luomisen, jotka ovat tÀssÀ tapauksessa alustaekosysteemimalleja. Työn empiiristÀ osaa tukemaan toteutettiin laaja kirjallisuuskatsaus, jossa keskityttiin alustatalouteen, ekosysteemeihin sekÀ olennaisiin teknologisiin aiheisiin. EmpiirisessÀ osassa keskityttiin tutkimaan kyseessÀ olevan alustan kontekstia ja mÀÀrittÀmÀÀn siihen perustuen interventioita, jotka mahdollistavat esille nousseiden haasteiden ratkaisemisen. TÀmÀn lisÀksi tutkittiin interventioiden hyödyllisiÀ seurauksia ja niiden saavuttamiseen vaadittavia mekanismeja. Empiirisen osan aineisto kerÀttiin haastattelemalla kohdeyrityksen työntekijöitÀ, mahdollisten ekosysteemikumppaniyritysten edustajia sekÀ yrityksen ulkopuolisia toimialaeksperttejÀ.
Työn tuloksena syntyi kolme alustaekosysteemimallia, joissa toteutetaan joko yksi tai molemmat esitetyistÀ interventioista. Interventiossa 1 alustaekosysteemiin sisÀllytettÀisiin sovelluskehittÀjÀkumppaneita. Interventiossa 2 mukaan otettaisiin myyntikumppaneita ja luotaisiin myyntiportaali tai markkinapaikka alustalla toimiville sovelluksille. Tutkimus tarjoaa yksityiskohtaista tietoa nÀiden interventioiden hyödyllisistÀ seurauksista sekÀ niistÀ mekanismeista, joilla ne voidaan saavuttaa. Kohdeyrityksen pÀÀtöksentekijöille tÀmÀ työ tarjoaa arvokasta ymmÀrrystÀ tutkitun alustan tulevaisuutta varten. Myös yrityksen ulkopuoliset ammattilaiset voivat hyötyÀ työn tuloksista pohtiessaan mahdollisuuksiaan laajentaa alustaekosysteemejÀÀn. Akateemisesti katsoen tÀmÀ tutkimus lisÀÀ ymmÀrrystÀ alustaekosysteemeistÀ. LisÀksi työ vahvistaa suunnittelun kautta toteutettavan tutkimuksen toimivuuden diplomitöissÀ, joissa tutkitaan strategisia aiheita, kuten alustaekosysteemin laajentamista
