Using XDAQ in Application Scenarios of the CMS Experiment

XDAQ is a generic data acquisition software environment that emerged from a rich set of of use-cases encountered in the CMS experiment. They cover not the deployment for multiple sub-detectors and the operation of different processing and networking equipment as well as a distributed collaboration of users with different needs. The use of the software in various application scenarios demonstrated the viability of the approach. We discuss two applications, the tracker local DAQ system for front-end commissioning and the muon chamber validation system. The description is completed by a brief overview of XDAQ.Comment: Conference CHEP 2003 (Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics, La Jolla, CA

Tailoring a coherent control solution landscape by linear transforms of spectral phase basis

    Get PDF
Finding an optimal phase pattern in a multidimensional solution landscape becomes easier and faster if local optima are suppressed and contour lines are tailored towards closed convex patterns. Using wideband second harmonic generation as a coherent control test case, we show that a linear combination of spectral phase basis functions can result in such improvements and also in separable phase terms, each of which can be found independently. The improved shapes are attributed to a suppressed nonlinear shear, changing the relative orientation of contour lines. The first order approximation of the process shows a simple relation between input and output phase profiles, useful for pulse shaping at ultraviolet wavelengths

Exploiting the Design Freedom of RM

    Get PDF
This paper details how Rapid Manufacturing (RM) can overcome the restrictions imposed by the inherent process limitations of conventional manufacturing techniques and become the enabling technology in fabricating optimal products. A new design methodology capable of exploiting RM’s increased design freedom is therefore needed. Inspired by natural world structures of trees and bones, a multi-objective, genetic algorithm based topology optimisation approach is presented. This combines multiple unit cell structures and varying volume fractions to create a heterogeneous part structure which exhibits a uniform stress distribution.Mechanical Engineerin

Conservatism implications of shock test tailoring for multiple design environments

    Get PDF
A method for analyzing shock conservation in test specifications that have been tailored to qualify a structure for multiple design environments is discussed. Shock test conservation is qualified for shock response spectra, shock intensity spectra and ranked peak acceleration data in terms of an Index of Conservation (IOC) and an Overtest Factor (OTF). The multi-environment conservation analysis addresses the issue of both absolute and average conservation. The method is demonstrated in a case where four laboratory tests have been specified to qualify a component which must survive seven different field environments. Final judgment of the tailored test specification is shown to require an understanding of the predominant failure modes of the test item

Topology of Quantum Grey Soliton in Multi-Component Inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study the dispersion mechanism of Lieb mode excitations of both single and multi component ultra-cold atomic Bose gas, subject to a harmonic confinement through chirp management. It is shown that in some parameter domain, the hole-like excitations lead to the soliton's negative mass regime, arising due to the coupling between chirp momentum and Kohn mode. In low momenta region the trap considerably affects the dispersion of the grey soliton, which opens a new window to observe Lieb-mode excitations. Further, we extend our analysis to binary condensate, which yields usual shape compatible grey-bright soliton pairs. The inter-species interaction induces a shift in the Lieb-mode excitations, where the pair can form a bound state. We emphasize that the present model provides an opportunity to study such excitations in the low momenta regime, as well as the formation of bound state in binary condensate.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure
