An Evaluation of Deep CNN Baselines for Scene-Independent Person Re-Identification
In recent years, a variety of proposed methods based on deep convolutional
neural networks (CNNs) have improved the state of the art for large-scale
person re-identification (ReID). While a large number of optimizations and
network improvements have been proposed, there has been relatively little
evaluation of the influence of training data and baseline network architecture.
In particular, it is usually assumed either that networks are trained on
labeled data from the deployment location (scene-dependent), or else adapted
with unlabeled data, both of which complicate system deployment. In this paper,
we investigate the feasibility of achieving scene-independent person ReID by
forming a large composite dataset for training. We present an in-depth
comparison of several CNN baseline architectures for both scene-dependent and
scene-independent ReID, across a range of training dataset sizes. We show that
scene-independent ReID can produce leading-edge results, competitive with
unsupervised domain adaption techniques. Finally, we introduce a new dataset

Quality Aware Network for Set to Set Recognition
This paper targets on the problem of set to set recognition, which learns the
metric between two image sets. Images in each set belong to the same identity.
Since images in a set can be complementary, they hopefully lead to higher
accuracy in practical applications. However, the quality of each sample cannot
be guaranteed, and samples with poor quality will hurt the metric. In this
paper, the quality aware network (QAN) is proposed to confront this problem,
where the quality of each sample can be automatically learned although such
information is not explicitly provided in the training stage. The network has
two branches, where the first branch extracts appearance feature embedding for
each sample and the other branch predicts quality score for each sample.
Features and quality scores of all samples in a set are then aggregated to
generate the final feature embedding. We show that the two branches can be
trained in an end-to-end manner given only the set-level identity annotation.
Analysis on gradient spread of this mechanism indicates that the quality
learned by the network is beneficial to set-to-set recognition and simplifies
the distribution that the network needs to fit. Experiments on both face
verification and person re-identification show advantages of the proposed QAN.

Context-aware CNNs for person head detection
Person detection is a key problem for many computer vision tasks. While face
detection has reached maturity, detecting people under a full variation of
camera view-points, human poses, lighting conditions and occlusions is still a
difficult challenge. In this work we focus on detecting human heads in natural
scenes. Starting from the recent local R-CNN object detector, we extend it with
two types of contextual cues. First, we leverage person-scene relations and
propose a Global CNN model trained to predict positions and scales of heads
directly from the full image. Second, we explicitly model pairwise relations
among objects and train a Pairwise CNN model using a structured-output
surrogate loss. The Local, Global and Pairwise models are combined into a joint
CNN framework. To train and test our full model, we introduce a large dataset
composed of 369,846 human heads annotated in 224,740 movie frames. We evaluate
our method and demonstrate improvements of person head detection against
several recent baselines in three datasets. We also show improvements of the

Beyond Frontal Faces: Improving Person Recognition Using Multiple Cues
We explore the task of recognizing peoples' identities in photo albums in an
unconstrained setting. To facilitate this, we introduce the new People In Photo
Albums (PIPA) dataset, consisting of over 60000 instances of 2000 individuals
collected from public Flickr photo albums. With only about half of the person
images containing a frontal face, the recognition task is very challenging due
to the large variations in pose, clothing, camera viewpoint, image resolution
and illumination. We propose the Pose Invariant PErson Recognition (PIPER)
method, which accumulates the cues of poselet-level person recognizers trained
by deep convolutional networks to discount for the pose variations, combined
with a face recognizer and a global recognizer. Experiments on three different
settings confirm that in our unconstrained setup PIPER significantly improves
on the performance of DeepFace, which is one of the best face recognizers as
measured on the LFW dataset
XNect: Real-time Multi-Person 3D Motion Capture with a Single RGB Camera
We present a real-time approach for multi-person 3D motion capture at over 30
fps using a single RGB camera. It operates successfully in generic scenes which
may contain occlusions by objects and by other people. Our method operates in
subsequent stages. The first stage is a convolutional neural network (CNN) that
estimates 2D and 3D pose features along with identity assignments for all
visible joints of all individuals.We contribute a new architecture for this
CNN, called SelecSLS Net, that uses novel selective long and short range skip
connections to improve the information flow allowing for a drastically faster
network without compromising accuracy. In the second stage, a fully connected
neural network turns the possibly partial (on account of occlusion) 2Dpose and
3Dpose features for each subject into a complete 3Dpose estimate per
individual. The third stage applies space-time skeletal model fitting to the
predicted 2D and 3D pose per subject to further reconcile the 2D and 3D pose,
and enforce temporal coherence. Our method returns the full skeletal pose in
joint angles for each subject. This is a further key distinction from previous
work that do not produce joint angle results of a coherent skeleton in real
time for multi-person scenes. The proposed system runs on consumer hardware at
a previously unseen speed of more than 30 fps given 512x320 images as input
while achieving state-of-the-art accuracy, which we will demonstrate on a range
