    Evaluation of Intelligent Intrusion Detection Models

    This paper discusses an evaluation methodology that can be used to assess the performance of intelligent techniques at detecting, as well as predicting, unauthorised activities in networks. The effectiveness and the performance of any developed intrusion detection model will be determined by means of evaluation and validation. The evaluation and the learning prediction performance for this task will be discussed, together with a description of validation procedures. The performance of developed detection models that incorporate intelligent elements can be evaluated using well known standard methods, such as matrix confusion, ROC curves and Lift charts. In this paper these methods, as well as other useful evaluation approaches, are discussed.Peer reviewe

    SENATUS: An Approach to Joint Traffic Anomaly Detection and Root Cause Analysis

    In this paper, we propose a novel approach, called SENATUS, for joint traffic anomaly detection and root-cause analysis. Inspired from the concept of a senate, the key idea of the proposed approach is divided into three stages: election, voting and decision. At the election stage, a small number of \nop{traffic flow sets (termed as senator flows)}senator flows are chosen\nop{, which are used} to represent approximately the total (usually huge) set of traffic flows. In the voting stage, anomaly detection is applied on the senator flows and the detected anomalies are correlated to identify the most possible anomalous time bins. Finally in the decision stage, a machine learning technique is applied to the senator flows of each anomalous time bin to find the root cause of the anomalies. We evaluate SENATUS using traffic traces collected from the Pan European network, GEANT, and compare against another approach which detects anomalies using lossless compression of traffic histograms. We show the effectiveness of SENATUS in diagnosing anomaly types: network scans and DoS/DDoS attacks

    Fake View Analytics in Online Video Services

    Online video-on-demand(VoD) services invariably maintain a view count for each video they serve, and it has become an important currency for various stakeholders, from viewers, to content owners, advertizers, and the online service providers themselves. There is often significant financial incentive to use a robot (or a botnet) to artificially create fake views. How can we detect the fake views? Can we detect them (and stop them) using online algorithms as they occur? What is the extent of fake views with current VoD service providers? These are the questions we study in the paper.     Anomaly Detection in Cloud Components

    Cloud platforms, under the hood, consist of a complex inter-connected stack of hardware and software components. Each of these components can fail which may lead to an outage. Our goal is to improve the quality of Cloud services through early detection of such failures by analyzing resource utilization metrics.
