    Domain Objects and Microservices for Systems Development: a roadmap

    Head Start since the War on Poverty: Taking on New Challenges to Address Persistent School Readiness Gaps

    This article explores Head Start’s overall effectiveness in improving school readiness outcomes and its potential to reduce gaps in these outcomes in light of changing program goals, resource and funding capacity, and the demographic changes in the low-income child population it serves. Although not an explicit goal of the Head Start program, we assess whether and how the program can address reducing school readiness gaps between children of different racial and ethnic backgrounds and income groups. Because of changing policy priorities and targeting vulnerable groups of children with diverse needs, meeting Head Start goals within funding constraints can be challenging. Yet, as we will show in this paper, the program has successfully adapted to its changing environment, and despite the evolving nature of its goals and populations served, it has managed to demonstrate a favorable impact on children. Future research on tailored programming, program implementation and impacts on specific groups of children is needed to help Head Start further improve its ability to address persistent school readiness gaps

    Precisely Analyzing Loss in Interface Adapter Chains

    Interface adaptation allows code written for one interface to be used with a software component with another interface. When multiple adapters are chained together to make certain adaptations possible, we need a way to analyze how well the adaptation is done in case there are more than one chains that can be used.     General Practice: Four Empirical Essays on GP Behaviour and Individuals’ Preferences for GPs

    On June 1, 2001 a reform took place in Norwegian general practice. This implied some advantages of importance to empirical analysis. First, a new organisation and a new payment system were introduced, which makes it possible to perform before-after analysis. Second, the GPs' preferred list-sizes are known, which makes it possible to analyse the effect of patient constraints for individual GPs. Third, the size and composition of patient-lists are known on the individual practice level. Previously, it was not known whether consultations provided during a certain period were given to a large or a small number of persons, and this made it difficult to compare practice styles. If, for instance, two GPs provide the same number of services during one year, but GP A is responsible for twice as many patients as GP B, GP B has a more service-intensive practice style. When information on the number of patients on the list is not known, we might erroneously conclude that A and B have the same practice style. Last, but not least, the population filled in an entry form ahead of the nationwide reform - which gives us information on preferences for GPs for the whole population. Report 2004: 1 "General Practice: Four Empirical Essays on GP Behaviour and Individuals Preferences for GPs" focuses on the General Practitioner reform. Four essays show different impacts this reform had on the general practitioners practice and preferences in the population. Summing up the reform in general practice is very well suited for collecting interesting data and doing empirical analysis. The first three analyses in this doctoral thesis by Hilde LurÄs are based on the evaluation of the list patient trial (in four municipalities in 1993-1996).     IETF standardization in the field of the Internet of Things (IoT): a survey

    Smart embedded objects will become an important part of what is called the Internet of Things. However, the integration of embedded devices into the Internet introduces several challenges, since many of the existing Internet technologies and protocols were not designed for this class of devices. In the past few years, there have been many efforts to enable the extension of Internet technologies to constrained devices. Initially, this resulted in proprietary protocols and architectures. Later, the integration of constrained devices into the Internet was embraced by IETF, moving towards standardized IP-based protocols. In this paper, we will briefly review the history of integrating constrained devices into the Internet, followed by an extensive overview of IETF standardization work in the 6LoWPAN, ROLL and CoRE working groups. This is complemented with a broad overview of related research results that illustrate how this work can be extended or used to tackle other problems and with a discussion on open issues and challenges. As such the aim of this paper is twofold: apart from giving readers solid insights in IETF standardization work on the Internet of Things, it also aims to encourage readers to further explore the world of Internet-connected objects, pointing to future research opportunities

    Distributed Simulation of Heterogeneous and Real-time Systems

    This work describes a framework for distributed simulation of cyber-physical systems (CPS). Modern CPS comprise large numbers of heterogeneous components, typically designed in very different tools and languages that are not or not easily composeable. Evaluating such large systems requires tools that integrate all components in a systematic, well-defined manner. This work leverages existing frameworks to facilitate the integration offers validation by simulation. A framework for distributed simulation is the IEEE High-Level Architecture (HLA) compliant tool CERTI, which provides the infrastructure for co-simulation of models in various simulation environments as well as hardware components. We use CERTI in combination with Ptolemy II, an environment for modeling and simulating heterogeneous systems. In particular, we focus on models of a CPS, including the physical dynamics of a plant, the software that controls the plant, and the network that enables the communication between controllers. We describe the Ptolemy extensions for the interaction with HLA and demonstrate the approach on a flight control system simulation

    A derivative-free approach for a simulation-based optimization problem in healthcare

    Hospitals have been challenged in recent years to deliver high quality care with limited resources. Given the pressure to contain costs,developing procedures for optimal resource allocation becomes more and more critical in this context. Indeed, under/overutilization of emergency room and ward resources can either compromise a hospital's ability to provide the best possible care, or result in precious funding going toward underutilized resources. Simulation--based optimization tools then help facilitating the planning and management of hospital services, by maximizing/minimizing some specific indices (e.g. net profit) subject to given clinical and economical constraints. In this work, we develop a simulation--based optimization approach for the resource planning of a specific hospital ward. At each step, we first consider a suitably chosen resource setting and evaluate both efficiency and satisfaction of the restrictions by means of a discrete--event simulation model. Then, taking into account the information obtained by the simulation process, we use a derivative--free optimization algorithm to modify the given setting. We report results for a real--world problem coming from the obstetrics ward of an Italian hospital showing both the effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed approach
