    Mass-Market Receiver for Static Positioning: Tests and Statistical Analyses

    Nowadays, there are several low cost GPS receivers able to provide both pseudorange and carrier phase measurements in the L1band, that allow to have good realtime performances in outdoor condition. The present paper describes a set of dedicated tests in order to evaluate the positioning accuracy in static conditions. The quality of the pseudorange and the carrier phase measurements let hope for interesting results. The use of such kind of receiver could be extended to a large number of professional applications, like engineering fields: survey, georeferencing, monitoring, cadastral mapping and cadastral road. In this work, the receivers performance is verified considering a single frequency solution trying to fix the phase ambiguity, when possible.     An innovative mobile application for construction programme managers

    Construction programme management is a complex and information-intensive environment. The construction programme management team requires access to construction information in real-time and when needed. The current increasing use of mobile devices offers an opportunity to meet this need. The efficient management of construction programmes is one of the major factors for improving stakeholders’ satisfaction. An innovative tool is needed in accessing the right information at the right time, especially when spontaneous and urgent decision-making is needed. To this end, the innovative use of a mobile device in delivering information and services to the management team in real-time and based on their current context offers significant benefits. This paper discusses context-aware computing, the enabling technologies for geolocation and the development of a prototype, mobile, context-aware application for construction programme management. The prototype system developed is based on the findings from an earlier study of user requirements which showed that the ability to provide relevant information and services at an appropriate time and at the most appropriate location has the potential to improve the monitoring and control of construction programmes. The prototype system demonstrates the provision of context-specific information and services to construction programme managers using a mobile device. The benefits and limitations of the proposed approach are discussed and conclusions drawn about the potential impact of enhanced information delivery for the efficiency of the construction programme managers

    An Artificial Neural Network Embedded Position and Orientation Determination Algorithm for Low Cost MEMS INS/GPS Integrated Sensors

    Digital mobile mapping, which integrates digital imaging with direct geo-referencing, has developed rapidly over the past fifteen years. Direct geo-referencing is the determination of the time-variable position and orientation parameters for a mobile digital imager. The most common technologies used for this purpose today are satellite positioning using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS) using an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). They are usually integrated in such a way that the GPS receiver is the main position sensor, while the IMU is the main orientation sensor. The Kalman Filter (KF) is considered as the optimal estimation tool for real-time INS/GPS integrated kinematic position and orientation determination. An intelligent hybrid scheme consisting of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and KF has been proposed to overcome the limitations of KF and to improve the performance of the INS/GPS integrated system in previous studies. However, the accuracy requirements of general mobile mapping applications can’t be achieved easily, even by the use of the ANN-KF scheme. Therefore, this study proposes an intelligent position and orientation determination scheme that embeds ANN with conventional Rauch-Tung-Striebel (RTS) smoother to improve the overall accuracy of a MEMS INS/GPS integrated system in post-mission mode. By combining the Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) INS/GPS integrated system and the intelligent ANN-RTS smoother scheme proposed in this study, a cheaper but still reasonably accurate position and orientation determination scheme can be anticipated

    Genetic Programming for Smart Phone Personalisation

    Personalisation in smart phones requires adaptability to dynamic context based on user mobility, application usage and sensor inputs. Current personalisation approaches, which rely on static logic that is developed a priori, do not provide sufficient adaptability to dynamic and unexpected context. This paper proposes genetic programming (GP), which can evolve program logic in realtime, as an online learning method to deal with the highly dynamic context in smart phone personalisation. We introduce the concept of collaborative smart phone personalisation through the GP Island Model, in order to exploit shared context among co-located phone users and reduce convergence time. We implement these concepts on real smartphones to demonstrate the capability of personalisation through GP and to explore the benefits of the Island Model. Our empirical evaluations on two example applications confirm that the Island Model can reduce convergence time by up to two-thirds over standalone GP personalisation.Comment: 43 pages, 11 figure

    Minimizing the Localization Error in Wireless Sensor Networks Using Multi-Objective Optimization Techniques

    When it comes to remote sensing applications, wireless sensor networks (WSN) are crucial. Because of their small size, low cost, and ability to communicate with one another, sensors are finding more and more applications in a wide range of wireless technologies. The sensor network is the result of the fusion of microelectronic and electromechanical technologies. Through the localization procedure, the precise location of every network node can be determined. When trying to pinpoint the precise location of a node, a mobility anchor can be used in a helpful method known as mobility-assisted localization. In addition to improving route optimization for location-aware mobile nodes, the mobile anchor can do the same for stationary ones. This system proposes a multi-objective approach to minimizing the distance between the source and target nodes by employing the Dijkstra algorithm while avoiding obstacles. Both the Improved Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (IGOA) and the Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (BOA) have been incorporated into multi-objective models for obstacle avoidance and route planning. Accuracy in localization is enhanced by the proposed system. Further, it decreases both localization errors and computation time when compared to the existing systems

    A Novel 3D Indoor Node Localization Technique Using Weighted Least Square Estimation with Oppositional Beetle Swarm Optimization Algorithm

    Due to the familiarity of smart devices and the advancements of mobile Internet, there is a significant need to design an effective indoor localization system. Indoor localization is one of the recent technologies of location-based services (LBS), plays a vital role in commercial and civilian industries. It finds useful in public security, disaster management, and positioning navigation. Several research works have concentrated on the design of accurate 2D indoor localization techniques. Since the 3D indoor localization techniques offer numerous benefits, this paper presents a Novel 3D Indoor Node Localization Technique using Oppositional Beetle Swarm Optimization with Weighted Least Square Estimation (OBSO-WLSE) algorithm. The proposed OBSO-WLSE algorithm aims to improvise the localization accuracy with reduced computational time. Here, the OBSO algorithm is employed for estimating the initial locations of the target that results in the elimination of NLOS error. With respect to the initial location by OBSO technique, the WLSE technique performs iterated computations rapidly to determine the precise final location of the target. To improve the efficiency of the OBSO technique, the concept of oppositional based learning (OBL) is integrated into the traditional BSO algorithm.
