Building Blocks for Control System Software
Software implementation of control laws for industrial systems seem straightforward, but is not. The computer code stemming from the control laws is mostly not more than 10 to 30% of the total. A building-block approach for embedded control system development is advocated to enable a fast and efficient software design process.\ud
We have developed the CTJ library, Communicating Threads for Java¿,\ud
resulting in fundamental elements for creating building blocks to implement communication using channels. Due to the simulate-ability, our building block method is suitable for a concurrent engineering design approach. Furthermore, via a stepwise refinement process, using verification by simulation, the implementation trajectory can be done efficiently

The research of our team deals with the realization of control schemes on digital computers. As such the emphasis is on embedded control software implementation. Applications are in the field of mechatronic devices, using a mechatronic design approach (the integrated and optimal design of a mechanical system and its embedded control system). The ultimate goal is to support the application developer (i.e. mechatronic design engineer) such that implementing control software according to ðo it the first time right¿ becomes business as usual
Real-time and fault tolerance in distributed control software
Closed loop control systems typically contain multitude of spatially distributed sensors and actuators operated simultaneously. So those systems are parallel and distributed in their essence. But mapping this parallelism onto the given distributed hardware architecture, brings in some additional requirements: safe multithreading, optimal process allocation, real-time scheduling of bus and network resources. Nowadays, fault tolerance methods and fast even online reconfiguration are becoming increasingly important. All those often conflicting requirements, make design and implementation of real-time distributed control systems an extremely difficult task, that requires substantial knowledge in several areas of control and computer science. Although many design methods have been proposed so far, none of them had succeeded to cover all important aspects of the problem at hand. Inferring Energy Bounds via Static Program Analysis and Evolutionary Modeling of Basic Blocks
The ever increasing number and complexity of energy-bound devices (such as
the ones used in Internet of Things applications, smart phones, and mission
critical systems) pose an important challenge on techniques to optimize their
energy consumption and to verify that they will perform their function within
the available energy budget. In this work we address this challenge from the
software point of view and propose a novel parametric approach to estimating
tight bounds on the energy consumed by program executions that are practical
for their application to energy verification and optimization. Our approach
divides a program into basic (branchless) blocks and estimates the maximal and
minimal energy consumption for each block using an evolutionary algorithm. Then
it combines the obtained values according to the program control flow, using
static analysis, to infer functions that give both upper and lower bounds on
the energy consumption of the whole program and its procedures as functions on
input data sizes. We have tested our approach on (C-like) embedded programs
running on the XMOS hardware platform. However, our method is general enough to
be applied to other microprocessor architectures and programming languages. The
bounds obtained by our prototype implementation can be tight while remaining on
the safe side of budgets in practice, as shown by our experimental evaluation.Comment: Pre-proceedings paper presented at the 27th International Symposium

TANGO: Transparent heterogeneous hardware Architecture deployment for eNergy Gain in Operation
The paper is concerned with the issue of how software systems actually use
Heterogeneous Parallel Architectures (HPAs), with the goal of optimizing power
consumption on these resources. It argues the need for novel methods and tools
to support software developers aiming to optimise power consumption resulting
from designing, developing, deploying and running software on HPAs, while
maintaining other quality aspects of software to adequate and agreed levels. To
do so, a reference architecture to support energy efficiency at application
construction, deployment, and operation is discussed, as well as its

An open platform for rapid-prototyping protection and control schemes with IEC 61850
Communications is becoming increasingly important to the operation of protection and control schemes. Although offering many benefits, using standards-based communications, particularly IEC 61850, in the course of the research and development of novel schemes can be complex. This paper describes an open-source platform which enables the rapid prototyping of communications-enhanced schemes. The platform automatically generates the data model and communications code required for an intelligent electronic device to implement a publisher-subscriber generic object-oriented substation event and sampled-value messaging. The generated code is tailored to a particular system configuration description (SCD) file, and is therefore extremely efficient at runtime. It is shown here how a model-centric tool, such as the open-source Eclipse Modeling Framework, can be used to manage the complexity of the IEC 61850 standard, by providing a framework for validating SCD files and by automating parts of the code generation process. The flexibility and convenience of the platform are demonstrated through a prototype of a real-time, fast-acting load-shedding scheme for a low-voltage microgrid network. The platform is the first open-source implementation of IEC 61850 which is suitable for real-time applications, such as protection, and is therefore readily available for research and education
