Building Open Educational Resources from the Ground Up: South Africa's Free High School Science Texts
This paper presents a case study of the development of the South African project Free High School Science Texts (FHSST), an initiative to develop a free high school science text for all teachers and learners in South Africa. The goals of the case study were two-fold: to examine and analyze the practices associated with the successes and challenges encountered by FHSST; and to encourage a participatory, analytical process that will assist other open education projects in thinking about and sharing their practices, processes, and strategies. Beyond its implications for South African education, the FHSST project can serve as a model for peer production of open content, offering insights into planning and decision making around 1) recruiting volunteers; 2) sustaining their participation; 3) using technology to create effective workflow; 4) conducting hackathons; and 5) facilitating teacher trials. Findings from this study offers insights into overall approaches and goals that may prove instrumental across open education projects, serving as a reference for development of assessment tools and resources that may assist open education projects in tracking, sharing, and advancing their learnings and success
Research report : Collaborative Peer 2 Peer Edition: Avoiding Conflicts is Better than Solving Conflicts
Collaborative edition is achieved by distinct sites that work independently
on (a copy of) a shared document. Conflicts may arise during this process and
must be solved by the collaborative editor. In pure Peer to Peer collaborative
editing, no centralization nor locks nor time-stamps are used which make
conflict resolution difficult. We propose an algorithm which relies on the
notion or semantics dependence and avoids the need of any integration
transformation to solve conflicts. Furthermore, it doesn't use any history file
recording operations performed since starting the edition process. We show how
to define editing operations for semi-structured documents i.e. XML-like trees,
that are enriched with informations derived for free from the editing process.
Then we define the semantics dependence relation required by the algorithm and
we present preliminary results obtained by a prototype implementation.Comment: 12 page
Methodological Development of the Interactive INTERLINKS Framework for Long Term Care
There is increasing international research into health and social care services for older people in need of long-term care (LTC), but problems remain with respect to acquiring robust comparative information to enable judgements to be made regarding the most beneficial and cost-effective approaches. The project âINTERLINKSâ (âHealth systems and LTC for older people in Europeâ) funded by the EU 7th Framework programme was developed to address the challenges associated with the accumulation and comparison of evidence in LTC across Europe. It developed a concept and method to describe and analyse LTC and its links with the health and social care system through the accumulation of policy and practice examples on an interactive web-based framework for LTC. This paper provides a critical overview of the theoretical and methodological approaches used to develop and implement the INTERLINKS Framework for LTC, with the aim of providing some guidance to researchers in this area. INTERLINKS has made a significant contribution to knowledge but robust evidence and comparability across European countries remain problematic due to the current and growing complexity and diversity of integrated LTC implementation
Ontology (Science)
Increasingly, in data-intensive areas of the life sciences, experimental results are being described in algorithmically useful ways with the help of ontologies. Such ontologies are authored and maintained by scientists to support the retrieval, integration and analysis of their data. The proposition to be defended here is that ontologies of this type – the Gene Ontology (GO) being the most conspicuous example – are a _part of science_. Initial evidence for the truth of this proposition (which some will find self-evident) is the increasing recognition of the importance of empirically-based methods of evaluation to the ontology develop¬ment work being undertaken in support of scientific research. Ontologies created by scientists must, of course, be associated with implementations satisfying the requirements of software engineering. But the ontologies are not themselves engineering artifacts, and to conceive them as such brings grievous consequences. Rather, ontologies such as the GO are in different respects comparable to scientific theories, to scientific databases, and to scientific journal publications. Such a view implies a new conception of what is involved in the author¬ing, maintenance and application of ontologies in scientific contexts, and therewith also a new approach to the evaluation of ontologies and to the training of ontologists
Data Consistency for P2P Collaborative Editing

Existing collaborative editing systems are centralised or depend on the number of sites. such systems cannot scale when deployed on P2P networks.
