A Hierarchal Planning Framework for AUV Mission Management in a Spatio-Temporal Varying Ocean
The purpose of this paper is to provide a hierarchical dynamic mission
planning framework for a single autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to
accomplish task-assign process in a limited time interval while operating in an
uncertain undersea environment, where spatio-temporal variability of the
operating field is taken into account. To this end, a high level reactive
mission planner and a low level motion planning system are constructed. The
high level system is responsible for task priority assignment and guiding the
vehicle toward a target of interest considering on-time termination of the
mission. The lower layer is in charge of generating optimal trajectories based
on sequence of tasks and dynamicity of operating terrain. The mission planner
is able to reactively re-arrange the tasks based on mission/terrain updates
while the low level planner is capable of coping unexpected changes of the
terrain by correcting the old path and re-generating a new trajectory. As a
result, the vehicle is able to undertake the maximum number of tasks with
certain degree of maneuverability having situational awareness of the operating
field. The computational engine of the mentioned framework is based on the
biogeography based optimization (BBO) algorithm that is capable of providing
efficient solutions. To evaluate the performance of the proposed framework,
firstly, a realistic model of undersea environment is provided based on
realistic map data, and then several scenarios, treated as real experiments,
are designed through the simulation study. Additionally, to show the robustness
and reliability of the framework, Monte-Carlo simulation is carried out and
statistical analysis is performed. The results of simulations indicate the
significant potential of the two-level hierarchical mission planning system in
mission success and its applicability for real-time implementation
Synthesis of Switching Protocols from Temporal Logic Specifications
We propose formal means for synthesizing switching protocols that determine the sequence in which the modes of a switched system are activated to satisfy certain high-level specifications in linear temporal logic. The synthesized protocols are robust against exogenous disturbances on the continuous dynamics. Two types of finite transition systems, namely under- and over-approximations, that abstract the behavior of the underlying continuous dynamics are defined. In particular, we show that the discrete synthesis problem for an under-approximation can be formulated as a model checking problem, whereas that for an over-approximation can be transformed into a two-player game. Both of these formulations are amenable to efficient, off-the-shelf software tools. By construction, existence of a discrete switching strategy for the discrete synthesis problem guarantees the existence of a continuous switching protocol for the continuous synthesis problem, which can be implemented at the continuous level to ensure the correctness of the nonlinear switched system. Moreover, the proposed framework can be straightforwardly extended to accommodate specifications that require reacting to possibly adversarial external events. Finally, these results are illustrated using three examples from different application domains
Traffic Network Control from Temporal Logic Specifications
We propose a framework for generating a signal control policy for a traffic
network of signalized intersections to accomplish control objectives
expressible using linear temporal logic. By applying techniques from model
checking and formal methods, we obtain a correct-by-construction controller
that is guaranteed to satisfy complex specifications. To apply these tools, we
identify and exploit structural properties particular to traffic networks that
allow for efficient computation of a finite state abstraction. In particular,
traffic networks exhibit a componentwise monotonicity property which allows
reach set computations that scale linearly with the dimension of the continuous
state space
Negotiating the Probabilistic Satisfaction of Temporal Logic Motion Specifications
We propose a human-supervised control synthesis method for a stochastic
Dubins vehicle such that the probability of satisfying a specification given as
a formula in a fragment of Probabilistic Computational Tree Logic (PCTL) over a
set of environmental properties is maximized. Under some mild assumptions, we
construct a finite approximation for the motion of the vehicle in the form of a
tree-structured Markov Decision Process (MDP). We introduce an efficient
algorithm, which exploits the tree structure of the MDP, for synthesizing a
control policy that maximizes the probability of satisfaction. For the proposed
PCTL fragment, we define the specification update rules that guarantee the
increase (or decrease) of the satisfaction probability. We introduce an
incremental algorithm for synthesizing an updated MDP control policy that
reuses the initial solution. The initial specification can be updated, using
the rules, until the supervisor is satisfied with both the updated
specification and the corresponding satisfaction probability. We propose an
