Objective assessment of region of interest-aware adaptive multimedia streaming quality
Adaptive multimedia streaming relies on controlled
adjustment of content bitrate and consequent video quality variation in order to meet the bandwidth constraints of the communication
link used for content delivery to the end-user. The values of the easy to measure network-related Quality of Service metrics have no direct relationship with the way moving images are
perceived by the human viewer. Consequently variations in the video stream bitrate are not clearly linked to similar variation in the user perceived quality. This is especially true if some human visual system-based adaptation techniques are employed. As research has shown, there are certain image regions in each frame of a video sequence on which the users are more interested than in the others. This paper presents the Region of Interest-based Adaptive Scheme (ROIAS) which adjusts differently the regions within each frame of the streamed multimedia content based on the user interest in them. ROIAS is presented and discussed in terms of the adjustment algorithms employed and their impact on the human perceived video quality. Comparisons with existing approaches, including a constant quality adaptation scheme across the whole frame area, are performed employing two objective metrics which estimate user perceived video quality
Acceptance and usage of webcasting among users of selected cyber cafes in Klang Valley
The Malaysian public now has access to the Internet not only at home and the workplace, but also at cyber cafés. This study aims to examine the level of acceptance of webcasting among users of selected cyber cafés in the Klang Valley. The specific objectives of the study are: to determine the profile of webcasting users and its usage; to determine the types of webcasting technology most frequently used, level of knowledge of webcasting and the main source of knowledge in becoming aware of webcasting; to determine the acceptance of webcasting among non-users of webcasting; and to determine the relationship between behavioral intention to use and the actual usage of webcasting among users of webcasting. This study used the survey design, using purposive sampling to select the cyber cafés and visitors of these cafés. The findings indicate that usage of webcasting is still relatively low among users of selected cyber cafés in the Klang Valley. Users of webcasting were found to be mostly male, young and relatively well educated with at least a diploma as the highest level of education obtained
Design and analysis for TCP-friendly window-based congestion control
The current congestion control mechanisms for the Internet date back to the early 1980’s and were
primarily designed to stop congestion collapse with the typical traffic of that era. In recent years the
amount of traffic generated by real-time multimedia applications has substantially increased, and the
existing congestion control often does not opt to those types of applications. By this reason, the Internet
can be fall into a uncontrolled system such that the overall throughput oscillates too much by a single
flow which in turn can lead a poor application performance. Apart from the network level concerns,
those types of applications greatly care of end-to-end delay and smoother throughput in which the
conventional congestion control schemes do not suit. In this research, we will investigate improving the
state of congestion control for real-time and interactive multimedia applications. The focus of this work
is to provide fairness among applications using different types of congestion control mechanisms to get
a better link utilization, and to achieve smoother and predictable throughput with suitable end-to-end
packet delay
Don't Repeat Yourself: Seamless Execution and Analysis of Extensive Network Experiments
This paper presents MACI, the first bespoke framework for the management, the
scalable execution, and the interactive analysis of a large number of network
experiments. Driven by the desire to avoid repetitive implementation of just a
few scripts for the execution and analysis of experiments, MACI emerged as a
generic framework for network experiments that significantly increases
efficiency and ensures reproducibility. To this end, MACI incorporates and
integrates established simulators and analysis tools to foster rapid but
systematic network experiments.
We found MACI indispensable in all phases of the research and development
process of various communication systems, such as i) an extensive DASH video
streaming study, ii) the systematic development and improvement of Multipath
TCP schedulers, and iii) research on a distributed topology graph pattern
matching algorithm. With this work, we make MACI publicly available to the
