In Vivo Evaluation of the Secure Opportunistic Schemes Middleware using a Delay Tolerant Social Network

Over the past decade, online social networks (OSNs) such as Twitter and Facebook have thrived and experienced rapid growth to over 1 billion users. A major evolution would be to leverage the characteristics of OSNs to evaluate the effectiveness of the many routing schemes developed by the research community in real-world scenarios. In this paper, we showcase the Secure Opportunistic Schemes (SOS) middleware which allows different routing schemes to be easily implemented relieving the burden of security and connection establishment. The feasibility of creating a delay tolerant social network is demonstrated by using SOS to power AlleyOop Social, a secure delay tolerant networking research platform that serves as a real-life mobile social networking application for iOS devices. SOS and AlleyOop Social allow users to interact, publish messages, and discover others that share common interests in an intermittent network using Bluetooth, peer-to-peer WiFi, and infrastructure WiFi.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted in ICDCS 2017. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1702.0565

A Neighborhood-Based Trust Protocol for Secure Collaborative Routing in Wireless Mobile D2D HetNets

Heterogeneous Device-to-Device mobile networks are characterised by frequent network disruption and unreliability of peers delivering messages to destinations. Trust-based protocols has been widely used to mitigate the security and performance problems in D2D networks. Despite several efforts made by previous researchers in the design of trust-based routing for efficient collaborative networks, there are fewer related studies that focus on the peers’ neighbourhood as a routing metrics’ element for a secure and efficient trust-based protocol. In this paper, we propose and validate a trust-based protocol that takes into account the similarity of peers’ neighbourhood coefficients to improve routing performance in mobile HetNets environments. The results of this study demonstrate that peers’ neighborhood connectivity in the network is a characteristic that can influence peers’ routing performance. Furthermore, our analysis shows that our proposed protocol only forwards the message to the companions with a higher probability of delivering the packets, thus improving the delivery ratio and minimizing latency and mitigating the problem of malicious peers ( using packet dropping strategy)

Understanding complementary multi-layer collaborative heuristics for adaptive caching in heterogeneous mobile opportunistic networks

Current research aims to deal with emerging challenges of the opportunistic discovery of content stored in remote mobile publishers and the delivery to the subscribers in heterogeneous mobile opportunistic networks. Innovative network and service architectures leverage in-network caching to improve transmission efficiency, reduce delay and handle disconnections. In this paper, we investigate the influences of multi-dimensional heuristics utilised by our adaptive collaborative caching framework CafRepCache on the performance of content dissemination and query in heterogeneous mobile opportunistic environments. We consider the complementary multi-layer heuristics that combine social driven, resources driven, ego network driven and content popularity driven analytics. We extensively evaluate the performance of each complementary heuristic and discuss the impact of each one on every layer of our caching framework across heterogeneous real-world mobility, connectivity traces and use YouTube dataset for different workload and content popularity patterns. We show that the multilayer heuristics enable CafRepCache to be responsive to dynamically changing network topology, congestion avoidance and varying patterns of content publishers/subscribers which balances the trade-off that achieves higher cache hit ratio, delivery success ratios while keeping lower delays and packet loss
