Institutionalisation of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems: An Integrative Framework

    Get PDF
The importance of studying institutional view and theories in the context of contemporary business organisations have been emphasized by many researchers. However, the literature overlooked the institutional elements which are influencing technology implementation in organisations. This study aims to investigate the issues posed to ERP implementation through the lens of technology institutionalisation perspective by considering institutional theory, institutional pressures, and other organisational and technological factors. This research in progress paper describes the research framework for ERP institutionalisation that provides an integrative view of how ERP is implemented, assimilated, and institutionalised within the organisations. This framework brings together the effects of various well-defined IS theories into a unified and integrated structure. Moreover, this paper looks at a broad sample of current IS literature on ERP systems’ successes and failures over various stages of institutionalisation process. Based on the results of literature analysis, tackling an ERP institutionalisation, for any organisation, requires some introspection and true assessment of priorities, objectives and external business environment of the organisation

Living with ERP: A Sand Clock Model of End User Problems

Although a number of studies highlighted problems related to ERP systems, most of these studies focus on the problems during the project and implementation stages but not during the post-implementation process. Problems encountered in the process of using ERP would hinder the effective exploitation and the extended and continued use of ERP systems and their value to organisations. This paper investigates the different types of problems (operational, supervisory and managerial) users faced in using ERP. The paper adopts a qualitative method and uses data collected from two cases and 26 interviews to inductively develop a theoretical model in classifying ERP usage problems. A sand clock model of ERP usage problem is formulated to classify the identified problems into data quality, system quality, interface and infrastructure. The theoretical contribution of this paper is in gaining deeper insight on the impediments to effective use of ERP. From the practical point of view, this paper could assist managers to reach the sources of problems encountered by end-users and overcoming them

Deploying an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution is a complex and risk laden program of work that not every company is successful in delivering. In this study, the author (an IT leader at a large pharmaceutical company) presents a case study where he draws upon his experiences and learnings from leading two ERP implementations, as well as a literature review examining whether the author's hypothesis that IT Governance is the critical success factor in ERP deployments is supported amongst IT industry researchers, analysts, and strategists. The study goes was able show a strong correlation between companies who have strong IT Governance presence on ERP deployments and their ability to deliver the program of work successfully.Master of Science in Information Scienc

An Examination of the Role of IT Governance in the ERP Post-Implementation Phase

    Get PDF
Problems associated with ERP implementations are most prevalent during the post-implementation phase because this is when the mistakes of the prior phases surface and become real. The cost overruns and adverse business impacts in an organization during this phase can threaten the survival of the organization and impact sales revenue. For this reason, research that increases our understanding of this phase in order to minimize the negative impacts and failure during this period is critical. This study utilizes variance research to explain similarities and differences in post-implementation outcomes across organizations that have implemented or upgraded their ERP systems. This approach does this by linking post-implementation outcomes to varying levels of IT governance. IT governance is examined by studying the ownership, accountability, and decision making structures in each organization. In-depth interviews were conducted with twenty-two participants in four organizations that implemented ERP systems. Analysis of the data collected across all cases resulted in initial propositions that can be investigated further
