Comparison of DCT, SVD and BFOA based multimodal biometric watermarking systems
AbstractDigital image watermarking is a major domain for hiding the biometric information, in which the watermark data are made to be concealed inside a host image imposing imperceptible change in the picture. Due to the advance in digital image watermarking, the majority of research aims to make a reliable improvement in robustness to prevent the attack. The reversible invisible watermarking scheme is used for fingerprint and iris multimodal biometric system. A novel approach is used for fusing different biometric modalities. Individual unique modalities of fingerprint and iris biometric are extracted and fused using different fusion techniques. The performance of different fusion techniques is evaluated and the Discrete Wavelet Transform fusion method is identified as the best. Then the best fused biometric template is watermarked into a cover image. The various watermarking techniques such as the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and Bacterial Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA) are implemented to the fused biometric feature image. Performance of watermarking systems is compared using different metrics. It is found that the watermarked images are found robust over different attacks and they are able to reverse the biometric template for Bacterial Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA) watermarking technique

Palmprint Recognition by using Bandlet, Ridgelet, Wavelet and Neural Network
Palmprint recognition has emerged as a substantial biometric based personal identification. Tow types of biometrics palmprint feature. high resolution feature that includes: minutia points, ridges and singular points that could be extracted for forensic applications. Moreover, low resolution feature such as wrinkles and principal lines which could be extracted for commercial applications. This paper uses 700nm spectral band PolyU hyperspectral palmprint database. Multiscale image transform: bandlet, ridgelet and 2D discrete wavelet have been applied to extract feature. The size of features are reduced by using principle component analysis and linear discriminate analysis. Feed-forward Back-propagation neural network is used as a classifier. The recognition rate accuracy shows that bandlet transform outperforms others
Watermarking techniques for genuine fingerprint authentication.
Fingerprints have been used to authenticate people remotely and allow them access to a system. However, the fingerprint-capture sensor is cracked easily using false fingerprint features constructed from a glass surface. Fake fingerprints, which can be easily obtained by attackers, could cheat the system and this issue remains a challenge in fingerprint-based authentication systems. Thus, a mechanism that can validate the originality of fingerprint samples is desired. Watermarking techniques have been used to enhance the fingerprint-based authentication process, however, none of them have been found to satisfy genuine person verification requirements. This thesis focuses on improving the verification of the genuine fingerprint owner using watermarking techniques. Four research issues are being addressed to achieve the main aim of this thesis. The first research task was to embed watermark into fingerprint images collected from different angles. In verification systems, an acquired fingerprint image is compared with another image, which was stored in the database at the time of enrolment. The displacements and rotations of fingerprint images collected from different angles lead to different sets of minutiae. In this case, the fingerprint-based authentication system operates on the ‘close enough’ matching principle between samples and template. A rejection of genuine samples can occur erroneously in such cases. The process of embedding watermarks into fingerprint samples could make this worse by adding spurious minutiae or corrupting correct minutiae. Therefore, a watermarking method for fingerprint images collected from different angles is proposed. Second, embedding high payload of watermark into fingerprint image and preserving the features of the fingerprint from being affected by the embedded watermark is challenging. In this scenario, embedding multiple watermarks that can be used with fingerprint to authenticate the person is proposed. In the developed multi-watermarks schema, two watermark images of high payloads are embedded into fingerprints without significantly affecting minutiae. Third, the robustness of the watermarking approach against image processing operations is important. The implemented fingerprint watermarking algorithms have been proposed to verify the origin of the fingerprint image; however, they are vulnerable to several modes of image operations that can affect the security level of the authentication system. The embedded watermarks, and the fingerprint features that are used subsequently for authentication purposes, can be damaged. Therefore, the current study has evaluated in detail the robustness of the proposed watermarking methods to the most common image operations. Fourth, mobile biometrics are expected to link the genuine user to a claimed identity in ubiquitous applications, which is a great challenge. Touch-based sensors for capturing fingerprints have been incorporated into mobile phones for user identity authentication. However, an individual fake fingerprint cracking the sensor on the iPhone 5S is a warning that biometrics are only a representation of a person, and are not secure. To make thing worse, the ubiquity of mobile devices leaves much room for adversaries to clone, impersonate or fabricate fake biometric identities and/or mobile devices to defraud systems. Therefore, the integration of multiple identifiers for both the capturing device and its owner into one unique entity is proposed
Advancing iris biometric technology
PhD ThesisThe iris biometric is a well-established technology which is already in use in
several nation-scale applications and it is still an active research area with several
unsolved problems. This work focuses on three key problems in iris biometrics
namely: segmentation, protection and cross-matching. Three novel
methods in each of these areas are proposed and analyzed thoroughly.
In terms of iris segmentation, a novel iris segmentation method is designed
based on a fusion of an expanding and a shrinking active contour by integrating
a new pressure force within the Gradient Vector Flow (GVF) active
contour model. In addition, a new method for closed eye detection is proposed.
The experimental results on the CASIA V4, MMU2, UBIRIS V1 and
UBIRIS V2 databases show that the proposed method achieves state-of-theart
results in terms of segmentation accuracy and recognition performance
while being computationally more efficient. In this context, improvements
by 60.5%, 42% and 48.7% are achieved in segmentation accuracy for the
CASIA V4, MMU2 and UBIRIS V1 databases, respectively. For the UBIRIS
V2 database, a superior time reduction is reported (85.7%) while maintaining
a similar accuracy. Similarly, considerable time improvements by 63.8%,
56.6% and 29.3% are achieved for the CASIA V4, MMU2 and UBIRIS V1
databases, respectively.
With respect to iris biometric protection, a novel security architecture is designed
to protect the integrity of iris images and templates using watermarking
and Visual Cryptography (VC). Firstly, for protecting the iris image, text
which carries personal information is embedded in the middle band frequency
region of the iris image using a novel watermarking algorithm that randomly
interchanges multiple middle band pairs of the Discrete Cosine Transform
(DCT). Secondly, for iris template protection, VC is utilized to protect the
iii
iris template. In addition, the integrity of the stored template in the biometric
smart card is guaranteed by using the hash signatures. The proposed method
has a minimal effect on the iris recognition performance of only 3.6% and
4.9% for the CASIA V4 and UBIRIS V1 databases, respectively. In addition,
the VC scheme is designed to be readily applied to protect any biometric binary
template without any degradation to the recognition performance with a
complexity of only O(N).
As for cross-spectral matching, a framework is designed which is capable of
matching iris images in different lighting conditions. The first method is designed
to work with registered iris images where the key idea is to synthesize
the corresponding Near Infra-Red (NIR) images from the Visible Light (VL)
images using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) while the second method
is capable of working with unregistered iris images based on integrating the
Gabor filter with different photometric normalization models and descriptors
along with decision level fusion to achieve the cross-spectral matching. A
significant improvement by 79.3% in cross-spectral matching performance is
attained for the UTIRIS database. As for the PolyU database, the proposed
verification method achieved an improvement by 83.9% in terms of NIR vs
Red channel matching which confirms the efficiency of the proposed method.
In summary, the most important open issues in exploiting the iris biometric
are presented and novel methods to address these problems are proposed.
Hence, this work will help to establish a more robust iris recognition system
due to the development of an accurate segmentation method working for iris
images taken under both the VL and NIR. In addition, the proposed protection
scheme paves the way for a secure iris images and templates storage.
Moreover, the proposed framework for cross-spectral matching will help to
employ the iris biometric in several security applications such as surveillance
at-a-distance and automated watch-list identification.Ministry of Higher Education and

Recent Advances in Signal Processing
The signal processing task is a very critical issue in the majority of new technological inventions and challenges in a variety of applications in both science and engineering fields. Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closed-form tractability over real-world accuracy. These constraints were imposed by the lack of powerful computing tools. During the last few decades, signal processing theories, developments, and applications have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This book is targeted primarily toward both students and researchers who want to be exposed to a wide variety of signal processing techniques and algorithms. It includes 27 chapters that can be categorized into five different areas depending on the application at hand. These five categories are ordered to address image processing, speech processing, communication systems, time-series analysis, and educational packages respectively. The book has the advantage of providing a collection of applications that are completely independent and self-contained; thus, the interested reader can choose any chapter and skip to another without losing continuity
