Neuroimaging study designs, computational analyses and data provenance using the LONI pipeline.
Modern computational neuroscience employs diverse software tools and multidisciplinary expertise to analyze heterogeneous brain data. The classical problems of gathering meaningful data, fitting specific models, and discovering appropriate analysis and visualization tools give way to a new class of computational challenges--management of large and incongruous data, integration and interoperability of computational resources, and data provenance. We designed, implemented and validated a new paradigm for addressing these challenges in the neuroimaging field. Our solution is based on the LONI Pipeline environment [3], [4], a graphical workflow environment for constructing and executing complex data processing protocols. We developed study-design, database and visual language programming functionalities within the LONI Pipeline that enable the construction of complete, elaborate and robust graphical workflows for analyzing neuroimaging and other data. These workflows facilitate open sharing and communication of data and metadata, concrete processing protocols, result validation, and study replication among different investigators and research groups. The LONI Pipeline features include distributed grid-enabled infrastructure, virtualized execution environment, efficient integration, data provenance, validation and distribution of new computational tools, automated data format conversion, and an intuitive graphical user interface. We demonstrate the new LONI Pipeline features using large scale neuroimaging studies based on data from the International Consortium for Brain Mapping [5] and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative [6]. Designing for change: mash-up personal learning environments
Institutions for formal education and most work places are equipped today with at least some kind of tools that bring together people and content artefacts in learning activities to support them in constructing and processing information and knowledge. For almost half a century, science and practice have been discussing models on how to bring personalisation through digital means to these environments. Learning environments and their construction as well as maintenance makes up the most crucial part of the learning process and the desired learning outcomes and theories should take this into account. Instruction itself as the predominant paradigm has to step down.
The learning environment is an (if not 'theĂŻÂżÂœ) important outcome of a learning process, not just a stage to perform a 'learning play'. For these good reasons, we therefore consider instructional design theories to be flawed.
In this article we first clarify key concepts and assumptions for personalised learning environments. Afterwards, we summarise our critique on the contemporary models for personalised adaptive learning. Subsequently, we propose our alternative, i.e. the concept of a mash-up personal learning environment that provides adaptation mechanisms for learning environment construction and maintenance. The web application mash-up solution allows learners to reuse existing (web-based) tools plus services.
Our alternative, LISL is a design language model for creating, managing, maintaining, and learning about learning environment design; it is complemented by a proof of concept, the MUPPLE platform. We demonstrate this approach with a prototypical implementation and a â we think â comprehensible example. Finally, we round up the article with a discussion on possible extensions of this new model and open problems
Critical success factors for e-tendering implementation in construction collaborative environments : people and process issues
The construction industry is increasingly engulfed by globalisation where clients, business partners and customers are found in virtually every corner of the world. Communicating, reaching and supporting them are no longer optional but are imperative for continued business growth and success. A key component of enterprise communication reach is collaborative environments (for the construction industry) which allows customers, suppliers, partners and other project team members secure access to project information, products or services they need at any given moment. Implementation of the stated critical success factors of the project is essential to ensure optimal performance and benefits from the system to all parties involved. AKARI-CAS --- Online Service for AKARI All-Sky Catalogues
The AKARI All-Sky Catalogues are an important infrared astronomical database
for next-generation astronomy that take over the IRAS catalog. We have
developed an online service, AKARI Catalogue Archive Server (AKARI-CAS), for
astronomers. The service includes useful and attractive search tools and visual
tools.
One of the new features of AKARI-CAS is cached SIMBAD/NED entries, which can
match AKARI catalogs with other catalogs stored in SIMBAD or NED. To allow
advanced queries to the databases, direct input of SQL is also supported. In
those queries, fast dynamic cross-identification between registered catalogs is
a remarkable feature. In addition, multiwavelength quick-look images are
displayed in the visualization tools, which will increase the value of the
service.
In the construction of our service, we considered a wide variety of
astronomers' requirements. As a result of our discussion, we concluded that
supporting users' SQL submissions is the best solution for the requirements.
Therefore, we implemented an RDBMS layer so that it covered important
facilities including the whole processing of tables. We found that PostgreSQL
is the best open-source RDBMS products for such purpose, and we wrote codes for
both simple and advanced searches into the SQL stored functions. To implement
such stored functions for fast radial search and cross-identification with
minimum cost, we applied a simple technique that is not based on dividing
celestial sphere such as HTM or HEALPix. In contrast, the Web application layer
became compact, and was written in simple procedural PHP codes. In total, our

Development of a web-based information system for cascading utilisation of construction materials
This paper presents a Web-based information system for promoting the cascading utilisation of construction materials in order to mitigate the increasing environmental pressure by the construction industry. First, this paper points out me weaknesses of current waste material exchange systems. Then, a new approach is introduced to reuse demolished materials, by which the utilisation of demolished materials may be ascertained before the demolition is actually produced.. Information technologies, including web-based intelligent and distributed systems, are applied to actua1ise this approach. Finally, the development and implementation of the system is described in detail.<br /
