Homelessness Counts: Changes in Homelessness from 2005 to 2007
In 2007, the National Alliance to End Homelessness released Homelessness Counts, establishing a 2005 baseline for measuring progress in the fight to end homelessness. This report is a follow up to that report. Here, we analyze the changes from 2005 to 2007, looking more closely at changes at the state level and among subpopulations
Working Together Toward Better Health Outcomes
Healthcare organizations and community-based organizations (CBOs) that provide human services are partnering in shared pursuit of better health outcomes. The Partnership for Healthy Outcomes – Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF), the Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS), and the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities (Alliance), with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) – set out to capture and analyze the lessons emerging in this dynamic space. Information from more than 200 partnerships serving all 50 US states provide important lessons from, and for, partnerships that hope to improve access to care, address health inequities, and make progress on social issues like food, education, and housing
The European Union and the United States, before the election: a much deeper mutual understanding. Jean Monnet/Robert Schuman Paper Series Vol. 12 Special, October 2012
From the Introduction. Governor Romney’s statement that President Obama was trying to convert the United
States into a European state actually served to point out the need for a much deeper
understanding of both entities to make considerable progress in the future. The need for
a close alliance is taken for granted. However, the link is riddled with confusion and
stereotypes. This relationship is considered a normal fact forged by mutual historical
legacies. Hence the frequent signs of awkward behaviour and misunderstandings under
the cover of the notion that potential damage will be corrected by the force of the special
relationship. If conflicts are detected, both parties are said to be condemned to agree. If
a lack of knowledge is detected, it will be modified by accessible means. Mechanisms
for an understanding and cooperation are within reach. Therefore, an effective
relationship is not utopian. However, there are areas in which much work is needed to
strengthen the alliance and correct its shortcomings. There is a need, not only for
agreements in economic and political issues, but also for a deeper understanding of the
essence of both entities
The Global Media and Information Literacy Week: Moving Towards MIL Cities
The Global Media and Information Literacy Week commemorates the progress in achieving “MIL for all” by aggregating various MIL-related local and international events and actions across different disciplines around the world. The MIL Global Week 2018, 24 to 31 October, was marked by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in collaboration with various organizations including the UN Alliance of Civilizations, the Global Alliance for Partnership on MIL, the International Federation of Library Associations, the International Association of School Libraries, and the UNESCO-UNAOC University Cooperation Programme on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue
Recent Advances in Scaling Up Gaussian Process Predictive Models for Large Spatiotemporal Data
The expressive power of Gaussian process (GP) models comes at a cost of poor scalability in the size of the data. To improve their scalability, this paper presents an overview of our recent progress in scaling up GP models for large spatiotemporally correlated data through parallelization on clusters of machines, online learning, and nonmyopic active sensing/learning.Singapore-MIT Alliance (Subaward Agreement No. 41)Singapore-MIT Alliance (Subaward Agreement No. 52
WormBase: A modern Model Organism Information Resource
WormBase (https://wormbase.org/) is a mature Model Organism Information Resource supporting researchers using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system for studies across a broad range of basic biological processes. Toward this mission, WormBase efforts are arranged in three primary facets: curation, user interface and architecture. In this update, we describe progress in each of these three areas. In particular, we discuss the status of literature curation and recently added data, detail new features of the web interface and options for users wishing to conduct data mining workflows, and discuss our efforts to build a robust and scalable architecture by leveraging commercial cloud offerings. We conclude with a description of WormBase\u27s role as a founding member of the nascent Alliance of Genome Resources
Latin American "free-trade unionism" and the cold War: an analysis based on educational policies
The political education of workers and their leaders was viewed as a strategic concern in the cold war period’s bipolar world. This article discusses how this issue was dealt with by Latin American reformist trade unions grouped together in the Inter-American Regional Organization of Workers (ORIT, for its Spanish acronym), analyzing the educational policies promoted by its Inter-American Institute for Labor Studies (IIES), focusing specifically on its educational program for trade union instructors. We argue that the nature of the education provided changed, shifting from a rationale based on explicit ideological confrontation to a more focalized technical type of training. We claim that this shift started in the early 1960s, when the Alliance for Progress was launched.Fil: Scodeller, Gabriela Noemi. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Amplifier for Optical Stochastic Cooling
The amplification of electromagnetic radiation emitted from charged-particlebeams can be used for beam cooling. We discuss our progress to develop such a system usingundulator radiation.Work supported by the by the US Department of Energy (DOE) contract DE-SC0013761 to Northern Illinois University. External Program Evaluation: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Program in Ethiopia
USAID/Ethiopia commissioned this study to evaluate an ongoing Millennium Water Alliance (MWA) program and to generate findings that could assist in developing monitoring and evaluation indicators for future use. As of 2008, MWA was implementing eight WASH projects in 28 districts, with stated goals of improving access to sustainable and adequate water, improving access to sanitation services, increasing community awareness, and promoting safe hygiene practices. The evaluation calls MWA's progress encouraging overall, but notes that the one to two year planning horizons used were not enough to cause internalized behavior change. Furthermore, the authors recommend investing more in research and development; adopting harmonized approaches and best practices as well as innovative methodologies; building capacity of district water, health, and education offices; and linking the MWA program with other government, USAID, WSP and UNICEF programs
